Where I'm at now we don't really have chair orders ... Just that seniority gets first parts ...

I'm kinda first chair alto sax. There's only two of us, and most of the time I get first part, 'cept my BD is nice and wants to give the other guy better parts sometimes so he doesn't feel left-out or something, so I sometimes get second. But I think mostly I get first.

Wow, that's lame... technically I'm second chair baritone out of three, but the other kid went back to trumpet in symphonic band, so now I'm pretty much first chair. biggrin

I'm the only bassoon in my band, does that count? I was first chair all the time in high school though, there were four my freshmen year, and two after that...

well last year in concert band, we had no baritones (but we had a song with a baritone solo)... at least this year there's two. But there should be more baritones in bands in general.

You'd probably be first if we actaully took a playing test, but think of how many ppl you're shaming by being so darn good ~.^ anyway I'm technically first chair for clarinets.. but I sit wherever I want 'cause our teacher doesn't really care... sad

yeah, we also only have two. it sucks, but atleast i always get the solos and first chair without having to tryout. then again, that is one of the more exciting parts of being in band. having to worry about whether or not you are better than someone else, but this year the other baritone sucks. in fact, he's pathetic, he was a percussionist and has no idea how to make a noise using a mouthpiece.

My band sucks too, cuz sections usually go by seniority.
So I play 4th trumpet in jazz band. Except I'm angry, cuz my BD placed a freshman on third along with a junior. And the third thats a junior is angry cuz it took him two years to be able to play third part. Our second trumpet (Who's also a junior) REALLY sucks. Like OMG sucks. And Our first is SO good that we could never have rehersal without him. He's been first trumpet since his freshman year.
But I can safely say I am first French Horn in my Wind Ensemble.
Out of two.
The other one is a senior.
But she can't hit the high notes, so I play first.
Because I can't hit the low notes.
