I'm sick of hearing rap, even if no one is playing it. Why can't techno be popular? rap is disgusting. Here are some artists that sing dancemixes:
Sylver
Lasgo
Candee Jay
Alice Deejay
Ian Van Dahl
DHT
DT8
Kate Ryan
Cascada

I'm no expert on a matter... but I've always thought trance to have that echoey melodic vocals while techno has a generally faster beat. Meh. Eitherway, beyond raves and such, I don't listen to that stuff.

I agree with that. But once you figure out the difference between techno, trance, and dance mix-ups, what about mash-ups and electronica?

I mostly listen to Tune Up, Daft Punk, DJ Rozz, Darude, and Jem

This is part of an essay jopwie wrote

Electronic Dance Music, or EDM, is the most unique and diverse style of music, attracting the most eclectic and interesting fans. Although electronic music has been around since the late 1960's, EDM has only been around since the mid 1980's. It all started in Detroit, where three men created the style of music we now call Techno. Since then, many other types of EDM have been created, such as House, Trance, Hardcore, and Trip Hop. All are similar yet distinctive, their one common factor being that each is produced electronically, with the intention of making people dance.

One of the many misconceptions in today's society is that all electronic music is called Techno. Perhaps this is because the mis-users of the term are shortening the term "technologically created music", but on the other hand it could just be a lack of understanding of EDM itself.

Each type of EDM is as unique as the city in which it was created. Gabber, for example, was created in the early 1990's in the post-industrial city of Rotterdam, in Holland. It's obvious the local culture had great influence on the style, which is more industrial and rough around the edges.

Techno was created in the mid 1980's, in the city of Detroit. The three men responsible for its creation, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, are often referred to as the "Founding Fathers" or "Holy Trinity". Although Techno is often categorized as music for Caucasians, the Founding Fathers were of African descent, as were many other influential Djs and producers in the early development of Techno. Heavily percussive and synthetic, Techno has a beat per minute (BPM) range of 130-140, and a 4/4 beat..

House music owes its origins to Frankie Knuckles. In the Chicago Warehouse Club, Knuckles would mix "old school classics and eurosynth pop" (http://www.wikipedia.org). House music quickly made its way overseas to the United Kingdom. The infamous Hacienda nightclub in Manchester was famous for its resident House DJs. In fact, a movie was even produced, telling the tale of the legendary days of the Hacienda and how the early scene developed.

Having a 4/4 beat and a solid bassline, House is one of the most popular forms of EDM for dancing. Break dancers have taken a strong liking to House, with its strong beat and often funky lyrics, break dancers love the creativity of this music as it inspires them to develop their style of dancing.

One of the most peaceful yet uplifting forms of EDM, Trance has become more mainstream than any other genre of EDM. Trance can best be described as mellifluous, which is defined by the Canadian Oxford Dictionary as "pleasing, musical, flowing". Trance is famous for its repetitive, harmonious beats. With 4/4 beat and a BPM range of 130-150, Trance also has a great deal of quarter note drum patterns.

Goa & Psychedelic Trance are the most popular subgenre, and they are famous for their Middle-Eastern origin and sound. Large outdoor Goa/Psy festivals are held all around the world, where thousands of fans come together in the wilderness for a weekend of unity and spiritual growth.

Hardcore is a rather broad term. It describes music with a BPM of 160-300, a pounding bassline, and often crude, angry lyrics. The earliest form of hardcore, Gabber - as mentioned previously- was created in the city of Rotterdam in Holland. Characterized by its fast, crazy beats, gabber is everything from experimental to silly.

While hardcore is its own genre, with subgenres such as Gabber, Speedcore, UK Hardcore, and Terrorcore, it has become a subgenre of other forms of EDM as well. Hardcore Trance and Hardcore Jungle are just two examples, where the format of the original genre is intact, but with a faster and stronger beat.

The most popular form of hardcore among ravers is Happy Hardcore, or UK Hardcore. Upbeat and fast paced, Happy Hardcore often has child-like vocals, and sugary lyrics. Evidence of Happy Hardcore's popularity can be seen at raves, where fans, called "Kandi Kids", dress as if they were pre-schoolers, carry soothers, and wear massive amounts of colourful beaded jewelery.

Formerly called "The Bristol Sound", Trip Hop is a form of Downtempo EDM. The term Trip Hop was first used by the magazine Mixmag, to describe the unique music being produced by artists out of Bristol, England. Credit for the creation of Trip Hop goes to the early Bristol pioneers. Massive Attack fused hip hop and jazz to create their first album, "Blue Lines", in 1991. Trip Hop stands apart from all other EDM with its dark, moody vocals (often female), and urban sound.

Since its inception, Trip Hop has made its way into mainstream culture, through movie and television soundtracks, and even television commercials. The hit TV series "House" uses Massive Attack's elegant "Teardrop" as its theme, and the Canadian television series "La Femme Nikita" featured Trip Hop in nearly all of its episodes.

The Trip Hop culture is a relaxed one. Instead of being played at raves or in clubs, trip hop can be heard in lounges, cafes, and most often in houses where friends have come together to appreciate the ambiance trip hop creates.
