A lazy snooze was a luxury the bay Reya normally did not allot himself, for his training was much too important to skip by taking a nap. Having just completely redone his obstacle course, however, he decided it best to allow himself a nice break. The last thing he needed was to strain his muscles beyond repair, for that would give him the sad fate of never climbing that powerful mountain to the north.

The young stallion was always a light sleeper, but today he was slightly deeper within the slumber he had fallen into. Only a very near noise would snap him out, and there was a hope that no such event would occur. His body was quite sore from pushing around boulders and logs, and August couldn't promise he'd stay awake for long if he was to be disturbed. With a snore, he twitched lightly, dreaming of the snow and ice that was to be his future. It was always on his mind, almost an obbsession, something he could never escape. With a last twitch, flicked a tail and smiled at the wonderful visionary snow that danced in his mind's eye.

The pale Nequus stepped cautiously out from the kindly shade of the trees and set out along the edges of his forest home in search of food. Late afternoon and winter on top of that though it was his skin still itched at the first touch of the rays. Pale hooves carried him slowly along and the blue-eyed Reya bent every so often to nibble at the poor winter grass. He was skinny from little feeding, his pale hide scruffy with the season and his vision as blurred as ever.

Not for the first time, the albino stallion cussed as a hoof found a fallen branch and nearly sent him tumbling over.

Morthan recovered his balance, flushed with embarrassment despite the fact that he was alone.

Or so he believed.

August sitrred slightly in his slumber at the sound of a muttered cuss. He lazily blinked, staring through bleary eyes about him. Slowly, he lifted his bay head, shaking of the sleep he had just been so comfortabley wrapped in. His eyes shot about, looking for the source of the sound. It must've been close for it to wake him from such deep a nap, yet there was no one to be found. Confused, August stumbled to his feet, shaking out his tail and unfolding his wings for a good stretch. A yawn took over his features, as his hind legs took turns straightening out. As he went through the motions of a waking creature, he caught sight of a stallion in the corner of his eye. Honestly shocked, he whipped his head with more speed than he had truely wanted to do towards the snow white Reya that stood only paces away, looking flushed and annoyed. It wasn't often that any Nequus, most especially a male, stumbled along this part of the forest, and August couldn't help but ask. "Er... 'Scuse me sir, but... Who are you?"

Morthan wheeled around at the voice, his muscles tensing instinctively... but the voice didn't sound too threatening; good, a fight was the last thing he needed. The albino peered at the voice’s owner. Brown and a Reya like him, he thought. Too slim for Aeri and he thought that was a horn he could make out on the other Nequus’ brow.

"Morthan," he said somewhat shortly, annoyed at himself for having been caught so utterly off guard by one who had probably witnessed his stumble. "I've lived in these woods a number of years but I don't come to this part often," he went on. "Only here because the stream I usually drink from's frozen up."

Pale blue orbs ran the other Nequus over again and the albino tried not to let the other know that he was little more than a blur to those defective eyes. "Who are you then?" he asked when he had finished his supposed appraisal.

That stallion must blend right in with the snow, he mused lightly. Where as he, on the other hand, stuck out like an awfully sore thumb. An envious look flashed in his eyes, but only for a small moment. His young ego was far too large to be beaten by a Nequus that lacked pigment entirely. "I am August, and I am always here. My tree is off in that direction." The Reya tilted his horn towards the west, where, surrounded by few other pines, a large tree stood with absolute pride. The plant reflected the equine quite well, actually, for it's bark and leafves were unusually dark, and it's twisted branches reached out as if to say, 'I'm here and I'm better than these pines.' After a thought, August added, "This is going to be my territory when I have a herdling of my own." A herdling, at least to that particular specimen, was a fledling herd, or a single family. This was the post where he intended to raise his own young some day.

He had to admit that, although he did have a respect issue, the idea of an older Reya nearby was quite comforting. Perhaps when he aged some and matured, the pair would have gentlmenly talks that only sires can truely understand, standing by the brook and gaurding their offpsring. It was a fantasy, but it could happen, right?

Morthan nodded in acknowledgement of the other Nequus' name and words. "I see, August... Well, we haven't run across each other before so I suppose this area that you plan to claim can't overlap much with my territory, which is good. I don't like disputes." Especially not with anyone who looks and sounds as young, brash and hearty as you do.

