Hi. I've been on this site for 2+ years, so I'm pretty proficient in what you need to know. Here is a list of a few things every Gaian needs to know to survive in the world of pixelated madness that is Gaia....

For these examples, people who have been on the site long enough to know these things will be called Gaians, and those of you who are new will be called, of course, newbs.

Newb=good, polite, intelligent new member
No0b=annoying, pesky, bad new member

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your Password
Ok, first things first...NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER give out your password to anyone. If you recieve a pm asking you for your screen name and password because you've won something, you're suspected of hacking, or for any other reason....DON"T. It's a lie. Administration will never ask for your password no matter what, so even if the message seems real, it's not. It's someone trying to hack your profile and steal your stuff. Every time, no exceptions. Remember, if the admin plan on giving you something, or banning you, they'll just do it. They don't need your permission, or your password to do it. The TOS clearly states this. So be smart, never give out your info to ANYONE.
Check out this example I received recently.
If you decline, please ignore this message. If you choose to accept please fill out this form to verify your computers IP Address.
Grammar
Trust me, you do not want to screw this up. Gaians are very keen on flaming and harrassing someone who types like this: L1k3 OMG!!!!!!111!1!!!! M33P2!!!!!!! Dont make that mistake. It is the first sign of a noob, and Gaians look for it before anything else. Learn at least basic typing skills and you will be much better off.
Also, many new members choose to type with either the inproper use of capitals or none whatsoever. This is also very annoying, and you will almost surely be hassled for it. This is a site with forums and chats, not a cellphone. You can take the half a second it requires to hold shift for one letter. Do so.
Overuse of Emoticons
This is not as highly volatile as horrible typing, but it will put others on guard and could potentially lead to flaming. Flaming is bad, dont provoke it from someone. An overuse would be: Hi!!!! I'm doing fine!!! blaugh heart blaugh heart blaugh heart blaugh heart blaugh
You get the point. Annoying.
Excessive Friend Requests
While this may not seem bad at all to you, us older Gaians find it extremely bothersome to constantly get requests from noobs who have never talked to us and never plan to. Get to know someone before you invite them. Not doing so could result in a turned down request, being put on someone's ignore or block list, or even reported to the site mods. That is not something you want to happen to you, so behave and take your time. You'll make friends, I promise.
Begging
I emphasize this because it is the absolute worst thing you can do on this site. And yes, there is a difference between asking and begging. Begging is where the only thing you ever say to people is :Can you give me some gold? I need help getting stuff!!! Well guess what, friends? So does everyone else on this site. Most people on here are questing for something or another, and usually cant afford to give away hard earned gold. If, however, you are polite, or put in your sig about what your questing for and shut up about it, people have a tendency to help more. I warn you now, to prevent from being instantly labeled as a noob (which is bad), DO NOT BEG!!!
Flaming
Flaming is a word you hear referred to many times in descriptions of what to avoid, but as a newb, you may not know what flaming is. Flaming is the harrassment of another member due to noobishness, misbehavior, or out of spite. Many Gaians enjoy flaming noobs and newbs alike, as the noobs give all newcomers a bad reputation and reinforce the flaming. Trust me, with over 5 million users online, someone will, at one time or another, flame you. You can minimize this by listening to the advice of us Gaians, and learn as quickly as possible. It will spare you the stress.
This is what a fellow Gaian (DarkElf27) said on the subject...
Quote:
There are a few things that a lot of new members do that is not considered proper among most Gaians, and here are a few of them to help you out.
'Txt Tlkng'
I see lots and lots and lots of newbies doing this, using numbers and single letters, shortened words and acronyms to post, as if it were a chat room. This is looked down upon quite a bit. Gaia isn't a chatroom site, it's a forum board. You have plenty of time to type it out, please try to do so. This includes not doing things like using looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooots of characters in a word, talkin lyk ths, using numbers 2 talk, and USING ALL CAPS (Or not capitalizing when appropriate).
OMG!!!!11!!!1111!!!!ONE!7!SEVEN!
I see this too much. It gives me a headache. Please, no more than 3 exclamation marks, it's rather rude to have a long string of meaningless mumbo-jumbo after a sentence. It annoys people, and they yell at you.
Emoticon over-use
Nothing bugs people quite as much as people that use millions of emoticons (Smilies) in their post. A common example is "Please help me I'm poor!! crying crying crying crying crying crying crying ", or such like that. One is quite sufficient. (To be honest, most people dislike seeing the crying emote at all.)
Disabled PM's
I can't count the number of times I've seen this. People go around the forums, talking, and ask someone to PM them about something or another, and then they have their PM's disabled. When no one can PM you, it's impossible for people to give you help or offers, or talk to you in private. To make sure your PM's are not disabled, go to Profile>Mail>Receive private messages>Yes
Random Friend Requests
I advise against this, even though many people do it. It usually annoys other members, especially if you use it to pounce on them as soon as they're online with a 'was up' PM.
Random PM's
While these are okay most of the time, I heavily reccomend that you only PM people if you have a reason. If you're just looking to chat with someone, there are millions of threads in the Chatterbox forum, full of people doing just that.
Random Trades
If you are sending new trades to people, it's usually a good idea to let them know why. If not, they'll just cancel it, and might even block you for harrassing them about it. If you're asking for donations, there're forums for that, if you're trying to buy something, clarify by PM before sending the trade.
Multiple Threads
Especially in guilds, this can get annoying. You only need to make one thread on a subject, especially if it's just asking for gold, or advertising a quest.
Posting in the Wrong Forum
Often times, when a newbie has a question, they will simply go to somewhere like 'Welcome to Gaia' or 'General Discussion'. This annoys the Welcomers, and GDers (General Discussion Forum posters) will flame you and insult you. I advise you to avoid doing that, because then people will be less likely to help you and more likely to grumble about you to a friend later in the day. Instead, please ask your questions in the 'Questions & Assistance' forum, which is dedicated to answering questions and helping with problems. There are subforums for more specific problems.
-Foray
The stare icon
The stare icon is usually considered hostile, so watch how you use it.
I think I've hit all the main points. If not, just tell me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now that we've covered a bunch of stuff you shouldn't do, let's get into some things you can take advantage of on Gaia to make your experience more productive and interesting.

