It just crossed my mind the other day how the relationships of Roy and Riza and Hamlet and Ophelia (from the Shakespearian play Hamlet, for those of you who don't know) are startlingly similar in some ways. My reasoning:

**possible spoiler alert**

1)Ophelia cannot think for herself and depends solely on the support of others for her sanity. Now, we can agree that Hawkeye isn't nearly as spineless and that she is perfectly capable of thinking for herself, but nevertheless, we've seen what she's like when she thinks that Roy's gone (volume 10 of the manga, or the 50th episode). She snaps!

2)Roy's apparent stifling of his feelings towards Hawkeye, and his occasional verbal assault. It's been hinted that his feelings for Riza run deeper than that of an officer and his personal assistant, but yet he makes no further attempt to show his feelings. Also, after he is put in the hospital after saving her life (volume 10, once again), he calls her an idiot and pretty much tells her that she's worthless.

3)Although there has been no direct imply that Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye are an item, it would be fairly inappropriate considering that he is an officer and she is his assistant. Hell, it'd be inappropriate considering they're both serving in the military. This being the case, they would probably be punished if they did have a relationship outside of the military. Likewise, Hamlet and Ophelia have a similarly inappropriate relationship, seeing that she is of lower social rank than Hamlet, a prince and future heir to the throne of Denmark.

All this aside, I don't think that Hawkeye will jump off a bridge and drown herself in a brook, but think about it. Do you think that Hiromu Arakawa had this in mind when she created the manga? Discuss, sil-vous-plait.

i dont believe there anything similar. Riza wouldn't go insane if ROy died, she would be sad and shocked but not completely insane. Shes way to strong of a person and she orders Roy more then Roy orders her. In the hospital he does not calle here wothless or impies anything close. H emore tells her that she can't completyely freak out and give up so easily. And then afterwards tells her he still trusts her with his life. There really isn't any connection between the two except that Hamlet and ROy are both guys and Riza and Ophelia are girls. i played ophelia in the community theater for 2 years. Really they're nothing alike.

I agree, I don't really know the story of Hamlet, but it doesn't seem like it's much alike. You're more so just hinking that you probably just saw or hread, or heard about something about Hamlet resently and started thinging about Roy and Riza, just because you could. I do that sometimes, but I don't jump to the conclusion that Hiromu Arakawa was thinking about it when chapters were written.

I wouldn't call it jumping to conclusions, because I didn't say in any way that I thought that Hiromu Arakawa was thinking of Hamlet when she wrote the manga. Somehow I seriously doubt it. I was just making a comparison, and I didn't mean to piss anyone off. neutral And there are a few similarities, actually, that I've pointed out that do make sense.
