Verdad lounged in the last rays of the sun, tail twitching. Her body always wanted something to do. Always wanted to be moving and building but sometimes it had to submit to a nice nap. Red paws dangled absently over the rock as she yawned. Her newly developed fangs glistened in the sun at the soft lick over her lips. The sun had been bright but under the shade, she had escaped some of the mid-day heat with ease however, she couldn't beat the thirst that rattled in her throat.

With a groan, the cub launched herself from the rock. Dust billowed around her as she stretched. Her claws dug into the dirt as another yawn stretched her maw. She probably should have headed home but a quick drink couldn't hurt. Being a cub, and quite a stupid one a that, she didn't know where all the waterholes were in the area. Her tail flicked as she trotted along the darker parts of the Pridelands. She never been here before. The partched earth was nearly devoid of grass and seemed thick and black. Like a dried over tar pit. Ver looked down at the ground in wonder and fright before the glimmering of a waterhole caught her eye.

"Yay!"

Yakuti was angry to say the least. Perhaps angry wasn't really the word, confused was more like it. He was depressed, but he was also very persistant today with his patrols. He wanted more than anything to find a lion and kill it, he would impress Mafa, he would impress Shira, and he would feel a lot better, at least he hoped so.

The blue hyena had left Omoa at home this time, she was simply too tired to get up and walk around with him right now, and he was too irritated at his life to put up with her upbeat attitude.

He scowled and looked around at the pridelands, where many lions lived. What he wouldn't give to be able to go in there and kill them all, show them who the superior species was, but he couldn't... He wasn't strong enough to handle a grown lion on his own, though he hated to admit it. Today he strayed a bit closer to their borders than usual, and towards the end of his usual route, near the watering hole, he saw it. An young looking orange lion with strange markings near the watering hole, apparently about to get a drink. The blue hyena bounded over to her at his top speed, fangs bared and his blood boiling for a good fight. He stopped a few feet from her, snarling and snapping his jaws.

"Well hello, little lion. What are you doing so close to the graveyard, and so alone?" He sneered, beginning to circle his newest prey.

Verdad stopped in astonishment. For one thing, she had never seen a hyena before. She'd heard about them at random times from older lions of the pride but never seen one. Neither had she seen one bounding at full speed towards her. Green eyes widened and she jumped a few feet back. Her tail swept along the ground as she danced on her paws. She'd never been around anything vicious but there was something about the hyena that made her paws feel as if they were large blocks of stone.

At the snapping of jaws, she hissed crouched low. This was certainly something she didn't want. A soft sound left her maw as she kept her eyes on him. Still in shock, the cub's mouth opened in hope to talk but for the first time in her life, Verdad was absolutely speechless.

"I...I..." Her tail went limp behind her and her muscles cramped in terror as he circled her.

Yakuti cackled, he now understood why Mafa enjoyed tormenting lions so much. The feeling of absolute power was intoxicating. "What's wrong, kitty? Hyena got your tongue?" He barked at her, flashing his white fangs at her.

"What a tasty snack you'll be, oh yes. Little lion cubs are always scrumptious." He laughed, watching her every move, waiting for the best time to attack, to release all that anger inside him. "Or maybe I'll let you live, let you run home to mommy in terror and I will haunt your nightmares forever. Would you like that?" He asked with a malicious grin, moving slightly closer with each circle he walked around her.

"Fear while you sleep for years to come?"

Verdad shivered. So this was one of those infamous hyenas. The things that she had heard so much about. There was something malicious about them in her eyes. "I just...want to go home."

Her words almost mirrored his. If he did let her go home then she would never bother him again but if he didn't then she would be devoured by a less that civilized creature. Red paws clung to the black ground as she nodded. She wanted to go home. She wanted to nuzzle and sleep against her mother. Even a part of her wanted Matsai. She just wanted to get away.

"I wouldn't care. I just want to be home..."

Yakuti smirked once again as he came closer and closer to the little lion, "Well, too bad for you, I'm hungry and I'm angry. You're perfect to take my anger out on, not to mention that you're trespassing on hyena territory, and we can't have that now can we?" He asked sarcastically, laughing one of those infamous hyena laughs. He didn't care if they were technically still in the pridelands, in his mind, if he could see it from the graveyard, it was still the graveyard.

"So, little one, think you could take me? Because if you ever want to return home, you're going to have to." He snarled before suddenly lunging forward towards the young lion, jaws wide and ready to snap shut on anything they came in contact with.

Verdad shivered as he got closer and closer. His words made tears well in the corners of her eyes. What if he meant his words? What if she never went home? What if her goodbyes had been her last? Green eyes had a coating of tears thhat began running down her orange cheeks and dripping off her chin. Would they find her? Would her mother have to see her mangled and half-eaten?

