Basically an altar is any flat surface that is used ONLY for your own magickal practices. It reflects who you are and can have many things displayed on it like altar cloths, a burning candle, insense, a pentagram, a picture, earth/rocks/sand/seeds that represent the elements as well as water, your athayme and so much more.
Your 'kitchen' cabinet is whereyou store all your magickal supplies in one handy space so that you may find it easily. This doesn't always have to be a cabinet it cold be a chest, a dresser, a desk, or even a closet! These things can contain many things including: Athayme candles insense herbs seeds rocks earth crystals stones tarot decks magickal reference books and documents a yearly almanac calendars wax and wicks (if you make your own candles) amulets ribbons
and many other things. what I am asking is that you add to these that I have listed by telling us what is in your 'kitchen' cabinet and up your magickal sleeve!

I happen to have a shoe box that is my "kitchen cabinet" It seems small on the outside but it still wholes all my supplies. Sits on my desk right behind my laptop and no one bothers it. wink
3 Wicca books 1 BOS 8 Candles 2 wooden bowls 4 special pens for writing in the BOS 2 speical pencils Bag of feeling stones And a can of incense sticks
And yes it all fits with only a slight lift of the lid if I pack it wrong, and no I didn't do any spells or decorating of the box and yes theres still more room in it for a couple of odd things to go in. It's not even from a pair of shoes I bought, it was the roomies! whee

Well, I guess my whole house is my kitchen cabinet. lol Anyway
three bookcases of religion, philosphy, divination & spellbooks a couple bookcases of cultural & history studies a few hundred stones various oils, tintures & herbs various craft items (ribbon, yarn, paints, candle making supplies, ad infinium) one tarot deck for use & eight others for meditation, study & comparison a handmade witchboard, made by my old group various ritual items (various wands, staves, swords, chalices, ect) drums (african)
I am living my dream life to the fullest. Now if I could just get a couple hundred acres out in the mountains, with some caves & a swamp off to one side.

WOW> I would love to see what your altar looks like, let alone some of the interesting items on there! Is that even possible? Oh my goddess! It must be an entire room (unless you decorated your whole house as such). Thta must have been thousands upn thousands of dollars! I just was going to say that I added a picture that I had drawn of the goddess interpretation I made and I am sharing my altar with a few friends and continuing forward with my divination techniques with tarot readings and I'm getting good at it with a starter deck (meanings written right on the card). I'm poor. ( crying )

I have to completely disagree. An altar never has to be an exclusive surface. Many people do not have the space to be able to do that. I think what is key about the altar is what you make of it at the time of its use! If the altar surface is prepared properly (ie cleansed of interfering energies and set up with what you need), then anything can be your altar.
Some people keep an altar cloth around because the cloth itself is their "portable altar" and is ready to be put on any flat surface.
So to have this as an absolute is just not something I can agree with. Absolutes in magic are what cause downfalls and disagreements. Openness is key to understanding and peace between thought paths.

I have more than one altar/shrine types around my home. I have a personal altar in my bedroom, a "public" one in the main living room, a small water shrine in the bathroom, and a small "welcome to my home" altar type in the entry hall as people come into the home. Even my children have a small one in each of thier rooms.
I change mine so often.. it follows the seasons and even the cloths (when I have a cloth... I don't always have one LOL) change according to the seasons.
Here is a few items I have on some of my altars:
Shells from my friend in Hawaii A small bonsai oak tree A small statuette of a black cat (for my little furbaby) 3 dragon statuettes (1 male, 1 female, and 1 baby breaking out of a shell) Feathers from various birds (including an ostrich from African Lion Safari smile ) Various knives and tols (includes a handmade sickle from a dear friend) A black beeswax lined drinking horn (made by the same friend above) A handmade incense burner I made and the insence for it (also made by me) small candles, stones, various oils...
There are so many more things that i interchange one each but it would be a very, very long list LOL!

I lost most everything I had...including most of my books when I got robbed and then had to leave Texas. My boyfriend paid to ship some of my stuff up....but he told me what to ship...and we both decided that my books could be replaced....as well as most of my supplies....because it would be cheaper to replace them than to ship them. So....I don't have an altar right now....or most of my supplies....but in time I'll get it back together. I can't even really have an altar until we aren't living with his parents anymore...

That is sad. I did lose a lot of things due to a terrible roomate. I went to visit my grandmother and in the weekend i was there the roomate took everything I owned and left... I came back to an almost empty apartment! Sadly I never got anything back! I was not too worried about most of the items, the thing i was most upset at losing was all my photos and similar "irreplaceable" items.

Is There Anything that could be placed on your alter during a sabbat (for example Samhain is coming up quick) I'm preparing my alter, is there anyting special I should do for it?
And you put a picture in the alter list, is this just a picture of whatever you wish or of a person/yourself. -asks lots of questions xd - but i guess it's better to ask then not know!

I have a bookshelf which is also an alter. I also have a seperate alter which I have placed my herbs that I drying, my dragon statues, and my mortar and pestle (My little Herbal station, if you will. n___n)
My bookshelf has an alter on top, and underneath there are 4 Books on wicca, 2 on Tarot, 1 on Spices, 1 on Ghosts and unexplained spirits, and 1 Magickal Calender (a Spell-A-Day one). In the shelf to the left, I have a bag that used to belong to my g-ma in which I hold herbal remidies once mixed and charged. I also have four glass candle holders. on the shelf to the right, I have herbs and other ritual ingredients. Underneath I have a box containing at least one of every color candle I can find, Which is a lot! they're all taper but I have to large candles as well. :]
Both my alters contain these in the appropriate places. Salt-Earth, Inscense-Air, a white or red candle-Fire, and a chalice of water. On my "herbal station" I have already explained what I have. On my bookshelf alter, I have my BoS, another dragon stature (which I may move to my other alter when I find a fae statue) my Tarot deck, Yes/No stones, and the wand that I made.