There again, it might be a good thing to make friends with this young stallion rather than to avoid him as much as possible. If anyone else tried to muscle in on the area it would be good to have an ally to help him beat them off.

Morthan found his pale eyes drawn to the tree that August had indicated and he couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy at the sight. So tall, so strong. His own tree was as white as his coat and nowhere near as healthy looking as the lush pine that this other Reya had originated from.

"I am glad to meet you, August," the albino said, drawing his gaze away from the mighty tree. "I don't see other Nequus often since my foals left to make their own lives in other places."

It had been a wrench to see them go, especially his youngest daughter. He had to admit that the stallion she had chosen in the end was worthy of her but... well, it hadn't been easy to say goodbye to those golden eyes. The worst of it had been the worry in her warm gaze.

She hadn't seemed to think that he could take care of himself.

Morthan sighed and made an effort to shake himself from melancholy. Making a reasonable first impression was important, he didn't want the brown stallion opposite him to think that he was perpetually surly or miserable.

The younger stallion's eyes, too, took a short break from words to gaze at his tree. It was a mighty being, that was for certain, and it made the Nequus swell with some odd pride that he had come from such a thing. Turning quickly back to the albino, however, he lost the glint in his eye and went straight to business, as was the male to male way. "My territory is not really that large..." It was a slightly embarrassing thing to admit, but a truth none the less. His time had been spent mostly on training and building the obstical course off to the east of his land, and not on the usual new stallion thing of expanding borders. Though it was a meager location, he had come to love it, and it was large enough for a mate and a foal or two.

"I am glad to have met you, as well. I admit I've become a sort of recluse since I lost colthood innocense. I've spent much of my time training to climb the mighty Casa Tiner." At the mention of children, August instinctively adopted a slighter frame, offering a small subbmission. They were on his turf, and he would never completely loose dominance in his own domain, but there was respect to be given to a creature that had seen more and lived more than he, and had already contributed his genes to the world.

Morthan turned his eyes towards the huge mountain and squinted at its bulk. "An interesting ambition," he smiled as he turned back to August. "And I don't think my territory is huge either to be honest; I don't need it to be. A place to call home, enough water to drink and access to common ground for grazing is all I need now that's I'm by myself.”

The pale Nequus smiled slightly as he took a short trip down memory lane. “I kept quite a large area when the foals were young to give them a safe place to play in but I've only kept the heart of my home guarded of late. Doesn’t seem worth the bother without a mate and such to keep. Maybe I’ll bother again if I ever mate again but I’ll be sure to extend my domain in the opposite direction to this," he said to August, his slight smile becoming a grin.

"And if I ever expand, I will go the opposite way of you." He nodded kindly, knowing full well it was not only respect that brought forth such a statement. Logically, battling the older albino would not be easy. They were both fine specimens of their species, each with advantages the other did not posess. It would be far better interest wise for the pair to remain indifferent to eachother, or in the best case scenario, allies. Such an arrangement could very well give them the upper hand in an oncomming attacker. "If I can ever trick a mare to fall for me, of course." The young stallion laughed at that, knowing that some day he would indeed coax a mate to him. When such an event would occurr, however, was anybody's guess, and it would probablly happen after his great climb of the mighty Casa Tiner.

August remained silent for a moment after his laughing spell had subsided, and finally ventured on quizzing Morthan. "So. Do you have any... personal goals you're after? Quests? My own is that mountain to the northeast."
PostPosted: Wed Dec 20, 2006 3:59 pm

Morthan paused thoughtfully, his gaze wondering to the mountain once more. Did he have any ambitions? Did he have any purpose in life? Why did he even bother walking to look for food every day when the sun hurt him and the night crippled him? Wouldn't it be better all round if he just lay down and died? Much less effort and no great loss to the world at large.

Wow, there's some positive thinking I’ve got right there, the white stallion berated himself silently.

"I think... I'd like to travel a bit," he said after a while. "I've lived here most all of my life, I think I'd like to see other places, meet more people and such."

