Okay, besides obvious ones like the flower turning into a christmas tree & then burning up, what are some examples of symbolism in this film?

I think one is how Sally's limbs tend to fall off and are reattached throughout the movie, I suppose representing how she is sensitive and timid, but at the same time determined (for lack of a better word).

I'm sure there are others, but I'm not paying attention very closely.

Please share any and all thoughts on the subject.

Sally's vision is an obvious symbol for Jack's Christmas disaster.

Already mentioned that in the first post. Got any more examples?

Um... Yeah, most of the symbolism is really freaken' obvious. I mean, you don't need to even think to realize the flower/tree thing.
Also, you spelled 'symbolism' incorrectly in the title. sweatdrop

Ack. I must not have been awake. ><

Lock, Shock, and Barrel's masks. Notice they only wore them when they acted their most innocent, but when they were taken off, they acted more like their devilish little selves (the only exception, of course, being at the end of the movie when they helped the Mayor rescue Jack and Sally). The symbolism? We all wear masks, we all have things to hide, we all have ways to decieve.

Nice one. I always thought they wore them to hide their facial expressions so they were harder to read. That's a pretty smart observation, I never would have thought of that. whee

Wow, nice observation. I think I'll watch it again and try to find tiny things like that...once my VCR stops spontaneously combusting...

There's alot of 'forever' in Nightmare. It seems like it's a motif to me.
Lock, Shock and Barrel say 'now and forever' in their song, and so do Jack and Sally. Things don't change in Halloween, but then Jack kind of makes a disruption in the flow. Also, I think things don't age in Halloween. But I have this theory that after Jack kills Oogie, Lock, Shock and Barrel would start growing up because he was the one who enchanted them to stay young. Just a theory. So yeah... Change as a motif...

That's all I have to say. xd

I never thought of that...I think part of the whole moral of the story is that change can be exciting but it can also corrupt...and also that some things are eternal and can never be changed (for example, love, death, etc).

I noticed the forever bit a while ago (just that it was mentioned in more than one song), but I never really noticed it as a theme. ^^

As far as Lock, Shock, and Barrel growing up---have you played Oogie's Revenge? They were still children after a year.

Yeah, but I don't really consider it part of the universe. ^^;
I mean, it is I suppose, but... I don't know. whee
