Alright. I am religeously against using game guides. The only condition I would allow anyone within close enough range to punch in the face to use them would be if it were a very HARD game and they had already beaten it and were looking for goodies.
Anyway. My brother and I were at our local game crazy a long while back, and he deftly spots/snatches up the guide for L:SSSC, for which I begin to heavily chastise him upon notice.
"Quiet, I'm not GETTING it, I just wanna thumb through it. Go get your game."
Well, a bit of browsing later, he snuck up behind me, scared the living piss out of me, and tugged me aside to show me a page.
Me: "It's just showing you how to beat Ghaleon."
Him: "Nono, look at after the battle."
It was, of course, outlining the dramatic scene between possessed Althena/Luna and Alex. On said scene, it went through the dialogue, and then proceded to tell you to...
..die.
Appearently, the guy who wrote it either wanted to destroy the dreams of some poor sods who can't think for themselves by saying that there was absolutely no way to save Luna, that the only option was to get a game over by not using the Ocarina, or they were themselves complete dumb jicks who couldn't solve anything for themselves.

Any comments about this little story? Feelings on guides and the people who use them? Stories of your own?

What game guide is that? I own the official Lunar SSSC guide and it tells you to use the ocarina.

Also, if you guys can, get the Lunar 1 and Lunar 2 game guides. It's the funniest guide ever. It just mocks everything (Plus it brings stickers!)

I use game guides a lot, but only after I've beaten a game once. I've never seen the Lunar:SSSC guide, so I don't know what's in it. The only exception to my little game guide rule was Final Fantasy VIII. I was totally stuck and didn't know what to do, so I asked my buddy Jake to let me borrow his guide so I could get through this one part. In the end, I used the guide to beat the rest of the game. I think guides can be very useful tools for beating games, but only use them on the first playthrough if you get really stuck.

I onlyt get the guides if I really like a game. Like a souvenir or a collection item of the fandom.

I dunno, it was one of the cheapo ones that had Lunar and a couple other games smashed together in it.

Yeah, I'd get 'em if I could find 'em anywhere (not allowed to use Ebay ;-; ). All I've seen of 'em are the previews at the end of the manuals.

I might quote it when I get home.

Also the Lunar 2 guide has an incredible bonus: The lunatic parade comics. All except the Lemina one. Those are very amusing!

Yeah. The Leo one is the funniest of them all. I laughed so hard when I read it. You guys must do a web search for them or something! xd

Yeah. I agree on the collecting thing. I got the guides as part of the sets, because I went the extra mile to get the (American PS) collector packages for the games. My wife likes the Lucia's Pendant that came with EBC. The official guides are funny as heck, have tons of artwork, and include other bonuses like interviews, the comics, and bromide stickers.

As for guides in general, I agree that they are really for super hard (or poorly designed) games, and for completists to get all the goodies. Frankly, I never look at guides in stores. I get all my gaming guidance from GameFAQS. It's free, it's fast, they're written by gamers, and you have your choice of guides if one doesn't tell you what you need.

I loved the pendant. Wore it for a year, every day, before it broke. XD