Yes, that was a nice ambition. He'd probably never pluck up the courage to leave his safe, shady home but it was good to dream even if such fantasies came to nothing.

As August was not a waise and intuitive creature, he hardley noticed a pessimistic air oozing from the albino he conversated with. Much instead, he grasped at the idea of travelling, and let it take off with young wings in his mind. Perhaps he would do that some day, as well? After he settled down and had a family, of course, and after said family was grown and away.. Perhaps, if he really had someone special, he could take her with him? It was in the nature of the males of the Reyan race to grow attatched to their mates, so it would not be all together off the wall to bring one along with him. Not up the great Casa Tiner, of course. That was for him and him alone. But perhaps... a beach. The ocean sounded lovely, after all. It might be a nice place to go to when he was older. Older than Morthan, even, older than everyone he knew. When his life was comming to a close and he had not else to do but to enjoy his last days on the earth, perhaps he would go see the ocean, and let the great beastley water take him.

"That's a nice idea, I say. I might even do that." He nodded vigourousley, breaking free of his deep, thoughtful revere. "Morthan, do you think you'll ever have any other foals?" His question was not entirely conversationary, of course, as it had motives behind it. It was a custom in old lines to arrange mates for children, and though he may not follow to the tradition, it was always nice to know where other Reya children played.

Morthan frowned thoughtfully at the younger male's question. It would be nice to take a mate again, to have company day and night, someone to lead him when he was blind and much though his foals had annoyed him at times he had loved them dearly too. It was lonely without them and his mate, cold, desolate. What was the point in life if one had nobody to share it with?

"...Yes," he said after a while. "I hope so anyway, it would be nice to have a mate and children again."

His family had always given him a purpose. Hopeless thoughts such as the ones he had entertained a moment ago, which had dogged him throughout his life, had evaporated like a morning mist when he'd had family to love and protect.

Perhaps it was more the purpose than the family that mattered, he mused silently. If I can't find myself a mate again, perhaps I could find myself a purpose of a different sort, one like August has with that bloody mountain.

The younger stallion stood respectfully still and silent as the older of the pair mused and spoke, but his mind was reeling. It was not often that he thought of future family and finding a mate, as a good portion of his waking hours were spent on training. The other few hours were spent on eating, drinking, and staring listfully at Casa Tiner from his pine tree haven. Now, with the talk of mates and foals brought up, his mind had been thrown into a pit of endless possibilities. It was more likely than not he would settle down with a Jala, even though having a Reyan mare around would lighten his spirits. As was the way with his kind, however, he knew no matter if she were feathered or bat winged, he would grow dearly devoted to her.

Snapping from his revere, he nodded, as he had done at least twice in this conversation already. "It would be nice, yes. Perhaps our future children may play by this stream, if it wraps down to your territory as well?"
PostPosted: Tue Dec 26, 2006 2:58 pm

Morthan smiled tentatively at the other Reya's suggestion. "I think they are, though it's possible that they're two different tributaries from the mountains that flow into a bigger river somewhere downstream. Anyway. Whatever the case I'd like that, foals should have more playmates than just siblings after all."

Pale blue eyes scanned the surrounding area thoughtfully. Yes. He and August would stand here and talk together, watch the foals play and speculate what their mates were whispering over this time. If August took a mate before he achieved his ambition to climb the icy mountains then he would look after all the foals and both the mares, if they needed it, until his return.

It would be good to make more than an acquaintance of this young stallion, very good indeed. Even if neither of them ended up mating, the other Reya would be the company he had so missed recently.

It seemed, at least to August, that there was a blossoming alliance growing between the two stallions. And why shouldn't there be? They seemed to get along pretty well, what with Morthan being the pleasent creature that he was and August being polite with those who had seen more in life than he. They were also neighbors, practically. Though there might be a bit of free space between their territories, the other stallion was closer to him than any other Nequus he had come across. And, of course, they were both Reyan. A bond between all those of the same species often formed, for pride of their blood.

An urge of friendship came over him, as we realized quite dimly, that he really had no true friends. There were childhood chums, of course, but contact with those few had long fallen out as he had thrown himself into training. With that urge of friendship came an urge of trust, and in order to trust, he had to know more. "So, Morthan... What do you do all day long?"
