Alright. So at my school, we don't have chair placement which is sort of a downer. Just because you're a freshman you get all 3rd parts, and even though your better than the other flutes, they still give you third! its sort of unfair for me... because well... all the parts they have given me is not challenging at all. i mean c'mon, as you progress through the years your music gets harder; am i right?

That sounds like it sucks. I'm sorry. We split up into three levels during concert season. In marching band, I'll be a sophomore, so I'll probably be likely to get 1st part. Have you talked to your band director?

We have two bands and chairs, but sometimes the chair placement isn't fair. Just think would you rather pay your "third part dues" now and know that you will have first in a few years or risk being unfairly placed in a lower band or on a lower part as a senior?

We have chairs, but no chair tests x.x My sophomore year I got sent back one chair because the other girl was friends with the section leader. It was mildly unpleasant. We've yet to have a test this year too, and our section leader was supposed to graduate last year but didn't so...No first chair for me. mad

Heh, we don't have chair placement either.
Recently, our band director had to resign, so our assistant band director took his place.
He divides parts equally.
He later determines if that person can play the part or not. It depends on how much we practice our parts. We have to earn them.

We pretty much have two chair tests a year in the highest couple bands: one is band tryouts, the other is region band. But freshman aren't allowed in the top band, because we have a separate 9th grade center and they won't bus us over in the middle of the day. stare

Thank goodness I'm a sophomore now though... But we like never have third parts in our music, usually just first and second....

Ew, that really sucks. We always have our auditions. This year I only got second second because I screwed up, and I'm better then the people in front of me. Didn't help that I didn't have my good flute for the audition either.

well my band doesnt exactly have chair placments,so freshman get 2nd part. but now my teacher has herd us two freshman play and we should probably be moved up if we pass our addition to wind ensemble. cause the girl who does all the solos and who is the band directors favorite is not as good as my friends and im proabably better than her. but you its ok,we still sound good, even if our parts are to easy.

In the beginning of the year everyyear we usually have a all flute challenge and that usually tells our director where you sit and then also if you dont like the person thats infront of you as in you think your better You can challenge them and if you beat then you Can challenge the next person. So basically if you think your really good and you wanna be higher seated up .. you have to challenge.

that sucks. No chair place ment. I'm happy with the chair ideas. My only problem is that i'm in the freshmen class and i'm a sophmore. Yeah it sucks. Yeah i'm third chair, but thats because the two in front are supposed to be in the upperclassmen class. But i can't fit that class into my secdual, which sucks so i might have to take freshmen class for a while... BOO!

We don't have chair placement, either.
I was REALLY hoping to have my name at the top of the list, but my new band teacher (who I cannot stand) decided just to put things in alphabetical order.

I know how that is. I feel for ya. In my band, there are no chair tests, we don't challenge or anything, my director just picks on the basis of how well the student performs in private lessons (and I don't take from my band director, so . .)

A lot of bands and orchestras having something called a seating arrangement, where the best sits in the first seat, the second best in the second seat, and it goes along that way. The best is usually at the end on the your right side of the band when sitting down. Some bands don't have that though because the teacher might be too effing lazy or stupid to offer tests...

thanks..... my band arranges it differently...we have the first flutes (who play the first part) and the second flutes(who play the second part). and the firsts catfight over who gets the piccolo or solo. and the talent is evenly divided
