I'm starting this thread up to post any intersting or fun tricks you like to use with the Foil. Just so we can have a little edge over our friends

I'm 6'2", and have long arms and legs, so if I don't keep the other person as far away from me as I can, I won't be able to hit them. To try and mask my length, I bring my heels closer together and lean back a bit, which makes it seem as though I'm about a step further away than I actually am.

Something our coach got of one of the French athletes is to extend your arm so the tip's almost touching the ground. When they lunge at you, bring your arm up. Since you extended first, it's your right of way and you win every time.

Any others?

I always find it depends who your with, but after a while I can normally judge how far the person can lunge, and then I can make them lunge at me when I'm just to far away, I can usually get an easy repost. I also like the dummy making the opponent thinking ur going to attack then halting, before making the real attack, although this causes a broken attack confused .

i find alot of people will always atempt to parry whenever you beat attack and bang your front foot pretending to attack. as soon as you think they will do the parry, you disengage and then, voila a nice easy target to lunge at. works almost all the time if the disengage works. sometimes fails if it is a weak parry or ofcourse if they guess your move because they can bring their arm back for a second parry.

and there is one guy at my club who is so easy to beat because whenever you get him in a corner he always fleches. but to fleche he moves backwards loads and slightly to the side, so as soon as he stops moving back i just extend my arm because hes about to charge. i aim straight at his chest, we both get hit, i extended first. i tell him to stop making the fleches obvious but he wont listen.

When it comes to in-fighting, i've found a bind in Seconde, if executed successfully, should almost always force your opponent to retreat, if it does not yield a touche for you.

And if you are fencing an opponent who keeps on taking line, or, in the case of epee, continually holds you at bay with an extention towards your head, a bind into any pronated parry will often have pleasing results. A passa sotto (an action that passes under the opponent's blade) in Septime, Octave, Seconde, or Quarte may also have a positive effect.

I hate to break it to you, but that only applies with really old school refs, the new FIE rules don't explicitly define arm extension as the point at which an attack begins. It's now a combination of both extension and footwork, since this is a reactionary move and not the initiation of an attack I guarauntee you that 9/10 Refs will call it a counter attack...

You are reacting, not initiating, therefore it is not an attack. So unless your opponent has awful form and steps in without any arm motion at all, you will never get this called as an attack on preparation in your favour...

Attack on Prep, evasion counter attacks, second intention counter offense is my Game... I eat people alive with it