"But these are the Pridelands. You're tresspass-"

Before the little cub could say more, he jumped. with a frightened and peircing scream, she found herself in a fight for her life. At a first glance, she was at a definate loss but with the hyena coming toward her, it was certain of her loss. Ver quickly turned on her paws to try and get away. If she could catch a demi-god then she would most likely outrun a hyena. Another loud scream sounded as blood ran slowly dripped steadly from a slight tear in her ear. Maybe it caught on a stray claw or even a tooth but that still didn't take the stinging pain away. Even the pain couldn't stop her from running and zig zagging even as blood began to drip freely. If she could just get a bit closer then someone would come to her rescue...hopefully.

Yakuti felt his jaws catch on the ear of the little lion, but it quickly moved away, leaving a few specks of blood in his mouth. Enraged at himself for not getting a hold of anything better, he raced after the cub.

This lion was fast... Faster than anyone her size should be, but Yakuti's legs were longer, perhaps he could catch her. Unlike the cub, Yakuti kept to a straight line, reducing how long he had to run and how much energy he spent. Even in his frenzy, he managed to keep his head a bit... It would take blood being drawn from himself to truly distract the blue hyena.

Yakuti knew that the time for words was long over, he was done playing with the lion. He ran after her and nearly caught up to her, his jaws partially open just in case he managed to catch her. The future of the young cub looked hopeless, but if another lion came or something happened to make Yakuti truely angry, her fate seemed sealed.

Red paws sdeem never to touch the ground as she ran. Ver didn't want to be eaten. The blood that had dripped to her muzzle startled her to the point that tears ran freely.. All this time she had been trying to hold them back but there was no restraining them now. The cub wished that this was a dream. That she would wake up next to her mother where she could cry and be held close afterwrds but this...was no nightmare. Or atleast, not one she could wake from.

She was at loss at what to do. If she kept running then there was a good chance that he could catch up but if she didn't then the last thing she would see would be his muzzle.

A quick glance back made her thoughts even foggier. He was so close. Her tail curled in on her flank as she tried to think. If she was to be killed then how would they know who did it. She needed to9 leave at least one thing behind. With grace that mirrored a sleek aduklt, Verdad turned, unsheathed her claws and swiped blindly at whatever part of him came to it first.

He was almost there, he was so close, and then something happened that he didn't expect. The cub turned around and attacked him! Surprised and in shock, the blue hyena howled angrily in pain and rage as her claws dug into the right side of his face, narrowly missing his eye. Blood flowed down his blue pelt and dripped silently onto the ground.

There was a moment of silence before the pain and anger had sunk in.

A red haze veiled his eyes and Yakuti lunged at the lion cub, forgetting all technique and strategy, he wanted now more than ever to tear the orange lion to shreds...

Verdad almost regretted her actions when her claws hit home. The feeling that she had actually hurt something ran through her mind as her claws went through him in agonizingly slow motion. The blood on her already red paws stained darker than her would ever hope to be no matter how hard it tried to let the deep red soak in. Her breath was hard and faltered from time to time. This new and odd feeling swept through her as she looked down at the blood. A feeling of guilt and anger went through her as well as digust and pain.

Was this what fighting felt like?...

The moment of silence. That calm before the storm gave her enough time to register everything around her though the slience even seemed to be screaming at her. With a harsh cry out, the orange cub started off again, hoping that she could still outrun him to her home.

Yakuti snapped his jaws, narrowly missing the lion as she ran off towards her home. He raced after her, in a wild bloodlust that drove him to be faster than ever before. But as is often the case in his rage, Yakuti became clumsy and lost his footing only a few steps from his prey, crashing to the ground and lying still for but a moment before he rose.

The hyena's head began to clear as he realized what a fool he was to let his anger get away with him, AGAIN. He panted heavily and started back home to nurse his wound, swearing that some day, some how, he would find the lion and take his revenge for an injury that would surely scar him for life, not only physically, but emotionally as well...

Verdad didn't stop running until she was in the shadow of Pride rock. The most devestating thing in her young life was supposedly over. Though she was out of danger, the orange cub fell to the ground, nearly sobbing from what had happened. She'd actually hurt something and not just any something, it was living and breathing. Greens eyes closed as paws covered them. Verdad hid, wallowing in her fright and pain in between the rocks until she would be ready to go home. The blood that still ran from her ear had sent dribbles down her cheek and neck. What would her mtoher say when she saw her? what would her borther say? She decided to stay nestled between those rocks until she felt better and could explain what happened without the world falling apart.

Needless to say, Verdad didn't go home for a long while...