Trading Pass and Vending License

If you have been on the site more than a couple of days, you probably know you need it. Here's a reminder. Make the Trading Pass the absolute first thing you get. It will save you later if somene DOES decide to donate and cant because you dont have a pass. It costs 500 gold. You can purchase it in the Bank.

A vending license is good if you decide you are tired of something but cant sell it at the stores. Buy a vending license (1000 gold) and try to sell your items to the masses of Gaia. Many times you'll find the Marketplace to be your favorite tool on Gaia. Use it to find items you want at prices often cheaper than you would find elsewhere, plus items that cant be found in stores. This can be found when you go to the trade screen or the Marketplace.

Polls

Poll whore. Poll whore. Then poll whore some more. Polls are the easiest, quickest, and least labor intensive way to make gold on Gaia. There are plenty of guilds out there that are devoted to the illustrious poll whore, and thousands of random topics with polls posted. They give you about 10 gold for every poll, so if you were to do 100 polls a day, you'd be making over a thousand just on the polls themselves, not to mention the posts you make, and searching for said polls. So go out there and join the ranks of poll-whoredom.

*NOTE* For many people, the polls go down in value if you overdo them. If you notice that you only are making a few gold after a while, switch to posting or playing games. The more things you do, the more money you make. Because of the new layout of the site, polls are no longer stuck at 10 gold a piece. They start off higher, but lower quickly like most other ways of money-making. Remember, variety is key to making money.

