"Alrighty...I've discovered that several of my martial art friends can kick a** at the famous Super Smash Bros. Melee, though I haven't challenged them yet. I managed to defeat one of them, and he told me two of our other friends are better than he is. And I was told by another friend of mine, along this guy's girlfriend, that my friend Brandon is always bragging about how good he is. So...I created this thread to discuss the game and its significance. I plan on hosting a tornament with my friends within the next few months, and I've never been in the mood to lose at this game, so I would like advice on how to do a few glitch techniques (example: wavedash), which characters to use & why, and any other hints and tips that might help.
The characters I usually use are Link and Roy. Roy used to be my all-time favorite, until I got beat enough times by my cousins. I realized that he lacks projectiles, which meant I could only attack at close-range. Then, since there are only two more characters with a sword and projectiles, I decided to switch to Link as my main player. With Link, I've become much better at the game, the only problem is: I can only complete Event Match 51 with Roy because of his counter attack. Other characters I'm fairly good with: Mario, Ganondorf, Kirby, Capt. Falcon.
...please share your thoughts."

xD "I just fought did a handicap match...Link Hc-1, and Ganon Hc-6. I was flung off the stage like a pebble." crying These handicap matches are challenging though.

I had a break in classes today and went to the student center. Someone had brought a GCN and SSBM. I played for the first time in a year with Young Link (Roy not available). I actually got 2nd place after not playing for a whole year. whee

I use Falco and Ganon a lot. Speed and average attacks on Falco often let me win over time as well as evade better. But Ganon allows me to keep in balance and learn defense while using powerful blows on time. The skills they both enhance make me better with each time I play. It's just a simple way to enhance your skills gradually though no real trick to it.

"I usually fight against Ganon for training my speed with my character, and how I can adapt to that character's weight. And since he is the hardest to knock off, I play automatic handicap with him. But I just realized that I'm already good in that area, so I'll start doing that against light and/or fast people like Zelda/Shiek, Fox, and Capt Falcon."

I just realized I'm pretty good with Marth. He faster and heavier, so he's harder to knock off, and since his sweet spot is on the tip of his sword, you use the sword to keep opponents at bay rather than beat them down. Also, Marth's counter lasts longer, but only does 7% no matter the attack he blocks. Roy's counter is shorter, but hits for 1.5 times the damage of the attack blocked. All-in-all, Marth and Roy are both good. But Marth should not be used in an all-out melee. He can't really hold his own when his in the midst of three opponents. Roy is a total monster in all-out melee on the other hand, especially since his sweet spot is in the middle of his sword. When it comes to one-on-one fights, though, Marth is better, I think.
Edit: Since Marth's sweet spot is on the tip, it can be easy to miss an attack, though. If that happens, he's wide open to a counterattack.
