Lately I've Seemed to notice there is a rather large body of gaians that do NOT understand the concept of the "send to friendslist" option in PMs and the basic definition of a chain letter. Here is a basic guide including rules and ways you can get yourself into trouble.
First we'll begin with the purpose of sending to friendslists. This does not mean that every little message to anyone you send to everyone. If its meant only for five people then send it only to those five people please. Nobody likes inbox clutter right?
Things to send to your friendslists can include:
-holiday wishes
-wedding or event invitations *like holding a party in the forums or towns*
-art or item auctions
-charity quests
-arena submission links etc...
Things that shouldnt be sent:
-chain letters! Its not a rumor boys and girls they ARE against gaia rules and can get you banned!!!!!
-"hey lolamcpeepee you still owe me for that commission" We dont all need to read that.
Now I'll move on to the definition of a chain letter. As it seems there is some confusion as to what defines a chain letter.
There seems to be a common misconception that if it doesnt say "send this to 10 people or your innards will turn inside out, all your teeth will go rotten and an alien zurg will impregnate you through your nostril" its not a chain. Let me better define what a chain letter is.
*ahem* ANYTHING THAT SAYS TO SEND IT TO OTHER PEOPLE!
This includes:
-the stereotypical send this to 10 people in the next 15 minutes or your crush will eat your brains and bury you in their back yard
-petitions. Thats right, you can get banned for forwarding these. There is a forum where you can post them, and then present them to the admins. Posting in p.m.s will only get you in trouble.
-ANYTHING insisting you'll get gold if you click this link and telling you to spread the news. A lot of these will also ask you for your password and user name. Please use your common sense. There are innumerable people out there with little enough of a life that they want to get all your gaia stuff the easy way. If you really want to give everything you own away do it through a charity quest...otherwise wake up and smell the coffee...these are dangerous and you can lose a lot more than just getting banned you can lose everything!
-anything saying its from a mod asking you to forward it. Trust me a moderator would not send this. So even if it says avoid such and such a user and dont open messages labled this...we're too busy to send it out so help the mods. This is most likely user sabatoge. Anyone could claim to be a mod and send out a message saying not to open anything from me...but a mod would list anything of apparrent danger in the announcements thread. That megaphone up there next to your avatar yep, thats what its for. Anything fitting in this category is impersonating a moderator AND a chain letter...report such threads immediately.
-anything I might have missed.
Now that we have that all out of the way, I hope you all understand what sort of danger you put yourself in by sending these to people and I hope you have a better understanding of the purpose of a friends list.
