I am a cosplay n00b, somebody who fully intends to cosplay, really would like to cosplay, and is starting making plans for her cosplay, and waiting until christmas, when she hopes to get the money she needs to cosplay.

I was wondering if anyone here has any advice for the n00b, any bits of wisdom you've gathered over the years, anything you wish somebody had told you before you started cosplaying, anything you tell everyone who says " domokun i want to do that!"

Also, tales of your first cosplay could be entertaining, as well as informative. What costumes did you guys start with? what went horridly wrong, and what went right?

What do you want to know, for serious?

Can we maybe shorten the list of tips a little? Or perhaps, like, give us some ideas of characters you would like to cosplay, or pictures of yourself? Either thing would be extremely helpful.

Well, at the moment i'm so new to this that anything and everything would be helpful... At the moment i'm only planning 2 outfits... one, a whitemage. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Also, i'm making one for my girlfriend, a black mage.

I'm also wanting to make my dream avvie:

Or mayhaps just

Depending on what i see patterns for. If i can't find something for the first shirt, then i'll just do the second one, as it should be easier.

Best tip I can give randomly, that would involve ANY cosplay is. If something screws up, take a step back, breath, and give ur self a break, cuz (at least with me) working on something once ur mad cuz it screwed only makes things get worse. First cosplay was Sailor Jupiter when i was 16, no MAJOR issues with that one cuz i found patterns to mod.

well on the avi things they don't look too hard to make and rememeber that the thrift store is your best friend and that you don't have to make everything from a pattern. at least that is what i believe.

i agree with the thrift store thing. I always try to find clothing to modify rather than to make everything from scratch. ALWAYS use a pattern if you do though . . . don't try and just make things out of thin air . . . I did that recently . . . not a good idea.

and if you start to get mad with the costume and what's going on with it, go do something else for a bit and come back to it. I found that one out the hard way after sewing the same piece on wrong about 4 times in a row.
