Forest Melody

The forest is filled with so many mysteries. I have lived here my whole life and have yet to discover all that it has to offer. My back feels as if it is about to burn because of the sun’s rays that are pounding against it. Unable to take the heat any longer I take shelter under the shade of a pine tree. I love the way it smells under here, so fresh and full of life. I lean back against the rough bark of the tree. To cushion my head from the roughness I place my hands right behind my head. I look up to see the patches of light wandering in through the tree limbs. The branches are also swaying, so smoothly, and I can here music… Not from the trees though, from the forest, it’s an ocarina… My eyelids close and I am no longer with the world.
“Wake up sleepy head!” Someone kicked my side and I wake up unaware of where I am at, and very startled on top of that. I see who the culprit is, and I give him a glare. “What is it Garet?” I growled.
“You didn’t forget did you?
“Forget what?”
“We’re going to stop the logger from destroying our home.”
“Oh! I totally forgot!” I leaped up from my position on the ground.
“Wow, Alex, I have to stay on top of you don’t I?”
“Sorry, I heard the ocarinas.”
“You heard them again?” His voice faded off and I could barely hear him. “Lucky…” He turned away and started running in a northward direction.
“Hey! Wait for me!” I stumbled after him, and tripped over a tree branch. I almost cursed at it in anger. Garet ran back over to me and offered his hand, I took it and he pulled me up. “You need to be more careful Alex.”
“Yeah, you’re right, but this isn’t the way.”
“I know that, we’re getting your ocarina.”
“Why?”
“You’ll find out after we get it.”
I rolled my eyes at him. Why was he like that all the time? He always played games with me. It often got annoying.
A few minutes later, we arrived to an oak home, which was a house made from a tree, in this case, and oak tree. Garet ran into the house and returned with the ocarina in his hand. “Okay here.” He handed it over to me and I sighed as I took it and placed it in my pocket. “Okay, let’s go already, they’ll be here any minute now.” I headed towards the entrance of the woods; I could already here the engines of logging machines roaring in my ears. I also imagined what would happen if we didn’t get there in time. The underbrush scattered everywhere, broken remnants of trees and tree homes. I clutched my fist so tightly at this thought that I could feel the wet warmth of blood excreting from my palm.
Garet and I came to a halt when we arrived; the machines had already started plowing. “Okay, play now.” I knew what he was talking about and pulled at the tiny instrument. I slowly brought it to my lips and played it slowly, the pitch then grew quick and I could hear paws pounding against the earth. I continued to play, and right before me, I saw a wolf jump into the driver’s seat of one of the machines. I could here a human scream in pain, he fell out of the machine, the same thing happened to the humans in the other two machines. I placed my ocarina in my pocket, “Come on, we have to stop them before the go wild.” Without a driver, they would certainly go out of control. I jumped into the nearest machine and cut the wires with a mini dagger I had attached to my belt. Garet had followed suit and had already disable the two machines before I finished mine. He was now sitting beside me. “You are slow.” He smirked at me. I just shook my head, and slugged him in the arm so that he would fall out. I just started laughing. “Hey…” He rubbed his arm. “That hurt, ya know?”
“Yeah, whatever… baby.” I smiled. “We did it, we saved them,” I paused for a bit, “but how did you know about the ocarina?”
“I’ve heard you play, and I watched woodland creatures gather around you, so I thought you could summon help with your music. It’s like you play the forest melody.”
“Yeah I guess I do.” I smiled and jumped down from the machine.
“Well, I guess we’ll have to get the others to help us take these out of here.”
“That we do, Garet, that we do,” I grinned at him and ran back into our tree-inhabited home. I heard the music again, it was in my mind, I looked back at Garet, and he didn’t seem to hear it. I shook my head softly and continued running swiftly through the obstacles the forest had to offer. I made one new discovery about this mysterious land, and that was, anything, or anyone can make a difference.
