Biff opens up his fridge, it’s empty. Scarlet sits at the kitchen table looking at her wrist.
Scarlet: Dolly cleaned it out before she left…
Biff: Dolly?
Scarlet: There’s a lot going on that’s happened…
Biff: Enough to hurt yourself, Scarlet?
Scarlet: Life is hell without you…
Scarlet closes her eyes trying not to cry. Biff puts his hand on Scarlet’s shoulder.
Biff: I won’t ever leave you again…
Scarlet hugs Biff.
Scarlet: I’ve missed you so much!
The rain lightly falls outside the apartment, Scarlet hugs her knees as she sits on the couch. Biff sits next to her.
Scarlet: I’m afraid to tell you… but I will… it’s Max…
Biff: Max?
Scarlet: He’s in the hospital…
Biff: Hospital?
Scarlet: He’s was admitted soon after you left… it was a hate crime…
Biff: Max… I failed you…
Biff puts his hand to his face, tears are forming in his eyes. Scarlet hugs Biff and he hugs back. Later, Biff is driving and Scarlet sits in the passenger seat.
Scarlet: It’s been tough… Dad stays at the hospital so Mom runs the bar with Alice. That’s why we went back to the magic shop and me and Oliver drank those aging potions… Oh, and Oliver got put in Juvie for setting his all-boy school on fire.
Biff: Oh my god…
Scarlet: And I ******** up…
Biff: Hm?
Scarlet: I fell for the girl whose parents don’t believe in same-sex… and she… will always lie to me…
Biff: You’re just like her…
Scarlet: What?
Biff: The Goddess, but this time I’ll be here for you. All of you.
Ivan is outside the hospital smoking and talking on his cell phone.
Ivan: Why didn’t you call me last night? You didn’t know she was gone? Uh, all right Chris; I’ll find her.
Ivan hangs up his phone and tosses his cigarette. He gets on his motorcycle and leaves. Biff parks his car in the hospital’s parking lot, Scarlet points to the motorcycle passing by.
Scarlet: There goes Dad… looking for me.
Biff: Well, weren’t here to see him so you don’t have to worry.
Scarlet: Good.
Biff and Scarlet enter the hospital and go into the elevator. Scarlet stares at the buttons; Biff eyes her.
Biff: Don’t you dare.
Scarlet: Awww!
Biff: Just like Max.
The elevator stops and opens up, they walk out. Scarlet points to some snack machines.
Scarlet: Got any change? We never ate breakfast.
Biff: I got some.
Biff pulls out a few coins from his pocket, Scarlet snatches it and skips to the machine. Biff shakes his head and follows her.
Biff: Get F-5, I like peanuts.
Scarlet: Peanuts! I want some peanut butter!
A doctor walks behind and Biff and puts his hand on Biff’s shoulder.
Dr. Daichi: Dolly, you’re back?
Biff: Huh?
Biff turns around and gets a sweat drop.
Biff: Dolly?
Dr. Daichi: Oh! You’re not Dolly Foxer!
Biff: Yeah, I’m her brother – Biff Foxer.
Scarlet turns around munching on candy.
Scarlet: That’s Dr. Daichi, Max’s doctor.
Dr. Daichi: Scarlet! You mother is worried sick about you.
Scarlet: I bet she is but we need to see my uncle.
Dr. Daichi: Not until you call your mom.
Scarlet: Ugh, fine! Hey Biff –
Biff: I’ll surprise her myself Scarlet.
Scarlet: Okay.
Scarlet skips off to the desk, Dr. Daichi leads Biff to Max’s room.
Dr. Daichi: She’s been troubling her parents for the longest time… she was well behaved with your sister though. Ah, Dolly certainly cheered this hospital up.
Biff: That’s Dolly… I just need to know… what happened to Max?
Dr. Daichi: I remember Dolly bringing him in…
Flashing back, the rain poured outside the hospital. Dolly carried Max on her back, both drenched. Dr. Daichi walked out the hospital when he spotted Dolly.
Dr. Daichi: Ma’am!
Dolly: Help…
Dolly falls forward and Dr. Daichi catches her.
Dr. Daichi: She’s burning up.
Dolly wakes up in a hospital bed, she sneezes. Dr. Daichi walks in.
Dr. Daichi: Ah, you’re up.
Dolly: What happened?
Dr. Daichi: You were carrying a young fellow and passed out from your fever.
Dolly: Is he okay?
Dr. Daichi: I’m afraid he’s suffered a severe assault to his head… We’ve operated but he’s in a coma.
Dolly starts to cry; Dr. Daichi’s flashback ends and opens the door to Max’s room.
Dr. Daichi: I thought it might have been her boyfriend.
Biff: He’s not, he’s mine.
Dr. Daichi: Oh… I’ll leave you alone.
Biff walks into the room as Dr. Daichi closes the door. Max lies in a hospital bed hooked up to machines. Biff looks at Max, tears form in his eyes.
Biff: Max…
Biff leans over and kisses Max’s lips. Max’s nose twitches.
Biff: Hm?
Scarlet walks into the room frustrated.
Scarlet: She worries too much now! Gosh, I can’t believe she’s getting Dad to take me home.
Biff: Scarlet, has Max showed any… reactions to anything?
Scarlet: As far as I know, nope. If you don’t want to see my Dad it be best to leave. Hopefully I can sneak out tonight.
Biff: Don’t do that, I think I’ll go see your mom and Alice.
Scarlet: Oh, okay…
Scarlet hugs Biff.
Scarlet: Then count on me to be at your place tonight.
Biff: I will, see you.
Ivan takes off his helmet in the hospital’s parking lot, he sighs. In the hospital, Ivan walks into Max’s room. Scarlet yawns.
Ivan: Sick?
Scarlet: I’m fine Dad; I just needed to get out.
Ivan: Not when it rains like that, you could have caught ammonia.
Scarlet: I’m not sick Dad…
Biff walks into Flaming Snowball smoking a cigarette; he sits down at the bar and puts the cigarette out in an ashtray. Chris comes out of the back yawning.
Chris: Can I help you?
Biff: Vodka Miss.
Chris: Hm?
Chris looks up and sees Biff.
Chris: Biff!
Chris reaches over the bar top to hug Biff. She squeezes him.
Chris: You’re really here!
Biff: Chris, you’re choking me.
Chris: Oops!
In the lounge, Chris sits down next to Biff on the couch. Biff takes a sip out of his glass.
Biff: This place hasn’t changed much…
Chris: The bar hasn’t… but we all have…
Biff: I know... I saw Scarlet last night when I got into town. She was crying on a bench in the rain so I took her back to my apartment.
Chris: Thank-god, I didn’t know where she was last night.
Biff: You all are going through a hard time…
Chris: She told you about… Max?
Biff: I saw him… did they ever catch who did it?
Chris: The man who did it was killed, by your sister.
Biff: By Dolly?
Chris: She lunged at his throat, the other two men ran but Ivan made sure that they were caught.
Biff: And he’s been at the hospital the entire time?
Chris: Yeah… and Scarlet runs away all the time so it’s pretty lonely…
Biff: I can imagine. She also told me that Oliver is in Juvie.
Chris: Yeah… Alice drinks all the time to get over him and Saikoro…
Biff: Saikoro?
Chris: Yeah, she liked Saikoro… she tried to hide it but now she’s just a wreck.
Biff: And you?
Chris: Just tired...
Biff: You all are under a lot of stress; guess it’s time I come to fix it.
Chris: By yourself?
Biff: I’m Biff Foxer, I can do anything.
