Figured I would get this thread started. I can never pick a favorite book or author because I have so many of them, so I'll just list the authors I have in my bookshelf.

David Eddings. I swear i love him as an authour but his latest series to come out is too much like every other series of his. He tends to stick to what he knows.

Raymond E. Feist. Another favorite. I haven't read anything of his I don't like. He's versatile with a very fertile imagination. I keep re-reading his books all the time smile

Traci Harding. Omg, this woman is brilliant. She overcame her dyslexia and proceded to publish a book a year for the last 9 years or so. She is a very esoteric writter and well researched.

Anne McCaffery. A moments silence for the passing of a great woman....... her books are comfortable to read and you can keep going back again and again, theres so many to choose from too.

Dan Brown. I love the mystery, the intrigue and of course I tend towards esoteric writters. Hated the movie though. Tom Hanks just wasn't good looking and charismatic enough to pull it off.

Anne Rice. Vampires, witches, horror, oh my lol. I really enjoy her books but she has a thing for guy on guy action that I find slightly disturbing - mainly because they sound so good looking and a loss to the female race blaugh

I have quite a few others but I guess they are my top 5 at the moment, of course this is subject to change at a moments notice. I'm a speed reader so its very hard to pace myself and I'm forever looking for new books to read. I keep the local second hand bookstore in business lol. I will read anything, including trashy romance *sigh* to the encyclopedia, especially if I'm out of books.

So what do you like?

Now THAT's a tough question. How to choose only a short list. What did you choose, top five? Okay, I'll try...

5 - Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series was really my introduction to the fantasy series, so I must say I like him a lot. I remember when I first read Wizard's First Rule, and how much I loved it. Richard's experiences as he learned about magic were so interesting, and the whole world created by Goodkind made me want to read on and on and learn more. My favourite characters in the series are Scarlet and Gar. Unfortunately as the series has continued, I have become frustrated with its repetition, preachiness and slow plots. Not as good as when it began, but I still have to give credit to Goodkind.

4 - One series I read three summers ago, and now I re-read every summer is the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. It sounds silly, but these novels are amazing, relaxing, summer candy reading. Ahhhh, at the cottage, in the sun on the dock, experiencing the trials and tribulations of being a teen girl. It's so fun. And nostalgic. I love it.

3 - My newest favourite has to be Dan Brown. I am going to read Deception Point next. I read Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code this summer. The adventures read like an action movie, the revelation of the clues is fun and Robert Langdon's character is so attractive. I agree with Silver, though. Tom Hanks just doesn't do him justice!

2 - I am totally becoming enthralled with youth fantasy literature lately, and I owe it all to J.K. Rowling. I waited a really long time to start reading the Harry Potter Series, since I thought I didn't want to get caught up in all the hype. Boy, was I mistaken! I read the first four books in a couple of weeks, and then preordered The Order of the Phoenix as soon as I could. Since I have begun reading the Potter books, I have also moved on to Cornelia Funke with Inkheart, and Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini. I love that youth fantasy literature is fairly easy to digest, but still contains interesting, creative, wonderful characters and fun ideas and adventures that I wish I could actually go on. Unfortunately I have to live vicariously through the characters.

1 - I have to say that my favourite author of all time is the dearly departed Timothy Findley. He is not at all in the fantasy category, although many of his novels have surreal elements to them. I began to read his novels in high school, but studied many throughout my degree in University. I became a true fan when I read Headhunter, which is huge, and I couldn't put it down until it was done. It was fantastic. I also love Not Wanted on the Voyage, Pilgrim and The Piano Man's Daughter. Findley's memoirs in From Stone Orchard and his biography (written by his partner, William Whitehead) Journeyman, are also so wonderful to read. Ahhhh, I love Tiff. My cat is even named after him, and I think he would approve, since he loved animals so much.

Ok, now I'm on a roll...other faves, without any commentary:
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Running in the Family, by Michael Ondaatje
Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie
The Five People you Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom
The Rowan series by Anne McCaffery
etc. etc. etc.
thanks for reading my extensive list!

Although not fantasy per say, My favorite book is the Divine comedy by Dante Alighieri and translated by John Ciardi. I have a perticular translation I like but I don't have it with me.

As for my favourite author, L.E. Modesitt Jr. is right at the top. He usually writes Sci-fi with political undertones but everyonce and a while He comes out with some stellar Fantasy series. The three best series I feel are The Corean Chronicles, which has the setting of a people with civil war technology but placed in medieval times and is all about war, Spellsong cycle, which is set in a place where woman dominate the world using magic that is encanted by song and is very art driven but is also about a rebellion if I recall using a woman as the main character, and The Saga of Recluse, which is about the history of a country in an alternate planet. It goes through wars, the building of the nation, to breakthroughs in technology and politics.

I also adore alternate history as well as actual history books like the Tao Te Jing by Lao Tsu, translated by johnathon star and Sun Tsu's the art of war.

I'm a huge fan of Timothy Zahn. He's a fantastic sci-fi writer, and is also pretty much the best writer for the Star Wars books too.

My favorites of his, The Icarus Hunt, Angelmass, The Green and the Grey(un-be-lievable!!!!), and I just finished Night Train to Rigel, and it was fantastic too!!
I recently read The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger, and that was hilarious.
I'm also a huge J.K. Rowling fan. biggrin
I like some of Sharon Shinn's books, specifically Summers at Castle Auburn and Wrapt in Crystal. Her angel books are pretty good too.
I love Jane Austen too...All of them.
I could go on for hours...I LOVE books!

My hubby has a suggestion for all of those who like Sci-Fi Fantasy - Shadow and Claw by Gene Wolf. It's part of a series that I found was recommended by Neil Gaiman, and my husband loves the Sandman books, so I got it for him to try. It's futuristic, but fantasy-ish too, and he loves it, so give it a try if you like those genres.

Kastalia_Elen, I love books too! I think The Devil Wears Prada is a fun one I should add onto my summer list this year. Thanks!

I would have to say I adore Anne McCaffrey. I love both the Dragonriders of Pern series and the Crystal Singer series. They are lovely reads on a rainy day with a nice cushy chair.

I am a huge fan of Agatha Christie and love all the mystery stories. It doesn't seem to matter which detective it is, I enjoy them all.

I also really like Dorothy L. Sayers with her Lord Peter Wimsey series.

John Mortimer with his Rumpole is one of my favorites as well.

If you enjoy time travel and alternate dimensions, there is nothing to beat Gordon R. Dickson and his Dragon and the George series.

If you want to combine science fiction and mystery, Isaac Asimov is great with his Caves of Steel series too!

I think I have too many favourites!

Dragonriders of Pern? I think I have one of those books... lemmie check

.
... I KNEW IT! I own Dragon Singer. I loved it but I have a big problem with reading a series any other way then from begining to end and so I never bothered to get past a few chapters. I Forgotten all about it. Thank you so much for reminding me! I'm gonna try my best to find the series again.

I was really looking foreward to John Lacarre (sp?) too.
