Can I tell you if it came out before FMA? No... but my opinion is much higher of this manga than that series...

Full Metal Panic! is a mecha manga where there's a secret organization whose funding seems limitless (lol) and whose obligation it is to keep top secret military information (and seemingly much more knowledge than that) out of the hands of terrorist organizations.

This top secret information is stored inside the heads of other people... those people are referred to as "Whispereds". The military organization is obligated to keep this information unkown to the public at all costs...

Kaname Chidori is a HS girl in the mnaga who is one of these "Whispereds" and Sergeant Sagara of the secret organization is charged with the undercover duty of keeping her safe.

It's got romance involved but it's not focused too greatly around that plotline. It is a good comedy and the action is intense at the times it occurs. For a mecha series there's not incredibly a lot of focus on the machines themselves... and the series mostly revolves around the day to day life of the two characters mentioned above.

hehe .. I have seen the anime (fumoffu is the best) .. so not really into manga ...
Sagara is the biggest army freak I ever seen in anime lol

I saw the anime as well... but it follows different plotlines from the manga so if you really like the story I suggest you pop into Borders or Barnes and Noble and browse one of the volumes 3nodding

Sagara is so aweomse... he's like a Military 1337ist xd

I loved the anime series, I have all 3 somewhere. I have to say I have never read the Manga, I figured it would be about the same as the anime (the anime itself was VERY well done). But now that I hear the plotlines are different, I do believe I will start collecting...

For me it's the other way around... I love reading when I get the chance... and just as an example I believe that the LOTR movies that came out were nothing but "based" on the novels.

Damn hollywood producers put too much of their own perspectives into movies when they base them on books... Tolkien was a genious and the movies degrade the story.

Full Metal Panic! is one of the best anime's I've ever seen! I'll admit that so far, the Fumoffu series is funnier and easier to watch in my own opinion, but I still like the regular series... And I've read some of the mangas! I like the newer ones, though they look really chibi-ish. 3nodding
