Well, I welcome you to my lovely log of all things horsey. I hope that I'm not too boring to read about for most of the time nothing really exciting goes on unless I'm out of town or something. Well, I hope you enjoy this and comments are welcome and loved. whee

Entry#1: Tom's place-Saturday, 12/16/06

Well, my mother and I hauled Whiz and Player about 5 hours from here in Vegas to the outside of Simi Valley, CA. We were going to leave on Sunday since that was our day off, but there were high chances of snow in the mountain passes so our boss and we don't have our 4 wheel drive dodge anymore or chains. Grant, was nice enough to let us leave early that day and we would feed in the afternoon on Sunday instead of this evening. He's such a great boss.

It was pretty cloudy outside with light winds for most of the trip--no snow, except at the very top of the mountains. We hit rain in Pasadena as well as heavy traffic, but we have already hit traffic off and on beginning in Victorville. Blah, the traffic there is almost as bad as it is here...or worse. It's really pretty in California once you get to the San Bernardino Mountains. I see why Tom liked it so much. Its so much prettier there than in the ugly Mojave Desert that I live in. We arrived in Simi Valley around 2-ish, but and found Tom's about half an hour later. It was hidden in a between two small mountains, kind of like a little valley. The weather was starting to clear up and we had a little bit of sunlight, still had some winds.

Tom's new place is still under construction, but it's going to be so awesome when it's done. Right now, the main, 14 horse show barn, a mile long racetrack, a round pen and some pipe corrals were completed. The slide track (a large arena without side panels) that was going to be in the middle of the racetrack is set to be complete by the end of this week. There will be an indoor arena built, but it is not scheduled to start until this spring after the rains let up. The show-barn will have two small apartments for the assistants and two really big tack rooms, and wash racks. There will be a mare motel built as well.

When we arrived, we met Tom's wife, Kirstin, who will run the breeding operation--they stand two stallions, Guinness and Cattitude. She was tacking up a red roan gelding that she has ridden and shown. When we pulled up and she quickly finished saddling him and went to get Tom. Tom was working a buckskin mare in the round pen and was almost done lunging her. He had an assistant finish lunging her while he went to go look at Whiz and Player and talked to us.

He's a really nice guy. You can really tell he enjoys what he does. He had an assistant saddle up Whiz and I saddled Player since I brought my saddle just in case he wanted me to ride--which he did. I lunged Player in the round pen; he was feeling quite fresh and still was even after I lunged him. Then I brought him down to the racetrack so the assistant could lunge Whiz. There, Kirstin and a girl about my age, Rebecca, were loping around the track and Tom was spinning the mare he was lunging earlier. He asked me a few questions about Player and said he was going to watch me ride. I was really nervous and Player could sense I was so he wanted to spook at everything--especially Tom's little boy, Dane. Player was like "Omg! It's a midget! *snooooorrrrrtttt*" Finally I was loping him around and he was being really heavy on the front end and wanted to drop his shoulder and drift left really bad on the right lead. It was like watching a drunken horse and rider. We were everywhere and trying to avoid Kirstin and Rebecca, and now Whiz since the assistant was warming him up. Whiz was being so much better behaved that Player.

Finally Tom told me not to worry about his frame anymore and just gallop around the track until he came back to Planet Earth. 3 laps and 2 crowhops later (every time he loped by Tom) later he stopped looking for things to spook at and was listening...also tired. Tom was now on Whiz and working on his spins since Lior got Whiz really confused. When Whiz started to do better, he stopped and asked me to do a few lead changes. Player wasn't very willing and finally did a decent lead change on the 3rd try. I sat there a few minutes and let Player catch his breath while watching Tom lope around on Whiz doing flawless lead-changes. Every time he did a good one he either pats him on his rump or scratched his neck. Then he asked me to spin Player. Player's been really forward in his spins instead of rocking back and Tom showed me on Whiz what he does to fix that. I spun him again--this time with Tom telling me what to do and where to fix him.

It was so nice how he never yelled and got impatient. He stayed calm and never harshly criticized me or Player or Whiz. He told me I had a nice seat, but I needed to look up more and work on a few other things. He treated me kindly and even joked a little bit. When we were done, he made Rebecca introduce herself to me and we talked a little bit. Rebecca was his only other youth since his other one, graduated and is at college. He was teasing her and told us we should exchange phone numbers. He's a pushy guy, but it a good way. He wants me out back out again to ride Whiz when Rebecca is out on Winter break as well so we could socialize and become buddies. He said that Whiz would be the better one out of the two, and I needed something to ride at home (plus we couldn't afford to keep both in training). So, we kept Whiz at Tom's and Player was coming back home with us, which I was glad in a way. I love my Player. <3 He said that whenever we come up there we could bring Player and he could help me with him a little bit.

He introduced us to all the horses at the barn and man; there are some really nice horses there. He has 11 horses coming on 2 and 7 horses coming on 3. Then about 5 derby horses and quite a few nonpro horses. It's a good thing he has 3 assistants. When we were getting ready to leave, it started raining again and it was around five. Since we hit snow and traffic in certain areas, we had to drive slower, so it took us about 6 hours to get home. I can't wait to go back up there in a couple weeks. It was an exhausting trip, but a well worth one.