Games

Games. Everyone loves playing games from time to time, and Gaia likes to make its members as happy as possible. So, there are a few very fun games available to play, with others constantly being proposed and worked on. There are classics like Slots and Cards, and more interesting Gaia games such as Word Bump and Fishing. Each games has its own rewards, varying from tickets that can be used to purchase items, piles of gold, Gaiaversary Credits that can be used for clothing, to special house items like pictures! The Fishing game even lets you collect fish and junk. What possible use could you have for junk and fish? Every item holds its own secrets......There is also the new Jigsaw game, which allows to, what else, play with jigsaw puzzles! You can win gold and items, all while putting together a collection of spiffy puzzles!

~~~~~~~~~~Holiday Events~~~~~~~~~~
Probably one of the best aspects of the site are the times when Gaians and newbs alike wait in anticipation for the elusive Holiday Event. Usually, Gaia hosts an event every two to three months, but there are a few of which that happen every year, which we will go into detail about a little later. Gaia often has events that are centered around what is going on around the site, as well as influences imposed by its members. One example of such is the crater on the World Map, which appeared after a duel between two of Gaia's NPCs (Non-Playable Characters). Every year, however, Gaia has a few events that always occur around the same time of year, in celebration of holidays. These events include:
-Easter
-Halloween
-Christmas/New Year's Day
Each has their own aspects and items to collect, and once they are over the items can never be found again, except in the Marketplace. Here they will be explained.
Easter
Robotic Easter Bunnies, Easter egg hunts, and Easter baskets are only a few of the things found on this holiday. Some of the items that have been recieved on this pastel-colored event include Easter Bunny Ears, a plushie carrot for your home, and the Bunny shirt. If you are a rabbit lover or just a fan of Easter, then this is the holiday event for you.
Halloween
With the darker holiday approaching, Gaia undergoes a change. Rumors begin to spread of mysterious goings0-on around the site, and people begin spotting things such as lights in the sky, grunnies that bite people on a whim, and zombies who flood the site with their flesh-eating corpses. Also, a rarely-seen NPC makes his annual appearance. His name is Jack. The sworn enemy of Santa Claus, he is the King of Halloween, as well as it's signature plant, the pumpkin. This dark, terrifying figure hands out mysterious grab-bags each year to devoted trick-or-treaters, giving them the opportunity to join his ranks. Every year he releases another set of his clothes to the public, including the Jacked set, the Jack Uniform set, and others. There are also other items available, such as the ability to become a zombie, or even an alien!
Christmas/New Year's
Around this merry time of year, the snow falls, and Santa's elves make an appearance. The shop owners get into the swing of things, giving out presents, and the big guy himself, Saint Nicholas, shows up to give out his own giftboxes laden with goodies. These include the Holly Jolly set, which has boots, coat, gloves, and all the things a mall-Santa-to-be could ever want! I bundle New Years with Christmas due to their proximity, but during it there is the fabulous Gambino New Year's Ball, where Gaia's most powerful man hosts a bash the likes of which your gaian counterpart has never seen.
Below I have listed some of the less widely celebrated holidays, but still fun times on Gaia!
Valentine's Day
With this holiday, the cupid of love begins firing his arrows at will, and Gaia gains a rosy character for a few days. Being that this holiday is all about the love, you can go about the site kissing other gaians and gaining cute little gifts in return! Spread the Love!!!
St. Patrick's Day
A relatively new feature on Gaia, St. Patrick's Day obviously centers around gold. I mean, c'mon, an entire holiday devoted to leprachaun gold? Sounds good? Well, we'll see!
That in essence is a summary of Gaia's events. Each year they change and become more diverse, adding new twists (and items) to every gaian's life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Item Events

Quite different from holiday events, item events are randomly occuring gifts you would get for being a part of the Gaia family. These occur totally at random, and are not dependent on activity or posting. Once commonplace, since the site upgrade they have not happened. There is however a link, that when clicked upon, will send you to your inventory so that you may check if you have recieved one. This is a capture. If you were supposed to have a random capture then a giftbox or trunk shall appear in your inventory. If not, well....try again tomorrow. The link below will send you to the thread where the event link can be found. It also goes into more detail about events.

