I have many topics I'd like to see discussed!
Yes, I do have a topic that should be discussed.
No, I'm bad at coming up with topics.
No, but I really want to see a lot of topics come from other people!
Not right now, but I'll be thinking hard to come up with some topics!

I've heard suggestions that we should spam the ED with good, ED-worthy threads, and thus, push down the ones that do not belong or the ones of poor quality.
I am making this thread for ideas.

I would like people to post subjects they would like to be discussed, and I would like people to also post how the thread would be set out. Like, what sorts of resources should it use, news paper sources, books, etc.? Should the thread require more than one post for the OP? How many discussion questions should there be for this topic? Etc. You do not have to be the OP for a topic you suggest.
I will then put the topics along with their descriptions in the following post, and I will also put the names of the users who will start them.

I think we should get a large list of topics so that whoever knows about the topic, has read about the topic, or has studied anything dealing with the topic, can see it listed and then start the topic.
I'm hoping that with many ideas for topics to be started, everyone will be inspired to start more threads, and that, with more threads, we can have better quality discussions in the ED. In this manner, we will effectively be cleaning up the ED by inspiring true extended discussions. If trolls and spammers get to spam the ED with crap, as the Extended Discussion Coalition, we can spam the ED with good threads!
This will also personally help me, because while I'd like to start topics, I have trouble thinking about which ones to talk about.

Topics for Discussion!

  • The Number of Terms Congressman Should Stay in Office.
  • Censorship, good or bad?
    ~*~Video game censorhsip
~*~Censorship of female breasts and not male ones

  • Why are female breasts considered "obscene" while male breasts are not?
  • Death penalty/Eigth amendment
  • Homosexuality Mega-thread. (Linaloki)
  • Misconceptions of Christianity(Revamped). (Linaloki)
  • Political Correctness (Linaloki)
  • Importance of foresighted urban design. (Starlock)
  • America's growing reliance on the pharmaceutical industry. (BlueRoseTorn)
  • The autophilia of America.
  • Costs and benefits of truely free trade (As opposed to trade with resonable non-tariff barriers or trade with tariffs, subsidies, and unreasonable non-tariff barriers)
  • How strong patterns of sexual behavior arise as children, whose sexual behavior is usually pretty amporhous and undirected, become adults.
  • Hospitalization for the mentally ill should be a measure of last resort. (This thread should be based on the principles of liberty and the understanding that institutioalizing someone necessarily makes the task of reintegrating them into soceity very difficult, and suggests that treatment should involve lower doeses of medication, more medical supervision and lots more psychotherapy)
  • Whether torture is an acceptable act and what government policy about it should be.
  • Why is ignorance about sex and sexuality so rampant in the USA? What solutions are there to fix this problem?
  • The plausibility and implications of Solipsist beliefs or Solipsism in relationship to religious beliefs.

One topic that I had on my mind is the number of terms congressmen should stay in office. Since they are not limited like a president, they can prove to be problematic for the state they serve, due to this fact. Not sure what you’re looking for. I've never seen this topic in the ED before, so I thought this could be a new breath of air.

My topic idea: Censorship: Is it Good or Bad? What Should Be Done About It?

Does this seem like a plausible discussion topic?

Too broad, I think. Censorship of what specifically?

Too broad, I think. Censorship of what specifically?

What about video game censorship, a la Jack Thompson, Hillary Clinton, et al? Or perhaps the habit of television shows of not showing female breasts while they show plenty of male ones?

I propose a topic: discussion of why female breasts are considered "obscene" and male ones aren't, even when some of said males are sufficiently portly to possess actual breasts.

I mean, bras provide plenty of support, but some women don't need them. So why shouldn't A-cups be able to walk around with nothing covering their torsos? It would be a bit pointless to talk about why women can't wear just bras, in my opinion, since sport bras and bikini tops are socially acceptable (as are shirts that are practically bikini tops.)

