Well I hope the title says it all, but I better give some more information.
As you probably know, when an American company sees a fairly decent anime out in Japan, they will buy the rights to it and broadcast it in America and parts of Europe. Now we all know that a lot of anime dubs are bad, but doesn't bother me, oh no, what bothers me is when they actually edit the animation >_<
I guess a good example would be when One Piece came onto America TV. They pretty edited the whole thing; 4 of them are the ones I noticed the most.
1) A character called Senji is a smoker. He needs to smoke in order to keep his power, so sometimes he will have five or six cigarettes in his mouth. But no, they edited so he has a smoking lolli pop. They kept the smoke in, but edited it so it looked like a lolly pop and not a cigarette confused
2) A lot of anime have guns, or gun scenes. In Once Piece they edited so it was some sort of hammer or a pop-gun.
3) Drugs were cookies or candy. Enough said.
4) Most of the African-American type characters where recolor as 'white' people.
I don't understand why they would do it? Most anime is quiet mature or on a little late, so why do you put on a late night or 15+ show to 12 year olds at 11am? I'm not saying there's nothing wrong with showing good decent anime on Western TV, just why must you edit a lot of it to make it suitable for children when some of the anime they buy the rights are teen or late night animes? gonk
So discuss:
- Edited anime
- Do you think its okay for Western cartoon companies to edit them, even if it won't make sense?
- Your opinion on why you think they edit anime
- I'm I being too picky about it?

well, that just shows what type of country america is.
they think they need to protect the young from the harmful, when in fact, it's like they forget what really goes on. if you tend to try to protect the young, they grow up, thinking the complete opposite of what something really seems, because with the shows on cartoon network now, it seems like they edited one piece for the younger audiences, which, is ok, i think is fine, they want younger audiences to experience the japenese ways of animation and such things, however, i think they shouldn't edit anything because like you said, it made the anime look much more retarded. 3nodding

The first editing I noticed was back the Dragon Ball days. I was always wondering why goku's shorts seemed to be errrr, how to put this, glowing? Different? I dunno, same with Bulma's sheets and other objects. Then i noticed the insane amount of already stated editing in one piece. I was like what?! Why is he calling it juice? He's clearly holding whine in a whine glass with a whine bottle. I also noticed that in most manga there is editing as well. Even when it says its not. In Hakuro no go (sp?) one of the characters put his "gum" out on the game board. When he was "chewing" his gum I noticed that a few frames, instead of it saying "Chew, chew, chew..." there was this strange cloud of smoke? Hmmmm... Overall it is slightly annoying, but you pretty much can tell what really is supposed to be happening. If it bothers you too much, simply buy the unedited translated versions. That's if you don't really mind sub titles.

Back to the quoted topic: We have the origonal texts (because it's the "British" way *sighs* ), but we have a Glossery of the olde english at the back of the book. Although, it wouldn't surprise if they put it in modern English soon...

So yeah, Communism is a good idea, but not in practice wink I'd say he's more of the extream right-wing But yes, I agree with about Bush. He just wants to follow his dad’s footsteps, and wants oil. It didn't help that he claimed that his war in Iraq was his "Crusade", which is pretty much a Christian term, so he's basically saying is a war between religions. If you don't like Bush, I suggest watching Dead Ringers and 2DTV. Satire at it's best xd

Satire at it's best xd is it good? on the same note, there was a senate election this past week, and Bush went down to Florida to show his support for a republican, and the man who was running didn't even show up, because he said with Bush there, all it's going to do is hurt his chances of becoming senator. xd

Who really cares if some one is smoking or shooting or anything like that, if kids dont see it in cartoons they're still going to see it somewhere else, ya know?
A good example comes to mind in Sailor Moon. All the lesbians and trannies and incest that went on in that anime was crazy. But somehow, they pulled it off really well.
A pretty bad job of editing is in Dragon Ball though, I remember seeing an episode where baby Goku was supposed to nekkid, but they decided to edit in their own undies, than hovered around poor little nekkid baby Goku's private parts, instead of staying in place. Horrible. Gokuuu~ i didn't know there was trannys in sailor moon. xd i guess i never saw the original version.

Horrible. Haha! That reminded me of one of the many DBZ episodes I saw where Vegeta is dead or somewhere else in the "Freezer Saga" and Goku has a vision of Vegeta talking to him. In the origonal, Vegeta is nakied, but the one I was he had a VERY bad edited pair of trousers. It was just basically two blue blobs to cover his legs. I patically fell off the chair laughing. And I didn't know about that in Sailor Moon, but I've only watched the dubs, so probably that's why, and plus it never really grabbed my attention wink