http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18146557&vdis=1

UPDATE: It has come to my attention that the random events are finally back! If ever see recieve a message as you are flipping through the pages of Gaia, remember to click on it. You may get a very welcome surprise!

Donation Items/Monthly Collectables

Every Month since the beginning of Gaia's rich life on the web, it's creators have awarded helpful contributions by giving out letters which, when opened, contain a unique item exclusive to that month. Only people who gave money for the site could aquire these wonderful items, and the non-donators jealousy could be felt. There have been many such letter released, and most contain two to three seperate items, of which the owner must choose one. That is, except for the first and original donation letter which only contained one item. That item was the Angelic Halo. All avi's who hold this item are revered by Gaian's, as they have been here since the beginning. Here is a full list of all the donation items that have been released as of now. Prepare yourselves for item lust...

For a full list of the regular items, as well as other helpful options, check out TekTek, which will be explained in the next section.

TekTek

TekTek....you will hear its name uttered across the site at one time or another. This is the name of the partner site for Gaia. It basically encompasses all the features Gaia itself does not, including code writing for your profile, a full items list of all Gaia's many items, a selection for quest bars so others can see what it is you are raising money for, signature pics and codes, and much, much more! The link to the site is http://www.tektek.org. Use it to search for that item you want the most, check the Marketplace's prices on that item (with a handy graph and price history), and create your dream avi; the avatar you want more than anything else in the Gaian world! You can now also see what your value is; that is, it will tally up all your items and tell you how much your total inventory is worth together. Enjoy!

Quests

You've heard it mentioned several times earlier in this guide; well, here it is. What are quests? Quests are when a Gaian sees an item and decides that they can not live without it. Let me use an example.

StarryDynamo is posting in the Chatterbox one day when she sees another avatar, by the name of rio_san, wearing an item known as the Helm of the Vikings. StarryDynamo is immediately enamored by this lovely hat and decides that she wants it. Rio_san, having been on the site for a long time, got this item out of a random giftbox. Our hero Starry hasn't been that lucky, so she decides to go on a Quest. She immediately puts the Helm on her wishlist and in her signature, hoping someone will see she is searching for it. As she posts and travels about the by-ways of Gaia, she collects gold, ever nearing the price it will cost to buy this oh-so-coveted item from the Marketplace.

One day, she gets online, does some posting, and realizes that at long last, after hours and hours of tiring journal entries, after thousands of emotional clicks, after tears of frustration and anguish, that she has finally reached her goal! She races to the Marketplace, finds the vendor she has so long felt a cruel peddler of false hope and lies, and now feels that she is a saint. She purchases her Helm, and cries out in victory, "I DID IT!!!!" Thus, our story is concluded, with StarryDynamo now happy with her new item, and all the world the way it should be.

In the example, our hero went around Gaia advertising in her signature about what she was questing for, collected gold and refrained from spending it, no matter how much she wanted something else. Eventually she succeeded in getting the right amount of gold and bought her item, which truly is a great feeling when you have worked hard. That is the essence of questing for items. Some items will be relatively cheap, and often times other members will donate gold or items to help in your quest. Sometimes they will even give you the item you are searching for out of the kindness of their hearts. This is what questing is all about; the search for your prized item, and the work it takes to get there. Persevere, and you can accomplish any goal, no matter how costly or improbable.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Things to Keep in Mind~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This section will be devoted to things you should remember when traversing Gaia, both for your own enjoyment....and your own safety.
Terms of Service (TOS)
I'm going to post this as a lot of people have never actually read the TOS and should. This is the simplified version of it, so it should be easy to understand. Trust me, it will help. This is only part of it, but backs up many of the things I've already said.
