Lightning crashed over the seas of Cephei, the waves crashing over the Port defences threatening to reach the ships that swayed gently within the concrete walls.
In the darkness the inhabitants of the city slept on. Those woken by the thunder seeking refuge deep under their covers, in the safe warmth.
Mecca, not one to be bothered by such weather slept soundly, one arm wrapped around Covet as he dreamed of, well whatever dark things he dreamt of.
Scimitar cowered under the bed. Trying not to whimper too loudly as each flash of lightening lit the room and clap of thunder shook the glass of the windows.

Covet swallowed hard at the loud crash of thunder that shook their small home. Hearing Scimitar, she eased away from Mecca's warmth and protection to the edge of the bed. Sliding out, she knelt down on the cold floor and reached out for him, pulling him into her arms. Slipping back under the warm covers, she jumped and bit back a yelp of surprise as there was a bright flash of lightening followed immediately by a loud crash. Pressing herself as close as physically possible to Mecca, she held Scim close and scratched him soothingly behind his ears beneath the blankets.

Mecca opened his eyes as he felt the cool air rush over his skin. Smiling he watched Covet rescue the dog from his hiding place and welcomed her back into her former position as the lightening flashed once more and the thunder made her jump. "It cannot hurt you." He said rubbing her back and looking from her eyes to Scimitar who seemed a lot less scared now he was alowed to hide with them.

Covet looked up from Scim and smiled lightly at Mecca's words, feeling immensely comforted by the way Mecca held her and rubbed her back. "I know. But it's still scary," she replied softly, shifting a little so that Scim was lying on her stomach and she was able to press herself even closer to him. "Sorry. I did not mean to wake you. Go back to sleep," she said, resting her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes tightly as another loud clap shook the windows again.

Mecca smiled and stoked Scim's head, shifting, he wrapped his arm around Covet again and closed his eyes. Once more ignoring the sounds of thunder as he started to fall asleep.
Just as he was about to drift off there was a loud, desperate knocking at the door.
Mecca frowned and looked at Covet, slipping out of bed and grabbing a robe from the door. Who on earth would have walked the cliff path in such weather. He prepared him self to attack incase it was a less desirable visitor and opened the door.
The creature fell to the cold floor, a poor excuse for a Shu, bloodied and disheveled. "Mecca." It croaked as the wind whirled into the house and shook the doors. "Help me."

Covet jumped at the sound of knocking on their door and sat up as Mecca pulled away. Watching him with worry on her brow, she hugged Scim tightly as Mecca slipped out of the bedroom. Taking a deep breath, she quickly released Scim and hurried over to the door, grabbing a robe and slipping it on as she started down the stairs, pausing halfway down as Mecca opened the door. The wind that tore into the house and tugged mercilessly at her robe and nightgown went completely unnoticed as the destroyed shu collapsed onto their floor. Rushing forward she quickly dropped down beside him.
"Who is he Mecca?" she asked, wiping blood and rain off his face with the sleeve of her robe and looking over his dishevled state.

Mecca fought desperatly with the door to close it, fastening the latch and falling to his knees beside his old friend. "A friend." He said looking him over and frowning. "From Sagrees, a long time ago." He said looking up at her. "His name is Marx"
Sighing he attempted to pick the dead weight up and put him over his shoulder in a fireman's carry. "Get your mandolin, he's going to need some expert healing. I'll start a fire in the spare room and get him dry and warm."

Covet blinked in complete surprise when Mecca called him friend. In his terms she wasn't entirely sure what that meant, but obviously if he trusted him, then he was more than okay with her. She watched him pick Marx up and rose to her feet as well. Nodding at his instruction, she turned and went to start a fire in the kitchen hearth so that they could make tea. Slipping back up the stairs, she grabbed her mandolin from the chest at the foot of their bed, the returned to the spare bedroom.

Mecca got Marx out of the wet clothes, dryed him off and pulled the covers up high. As Covet appeared he smiled a little and went to stoke the fire. "It looks like he has been in some kind of fight." He said smoothing his friend's damp hair off his face. "Magical I would imagine, there are few cuts other than this one on his head."

Covet stepped up to the bed and looked down at Marx. Chewing lightly on her lower lip, she set her mandolin down and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Make some of your tea and get the first aid so that we can clean this cut properly for him. My healing is more for the inner strength," she said softly, looking up at Mecca. Looking back down at Marx, she reached out and put her hands on his forehead, careful of the cut there. Singing softly, she reached out with her power to feel how close to death he was. Frowning slightly, she opened her eyes and pulled her hands away, reaching for her mandolin. He was really far gone. Immediately playing the opening chords to her healing song, she kept her green eyes trained on Marx as she began to sing and feel her magic flow from her music to wash over and through him.

Mecca nodded and went to the kitchen to retrieve an iron kettle and some bandages. Returning he smiled at the sound of Covet's singing and pulled a chair up to the bed. Taking strenth from her song to his fingers as he cleaned and bandaged the cut, gently smoothing his friend's hair back as he felt his head.
The fever seemed to be reducing, his hearbeat slowing to something more normal. Slowly, after a while his ice blue eyes began to open and he sat bolt upright. Staring at Covet with fear in his eyes. "Who are you?" He cried, shrining back from her.

Covet didn't even flinch when Marx bolted upright. She could feel his inner strength returning and knew he would wake soon. Simply ending her song, she reached out and placed her mandolin down against the nightstand.
"Covet," she smiled softly, placing a hand on her chest. "Do not worry Marx. Mecca is right here," she smiled and turned her eyes towards Mecca. Rising to her feet, she held her hands out to him. "Please, may I see how you are doing?" she asked, keeping her green eyes on his. She was tired, but she wanted to be sure that he would not suffer at all through the night.

Mecc jumped a little as Marx sat upright and stood to place a hand on his shoulder. "I'm here." he said looking to Covet and giving her a slight smile. "Covet is my companion. Partner in crime if you will."
Marx looked from Mecca to Covet and swallowed. His head was pounding and his body ached all over. He smiled at Covet and nodded. Anyone Mecca trusted he knew he could do too. The red Shu did not place his belief in someone lightly. "You are a talented healer." He said to Covet, lying back down so that she could look over him.

"I get a lot of practice," she smirked wryly, giving Mecca a look. Leaning down, she placed a hand on Marx's forehead. His fever was nearly gone. Mecca's tea would take care of that, she thought. Smiling, she gently smoothed his damp hair back and crossed the room to grab the kettle so she could pour him a mug of tea.
"Drink this," she said, returning to his side and sitting on the edge of the bed. "It will help you sleep and you will feel much better in the morning," she smiled warmly, offering the mug to him.

Marx smiled and took the tea. "Thank you." he said softly. "Both of you. I am sorry to disturb you so late, but I had to find Mecca. As soon as it happened I knew he would know what to do."
Mecca watched him with a frowna nd folded his arms. What happened? he thought as he continued to watch carefully. "Well, enough for tonight." He said with a nod. "You need to rest. Any matters may be discussed in the morning."
