Has anyone read this novel? The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. At first I was bored and was about to abandon it for another book, but now I can't seem to put it down. Even when the plot is lacking, I really like Plath's writing style. Besides, I'm sure it will come together in the end. I'm only on page 110 or so. Please do NOT give away anything if you have read this!

Delnia Nope, I've never read it. Is it any good? Yeah it's pretty much my second favorite book as of right now. I'm halfway through.

What's fascinating about the Bell Jar is the author's decision to dispense with the traditional male version of mental instability - ie hysterics or hallucinations - to instead explore the grim, understated, internal reality of depression. I've not read a better book in a ong time, although to say it's about insnaity is like saying One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is about insanity, which it really isn't.

I remember finding it in my school's library. I had some free time so I sat down and started reading it. And I couldn't put it down. I think I may have "forgotten" to go to a few classes afterwards. I just read it in one go. It's so powerful and and and... ahh, I have no words. It's one of those books that haunts you forever [am I being dramatic? Ok, a tad].

[.Eponine.] At first I was bored and was about to abandon it for another book, but now I can't seem to put it down. Haha, really? I was hooked right from the first page! Referring to a balloon as a cadaver's head? sweet. I enjoyed this book for Plath's dark sense of humor and wittiness. I could relate to the main character in different situations-dealing with people who are caught up with their own unrealistic dreams, disappointing realizations of a boy I admired, etc. Haven't gotten to the point of pyschiatric therapy though. As macabre as suicide is considered in America, Plath made me laugh with the character's various attempts. It's interesting to research Plath's life and see how this book reflects her as a person-her outlooks on society, men, women, success, etc. She's my second favorite author.