Quote:
Message Postings:
-We recommend that you keep your posts relevant to the forum in which you are currently in. Try to make your posts informative and/or entertaining. We understand that there's always some 'noise' in the form of bumps, greetings and so on. On the whole, please show some relevance.
-Spam should only be posted in the Chatterbox forum.
-No stalking. Persistent harassment of an individual or group of individuals against their wishes is not permitted on Gaia Online. If someone asks you to stop, please leave them alone. Continued harassment will result in punishment.
-No overly abusive language. We have a very liberal policy regarding language, but please try to be civil and courteous towards your fellow Gaians. If your post is excessively vulgar, insulting, explicit, self-deprecating or racial without any justification, we will promptly delete it.
-Endorsing illicit activities or encouraging crime is not permitted.
-When commenting artworks or reviewing web links, please try to be constructive in your criticism or praise. If your comments are found to be excessively insulting or vulgar, your account may be penalized.
-Sexually explicit posts maybe deleted. Cybering is absolutely not allowed anywhere on the site, including PMs.
Image Postings:
-Please keep signatures less than 500 pixels in size in both width and height, and a total byte-size of less than 100,000 bytes. Ability to post signatures may be removed if you do not comply with a moderator's request to follow this standard.
-Try to keep your images PG-13. Tasteful nudity in the art forums is allowed on a case-by-case basis, but on the whole, it is a good idea to cater to a range of audiences. This includes the very young.
Repurcussions:
-Failure to follow the rules above may result in a temporary ban from the system. Repeat offenders will be permanently banned. Grounds for banning also include:
Botting. Using an automated script, macro, or refreshing feature to post or surf webpages in order to generate Gold (Botting) is forbidden. The use of any software or codes to generate gold without the need for you being in front of your computer is generally considered as botting. Anyone suspected of botting will have their account banned.
Scamming. We reward our users with Gold and hard to find rares, but we have no tolerance for people who try to take other users' assets with get-rich-quick schemes or promises of rare items. Running any kind of scam - including but not limited to lottery scams or trade scams.
Hacking. Hacking is defined as "the unauthorized access to another user's account". Attempts to hack, trying to obtain another user's passwords will lead to banning.
Impersonating a Gaia Staff Member. This includes Administrators and Moderators.
We have designed these rules in order to minimize conflict and maximize your enjoyment of the site. Our moderators have the power to enforce such rules and act on behalf of Gaia's best interests.
As a general rule, always log off after every session to prevent others from logging in as yourself and trading your Gold and items away. You should also know that under NO circumstances will Gaia Online officials ask you to reveal your password. NEVER give your password away to ANYONE.
Failure to comply with these rules and guidelines may result in disciplinary action and ultimately in the termination of your Gaia Online account. For a more detailed outline of these rules, you may also read our TERMS OF SERVICE agreement.
Announcements
Announcements are released by Gaia's staff when new features have been put into effect or there are things they wish us to know. Many announcements involve the release of new items, such as the monthly donation items and new clothes in stores. They also involve information on what the staff is working on, and what to expect in the future. So if you see that you have an announcement waiting (made apparent by the megaphone on your gaia toolbar), check it. You may find its contents helpful from time to time. All recent announcements can also be looked at in the Main Forum list.
Think you could make a guide on questing? For between 2k & 5k? (Depending on length, how descriptive it is, how helpful it is, how organized it is, how accurate it is, etc... I can take care of making it pretty blaugh )
If you're willing to do it but would like a "price adjustment", just ask.
I will take your offer! Hell, i'll do just about anything for help on some of my bigger quests lol. There is actually another copy of this thread in the Newbie training Guild, but it is more updated. I shall copy it over and make some add-ons. Thanx!
AWESOME! I feel like this guild REALLY needs a sticky guide on how to quest & make quest threads heart I'll probably (depending on the quality of your quest info guide) make a similiar offer after you're done.
Also, would you like to be a Mod? I'm almost certain Rio would be fine with it.
