Does anyone have any suggestions about what exactly should be done to save the ED? It's obvious that we should report all the spammer posts and posts that violate the rules of the ED, but we should probably have a better strategy.
Here are a few of the ideas I've heard:
1. stop responding to their posts (at all)
2. stop flaming them, which may only serve to provoke
3. petition for more mods. Already a thread for this, and someone started the petition.
Are there any other ideas? We need all the ideas we can get.

I agree. I say we could help by making punishment more serious, or limiting the number of pictures that can be posted in one post. Or at least the number of the same picture. They do that with the same number of emotecons.

They do that with the same number of emotecons. I think that setting a limit on images would be great (though I'm unsure how they could make such a restriction built-in). While one, two, maybe even three images are okay, if you really need to post a plethora of images, a link to said images may well be enough.

If they made a limit on how many of the same picture(like most trolls do) it would help so that pages aren't lengthened to a degree were you have to scroll down constantly, maybe since they limited the size of your signature they can also limit the size of the picture when you post. They can try to make such a restriction by have a preset system to check the size(even if they use tinyurl and such it'll still check). Although I don't know how that works.

The only thing I can come up with is moving the Extended Discussion button to another place on the forums map that people would have to make an effort to happen upon. It is too close to the General Discussion one currently.

people can easily get around that. for example, i would take a picture, say hitler and i would tiny url it ten times, even if the amount of times you could post an image was 3 it wouldn't matter because i can repost the links 3 times 10 times giving me thirty, then i just post it qoute it, and redo. giving me hitler sixty times.

If you post emoticons, after a certain point they just say :whatevertheysay: instead of the picture.

Another thing that could help is to educate people in the ED about their powers as a thread starter.
If a thread starter puts a user on ignore they are essentially banned from posting within the thread that person started, as well as any other thread started by the person in question.
I'm pretty sure a thread starter can go through and delete posts in their thread, basically acting as a moderator of their own ED thread.
If more thread starters used their abilities as a thread starter to clean up their threads, a lot of problems we see with trolls wouldn't come up.
Also, mistakes can be corrected folks. If you get too chatty or fail to resist troll feeding, you can always delete or edit your own posts in a thread. It reduces the workload of the mods and the clutter of a thread if you go through and engage in clean up of your own posts.

What if we made a list of spammers/trolls we could put on our ignore list! Then they couldn't post in any of our threads, and since we will soon rule the ED...ta da!

You should have to take a test to get into the ED. Something where you write why you think you should be able to be in the ED, and then a mod will read it and let them in or not. Not really something hard or detailed, but enough to where you have to put some effort in it. That or just have a person have to make a certain amount of posts before they can get in.
Edit: Also despatch of all the current mods and then replace them with people like us. Seriously the mods currently suck, and if you see this mod, I want you to know this: Suck it.

Stained_Steel I think we need to get some admins and mods in this guild just so they can see our suggestions and ideas. I think it's likely that they will check it out. The recent flood of ED spam is a big deal, no? So I doubt that this guild will go unnoticed. Anyway, as for my suggestion... I've said this before, but maybe we could try and PM some spammers and ask them why they spam? Not only would it be interesting to hear their responses, but we might learn something. I once went into a thread in the GD complaining about EDers because they were "elitist". Maybe lots of spammers spam for that reason. If we could make the spammers see that we just want them to RESPECT us and stop bothering us, maybe that would help clarify the situation in their minds. Maybe it would help. Also, what is the deal with mods? Can the Gaia staff just let normal users be mods, or do the potential mods have to go through some sort of application process? I've heard that the Gaia staff says that they can't give the ED more mods now, so I'm wondering why not, I guess. I think a lot of people in this guild would be good mods.

From what I remember, normal members can become mods. The problem is that their history is taken into account and getting in is difficult. People who know mods personally, especially in real life, have the advantage because they can put a good word in for them. Other than that, I don't really know how it works. That is one of the main problems. The thing is, it's not something we can change easily. We think the Chatterbox is full of morons, correct? It's the same concept. People don't understand why we choose to argue about subjects that may piss you or the people around you off. There's also the fact that we stick to the rules, unlike many other areas, which makes us look like we have sticks rammed up our asses. You have to take the good with the bad in some cases.

Well, the PM idea isn't a bad one, but it isn't a great one either. There are a few spammers and such which would behave if you talked to them. But, you could also hit an especially malicious one. That kind of spammer then proceeds to fill yoru inbox with porn using mule after mule after mule. None of us wants the home front to move to our inboxes.
