I don't remember having this issue with my first, but our daughter's umbilical cord dropped off a few days ago, and I've noticed some light bleeding. Has anybody else run across this? Is it something that needs checking out? I'm thinking I might call the midwife about it tomorrow (it's nighttime now), but I figured it was worth checking in here.

One of my children had that and it was nothing to worry about because it was just a little chaffing from where the diaper rubbed - that was bofore they had the ones for new babies with cords - but I always called when I was at all uncertain - If it is bright red or seems to be more than a spot or two I would worry, though.

Reference for others - I checked. A little umbilical bleeding is normal/okay after the cord falls off. The standard care rules apply: keep it dry, occasionally swab with alcohol, especially if it looks red. Only worry if the bleeding is fairly constant, doesn't stop after a week, or seems to be causing the baby distress (no, this does not include throwing a hissy fit because she dislikes cold alcohol swabs).

There will be plenty of other things to worry about and keep you up nights. Enjoy every moment of this miracle that you can!