I don't really have an opinion of this, but I think that would be an interesting topic to discuss for others. 3nodding

I've always wanted to run a topic on the importance of foresighted urban design but it isn't a topic that would get many responses. That's a problem I often have... many topics I'd like to create require a more specialized knowledge base or are topics that aren't "hot" topics to the general age demographic of Gaia Online. xp

The interesting thing with this issue is that, if the right people are up to it, there could be a very good discussion about various urban development strategies. I, for one, think that the next step for the city I live in is to build up like they've been starting to do a little, but it's slow and there's still a lot of building out. I'd participate in the discussion, but I'm no urban planner and only know a handful of cities, so my usefulness would be ultimately limited.

I have some essays I did for government class that could easily become topics of discussion... As they were meant to make discussion. They're on the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the death penalty/eigth amendment. They might hafta be tweaked a tad...

I'm also currently compiling 3 different threads for ED... sweatdrop A homosexuality megathread, much like the Abortion Debate, a thread called Misconceptions of Christianity or somesuch, a revamp of a CBed thread I made, and a thread on Political Correctness.

If anyone wants to help, it'd be appreciated. ^_^

I don't know much about the topic either, but I had an honors seminar in college that piqued my interest in it. I hadn't even really given thought to the vital importance of sound urban design until that class... and after it, I was just pissed off at the terrible lack of planning that goes into most American cities. It's our sprawl that's killing us in this energy crisis. Go to Europe and you have markets every few blocks... everyone walks, bikes, and uses mass transit. American cities aren't laid out for that, by and large. crying

I'd like to, eventually, create a topic about America's growing reliance on the pharmaceutical industry, mainly citing the essay "Medicate Your Dissent" by Carl Elliott. Discussion would ideally revolve around whether the attitude of "Feeling slightly down? THEN TAKE A PILL" was hurting, as opposed to helping, our society, in removing one of the basic feelings that (I believe) makes us human.

I really hate the autophilia of America. I don't ever use a car unless I have to (so I ride my bike everywhere, or use the train when I'm in a big enough city to have one.) If I don't have a bike or public transportation, well, I can always walk.

This would be another topic, and one with the potential for discussion wherein the autophiles and people like us discuss their views (and it could be an entirely peaceful and insightful one.)

As Chrono_Tata said, it is too broad. Censorship on a broad level has already been discussed before, and while I would personally like more unique topics, if we can suggest different kinds of censorship, then I'd add each different kind of censorship as a different topic to our list.

That could make a good discussion topic. I remember when Oni-Angel made a thread on it, but that was a while ago, so this is still a pretty new topic. If this topic was added, I think that it should have some research done maybe on sexuality and how female nipples even became more tabboo than male nipples in general. A point should be added that male nipples are also sexual, in that if they're rubbed, they can sexually excite a male just like how that would excite a female. Things like that would be important for the success of this topic.

I don't have anything to help you with your current threads, but if you could be a bit more specific on the threads about freedom of speech, and freedom of religion, I'd add those. I'll add the death penalty/eigth amendment.

I think that with a good OP, that topic could garner a lot of good opinions.
Show how this issue can relate to people and effect them.
Show them what they're missing out to like you've kinda been doing in this thread, like showing comparisons of other cities in other countries.
I think that the importance of foresighted urban design is a very good, new, and viable topic.
I'd also like to know what other types of topics you have in mind. I think that if the topic can go indepth, they can be very helpful to cleaning up the ED.

I would like to see a thread that discusses the costs and benefits of truly free trade, as opposed to trade with reasonable non-tariff barriers or trade with tariffs, subsidies, and unreasonable non-tariff barriers (which is what we have now).

I'd also like to see a thread that tries to dredge up whatever knowledge there is currently about how strong patterns of sexual behavior arise as children, whose sexual behavior is usually pretty amorphous and undirected, become adults.

I'd also like to see a thread that suggests that hospitalization for the mentally ill should be a measure of last resort, based on the principles of liberty and the understanding that institutionalizing someone necessarily makes the task of reintegrating them into society very difficult, and suggests that treatment should involve lower doses of medication, more medical supervision and lots more psychotherapy.

I'd like to see a thread that debates whether and when torture is an acceptable act and what government policy about it should be.

I'd like to see a thread that asks why ignorance about sex and sexuality is so rampant to the point that you could probably cure half the sexual disorder cases in the USA just by giving everyone a two-hour lecture on male and female anatomy and physiology - and then asks for reasonable solutions to fix this problem.

I can think of a lot of things I'd like to see.
