So how many of you have heard of Nanowrimo? How many of you actually got involved this year?

Now, I'm no writer - not by a longshot. >.< But this year a couple of my friends and I decided to take a stab at it together. I figured, what the hell? It was a challenge, and challenge is what makes us stronger, and teaches us our limits.

So I signed up, and now with the final hours of nano ticking down, I find myself alone. All of the others I was writing with have flaked out around me. Now I'm left with almost 43000 words, which means that finishing is very possible, only I don't really see the point anymore because it will be a hollow victory.

So what I want to know is... is anyone else out there still doing this? And finished or almost finished?

Wasn't this for November? Well, if I start now, I wouldn't have that much of a chance.

Besides, who would consider a work of a 14-year-old to be gold? Maybe I should try next year. xD One year of wisdom might help.

Yeah, it's for November, which means that as of right now, you have about 9 hours ^_^;

But don't worry about being 14 - Nano's not about quality, it's about quantity. See, like anything else, writing takes practice - the more you write, the better you get (theoretically ^_^). Nano gives you an excuse to write, and a goal to write hard. 30 days, 50000 words. If you manage to do that, you may not write Shakespeare or Milton, but you'll still prove to yourself that you can accomplish something to do with writing. And just the attempt will make you a better writer because of the practice.

Or on the other hand, you might find out that you're not really ready to be a writer, like i did. Yes, i finished nano. But i didn't like it. And i don't like what i wrote, because it was rushed and not properly researched and thought out. i'll never do anything like nano again, and i'll never try to be a pro writer.

Well, try again next year.

What was your novel about?

It was about 50,000 words long.

Ha ha, just kidding - it was about a bunch of people who suddenly wake up from suspended animation aboard a massive futuristic starship with absolutely no clue how they got there, or where they're going. Here is the text from my profile excerpt:

Quote:
“Am I supposed to get on that platform?” McCaffery shouted, irritably. The speculation was beginning to fray his nerves. “You know it would be nice to maybe give me some instructions! It’s a little disorienting waking up in the middle of a freaking MAUSOLEUM with NO IDEA what's going on, you know! You could at least tell me something like ‘don't panic’, or something! Even a freaking arrow to point the way would be nice!”

Without any fuss, on the platform between him and the smaller platform a section of the floor glowed in the shape of an arrow pointing to the smaller platform. After a moment's pause, the words “DON'T PANIC” glowed on the floor just below the arrow.

McCaffery stood staring dumbly for a minute. Then put his hands on his hips and pursed his lips, nodding with an exasperated expression. He looked upwards and shouted, “Good! Right! Thank you!”

“Thanks a heap,” he muttered, stepping onto the smaller platform. At least one thing had been confirmed for him. There was an intelligence monitoring him; this was not simply an automated process, and he was not completely alone. That meant that it was unlikely that his awakening had been accidental, and that he might starve to death before anyone realized the error. That this intelligence apparently had a sense of humour was noteworthy, although he was unsure whether that was comforting or not.

The sections of glowing railing for both the smaller platform and the larger platform that had been removed in order to board the smaller platform reappeared, oozing from the existing railing like a computer generated special effect. Once the railing was restored, the arrow and previous message vanished from the floor, and the words “YOU'RE WELCOME” glowed in their place.

Nano 2007 is comin up again, and i think i'm gonna take another stab it. Ya, i know, i said i never would... but i'm really kind of stupid like that. Like this:

i'd be the person on the right.

So anyway, this year i'm actually thinking and preparing in advance - so i don't end up doing stream of consciousness rambling again. i can't write a preview though, because that would be against the rules.

rofl (saved that picture). I don't think the person on the right is dumber, just more curious and willing to make sacrifices to understand things.
