The R2 series is one of the greatest successes in the astromech field. The original marketing slogan was "There is nothing that this little guy can't do!" Originally released in the time before the Clone Wars, the R2 series rapidly caught on as a capable starship repair droid. Later, it was adapted for starfighter duties, allowing great increases in starfighter performance. Still as popular as ever, the R2 series has been modified and upgraded several times and still can compete with the newer astromech models.

The R3 design was the first astromech produced specifically for one group, the Empire. It was the first astromech to be released after the R2 series. In the gap between the launches of the R2 and R3, droid manufacturers continued updating and developing new technologies. They added these into their popular R2 series, but the Empire wanted a droid all to its own. The R3 was the answer, as it was programmed with several naval tactics, adding to the crews' ability to command. It also was a capable repair droid servicing the massive Star Destroyers that the Empire so relied upon. Unlike the R2, this little droid comes armed with a scout blaster, allowing it to help defend against enemy boarding operations and even useful in the disciplining of officers.

While the R3 was developed specifically for the Empire, there were those who wanted a simple little droid to help around the service hangar or help on the family YT-1300 transport, not fit into combat starfighters. The R4 was specifically designed with the average consumer in mind. The R4 was stripped of all but the most basic of tools and programming, allowing the user to program in what he or she wanted. In most cases, however, the R4 was a serious step back from the wonderful R2, and users often found the R4's extremely annoying. The R4 was really the first astromech flop. As a result, many R4's have been extensively modified by their owners.

The R5 was designed specifically for the Rebel Alliance starfighters. Although the R2 was capable enough for most pilots, Alliance Brass decided it was time to take advantage of everything the astromech can do to a starfighter. The R5 was a huge success for the Alliance, and many pilots bought their droids directly from the Alliance.
