Yep, I have always wanted to try rune casting, always been fascinated with them since I first learned about them, and I made my own. blaugh I'm really happy with them and even tried casting them once or twice. It seemed pretty acurate and I want to study it more and get an interpretation book. I have the book that first introduced runes to me, it has the runes and a basic meaning list. But I want a more complex book, hopefully for christmas I will get it.. Keheheh whee ANYWAY. I made mine from the small river stones I picked out myself, and painted the runes onto the rocks. I keep them in a little sachet on my shelf dedicated to witchcraft in my closet and am very proud of them! So there's my story, just wanted to tell the world about it for a little, if you guys have any interpretation book suggestions, please share! Thankee ^ ^

Amusingly, while I too have made my own set (and will probably make a different one since I'm not sure I like the one I have) I don't have a good interpretation guide or at least not one from a source I know I can trust. I found a few good ones online a while back but I do not know how truthful they are. I can't remember where exactly I found them as it was a long time ago I last looked around.

Runes aren't a spell, they're typically used as a form of divination. You can also use runic scripts in spellwork though.

You could use them as a chant. What I'm most familiar with is taking some natural material and marking the runes on them, putting them in a black velvet back and then drawing them out ot use for divination. You can usually find cheap rune sets in your local Borders or B&N.

Lemme think. According to Rage, Nigel Pennick has a book that is fifty fifty. I have one by Edred Thoursson which is pretty good, I think he has a few published. www.sunnyway.com is also worth a look.

The runes themselves are just a communication method with the gods (they were revealed to odin and so on) and are used for spells, divination and so on. Gladr is a form of spoken runecasting (in terms of spells) though I know very little about it... Its definitely a good idea to know your lore, it adds to your understanding rather than just reading modern interpretations

Do you favor any Furthark in particular?

Nodds. Other good authors is Jan Fries, Diana Paxton and Jenny Blain.

Edred Thorsson also writes under his real name, Stephen Flowers.

There are many methods of using runes in rune craft, oral and divinitory methods.

While new age sources throw them out as being little more than tarot...They also tend to give very shallow representation of its meanings and interpretations.
Heathens (such as myself) use them spiritually and hold a significance to our relationship to deity. As divinitory pieces, they are a way to communicate with deity, the Norns and self reflection.

They are also used to form bind-runes, a type of Runic charm created by combineing runes together toward a specific intent.
Traditionally, these are then 'activated' by staining the bind with the user's blood.

One Text that speaks a length about using the Runes is the Havamal.

Just to be to the point... It has nothing to do with Wicca, Druids, or the like.
Some use them, but out of context.
