Ah, but yes I have heard of Lion King having elements of Hamlet in it, I don't believe it's completely based off of it, but it does have strong ties in with Medieval and Renaissance-era literature. A lot of the ideas are similar to Hamlet, and it's ideology and archetypes fit well with that time-period's perceptions. Thus, why Lion King has such a majestic nobility that seemingly surpasses time, throughout the generations. That's why Shakespeare's works, Old English stories, such as King Arthur and others are still told today. They have a moral and a meaning that evokes timeless tales. and I'd say that Lion King is one of them. What made these 'tales of the past' so great is what also composes the heart of tlk and keeps its strength going. In other words, The Lion King is a wonderful story with oldworld elements and modern applicants, making it the best of both worlds, go tlk!

Hm! Couldn't have said it better myself, Kage Tenma. The fact that this movie is based loosely on something so profound as hamlet is astonishing to me. I know this movie has deep elements to it, but to be tied with a play hundreds of years old really means something. Knowing that only makes TLK that much more meaningful! ^_^

Yeah, I learned about the connection when I was in a high school production of Hamlet! 2 is most likely based off Romeo and Juliette, but so are about a bazillion other things. 1 1/2 is based off of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Though it is not a Sakespeare work, it stars two of them.
Simba-Hamlet Nala-Ophelia Mufasa-King Hamlet, the ghost Scar-Claudius Serabi-Gertrude Timon-Rosencrantz Puumba-Guildenstern Zazu-Polonious Rafiki-Horatio and/or Shakespeare.
