Imperial City of Apothos
Location:
The imperial city is located on the large fertile island of Beyon, which is isolated from the main continent of Gaia. Thousands of kilometers from the opening into the sea of Gambino. Two rivers border the city, to the east lies the great river Barmis, while only kilometers to the west of the city border is the river Tellmi.
Description:
Home to over three million, Apothos is the capital of the Beyon empire. From this city roads and rail line stretch in every direction across the island to a multitude of port towns that receive and carry goods to a variety of other islands and regions.
Central Manifest
The central manifest is contains the palace and the houses of the noble aristocracy. The palaces of the Imperial Aristocracy, the senate chamber, and the office of the Noble's Prefect stretches for half a kilometer in a narrow strip of circle until the palace is reached. Most of the estates here are sprawling mansions, home to the aristocracy and their slaves.
Defense- Around the central manifest is what appears to be a stone wall, but the stone is a mere facade, it is a two meter thick steel wall. Every ten meters the thickness of this wall increases by five meters on each side, as inside each of these squares are generators for an energy shield designed to protect the palace in the event of an attack. The system is an ancient technology, its power source coming from an order of mages kept in the Imperial house for millenia. These mages power the generators by casting their magics.
The Imperial Palace
The Imperial Palace is a massive ziggurat tower that has been standing for over three thousand years, the central radius of which stretches over a kilometer at the base. Upon entering the massive bronze gates, one is confronted by a dark main hall adorned columns shaped in the forms of the former Kings and emperors of Apothos. At the sides of the main hall are the passage ways that lead to various lower imperial offices, slaves quarters, even to internal stables or garages.
The basement of Apothos Tower is a massive prison and dungeon where the troublemakers in the city are kept. It is well guarded, by no means a pleasant place to stay. Each cell is a windowless room carved into the bedrock stone underneath the tower, the front reinforced by hardened steel bars. The bars and the stone are carved and printed with pretty designs, but they are not for viewing, they suppress magic and elemental power, making it deadly for the user. Each cell has a pile of straw and a potty bucket, though there is barely enough room to lay down.
In the center of this main way one would find themselves flanked by the quarters of the Imperial Order of Protective Mages. These mages, numbering in the thousands, are supposed to spend their days in constant meditation in prayer, thus preparing their spiritual powers to activate the defense system of the central manifest. Their quarters within the palace reflect their importance, and though they keep to the lower floor, their rooms are numerous and even posh in comparison with the slaves barracks in the lower sections. The Most High Mage keeps an office rivaling that of the Emperor himself. The head of this post often surpasses the authority of the Emperor, even though the mages are supposed to keep out of politics and never leave the central manifest.
The Imperial Senate itself is located in the center floor of the tower, the thousand senators of the empire conduct business and votes in this chamber, all of which are subject to the Veto of the king if the senate can not muster a majority of at least four-fifths. The large chamber has a theater like semi-circle of seats around the podium of the speaker. This chamber encompasses an entire floor of the tower, having a radius of just under a half kilometer. Both above and below are bureaucratic offices of the senate and the departments of the Imperial government.
The very top floor of the tower contains the king's palace, and his offices are directly below it. The kings palace is two story mansion built into the tower itself. Inside are a multitude of chambers and guest rooms. Everything the king could want or need is built into his palace. There is an olympic swimming pool, a fully staffed four star restauraunt for the king's purposes, several elegant bedchambers from which he may chose to sleep, each with a differing theme for his night time pleasure. There is a full movie theater and stage for his entertainment. A grand chapel of the Imperial religion is built into the palace so that the king may worship alone or with an entourage of his choosing.
Senari Prefect:
This is a crowded sector west of the central manifest. Here the shadow of the tower falls upon a crowded slum of poorly constructed clay and brick apartments. A great mass of poor migrants to the city live, many of which are too poor to feed themselves and rely on a dole of free grain. It is a flat land, separated into two sections by a the great Tellmi River. It is so poor that many inhabitants don't even have electricity or running water.
There is little merchant activity in the Senari prefect. The poverty and labyrinthine layout of the cheaply constructed dwellings lends itself to making this a base for the thieves who prowl the Denari district.
Denari Prefect:
South of the central manifest is the commercial heart of Apothos, yet it is strangely underdeveloped in comparison with other cities of Beyon. There are a few modern skyscrapers in the heart of this prefect, but nothing spectacular compared to the commercial hearts of other cities. Here can be found shops, malls, department stores, theaters, banks and other amenities of modern society. Some of the older buildings have been converted into expensive apartments, where merchants, military officers, and outer government bureaucrats reside. The streets here are fairly wide, made of asphalt as opposed to the flattened dirt roads that dominate the Senari Prefect. This prefect also contains several museums and libraries, and is known as the center of Delfos culture.
The train station is located in this district, it is a grand old temple like structure with a massive lobby. The station itself is surrounded by the shops and stores of the merchant district.
Quintilius Prefect:
In this prefect is located the office of taxation, a thick ten story building where the tax collection efforts of the empire are coordinated. There is a residential district of humble brick and stone homes for the bureaucrats and accountants who work for the empire in assessing the taxation of every citizen in every province of the empire.
The King Veritax airport, a multiple terminal airport with twenty one runways, can be found in this sector of the city.
The capitol garrison of the Imperial Military is based here. The uniform military apartments for the soldiers taking up a considerable portion of the prefect's land.
Except for the central manifest, the city is unwalled. However, the capital garrison consists of ten thousand of the empire's most highly trained defensive soldiers. There are multiple posts and defensive positions surrounding as area up to ten kilometers from the frontier of the city. These positions can theoretically be fully manned and equipped within ten minutes.