Holy crap that was a long entry. Sorry if there are any confusing or weird grammar. I'm too lazy to read over it right now. xD
I don't think my entries will be much longer than that, probably much shorter, but we'll see...

Entry 2: Hanging out at home

Nothing much going on today. Just sitting around before heading off to work. I might go ride after that...if I don't forget Player's bit in the trailer again. >.< Yesterday, I forgot and the only bit we had in the tack room that was ours was a snaffle. So, I turned Player out and let him go play a little bit since he hasn't been ridden in a few days. He sure had fun out there. xD Then I saddled him up and both me and him were like "whoa, this is different" the first few minutes after I mounted. It's been waaaay too long since I've ridden in a snaffle. It's a good thing my mother was there to remind me some of the things that I've forgotten about snaffles. All I did was give Player a work out, just walked, jogged, and loped. Then I decided that I want to play around and work on his spins. It was much easier to rock him back in the snaffle to my surprise, but I also held my reins in a different spot to make it easier to put him in a good frame.

I got my new show shirt in the mail today. It's really pretty with the pinkish reds, yellows, oranges, and teals. It fit like a glove and was actually really comfortable. I'm going to be looking forward to wearing it at the Sun Circuit at the end of next month. x3

Entry 3: Went Riding Yesterday and a Tom Update

I rode Player yesterday. Barry and Mary were out riding too. Barry was on Coco and Mary was on UV. Barry was just about done when I got out there and Coco was sweaty. Mary was telling him to put a cooler on her so she wouldn't get chills and dry alittle faster. Barry said she didn't need it. When Barry disappeared into the tackroom after he took her saddle off, Mary got off UV so she could get the cooler. To her surprise, right after she got off, Barry actually had the cooler. She didn't really want to finish riding UV so (she's a big lady so it's alittle bit of a hassle for her to get on and she's kind of lazy) so Barry got on him and rode him around.

I decided not to do circles today and rode Player along the rail of the arena. Since he is a finished reiner, he's almost always on circle mode so I wanted to do something different. After loping him for a while I went down the center on a straight line and did a lead change. It wasn't too bad so I broke him down to a walk and let him catch his air. Then I went around on the other lead and loped him, then a lead change. He resisted and kicked out. I broke him down, then loped him around some more then asked again. I must have set him up right and he actually wanted to since he changed leads a lot nicer. I stopped him a few times and he wasn't bad. He stayed in the ground and the last one was a really nice one. He had his butt in the ground and did a niiicceee slide. A little wide, but he'll always do that because he's a bigger reiner and his conformation would never allow him to do straight stops. He's a good boy. <3

We emailed Tom yesterday and asked how Whiz was doing. We also asked about the Sun Circuit and entries and all that jazz because it's just around the corner. Also when it would be good for me to go back out there and ride Whiz alittle bit. He emailed us back saying Whiz was fine and that we had a good shot at going to the circuit to get some points. He said he wanted to wait as long as possible to see if the both of us will be ready enough to go or save our money and shoot for another show.

He said next Wednesday would be good to come out on and he discussed with Rebecca's parents about me staying with them a couple days. They said I could stay with them so it'll be easier on my mother and I. Boy, he's really doing his best to make us buddies. I hope I really won't be much of a burden to Rebecca and her family. My mom and I are planning on working Sunday and then taking Wednesday off so that she could drive me up and then drive back.

Well, that's all for now folks

Alrighty then, I rode Player today. It was kind of windy, and Player and I had the day off yesterday because Player needs those days off, especially before a show.

So, I got on him and he was so much lazier than usual, I kind of expected because of he had a day off and such. He just needed to get back in the groove. So I start of with lighter cues and increase slightly when he half-asses what I ask him to do (excuse my language), I just reprimanded him a bit and went on.

I was feeling a little off myself. For some odd reason, whenever I am sore from something other than riding, it effects me quite a bit. I had a PE fitness test yesterday and my back and neck were a bit sore. My neck was worse than my back. So that might have been some factors that caused Player to drop his shoulder and stuff (plus his laziness) because I did random shifts of my seat and my "feel" of my hands were a little off too. I caught myself doing weird things sometimes, but other times I didn't. sweatdrop

Then Player didn't want to give his face all too well and stay in frame. I would raise my hand and drive with my legs a little bit, he'd frame up and be soft, then I'd release my hand. Normally that is what happens and it's all dandy, but not today. He's like "Not listening! LALALALALA! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!". So I got a little meaner and rougher, almost a little too rough. sweatdrop

Finally, I stopped a bit and thought about what was going on, and how this was going to be a disaster waiting to happen. So I lope him around, get his face and pick up his shoulder, then pull him in the ground and keep his shoulder and nose in. Also lot's of steering. I think I may ride in romals on Thursday (my mom is riding him tomorrow) and work on some steering. He finally got a little better and did a nice little back up with his shoulder up. I decided that was enough for the both of us, cooled him off and dismounted. When I untacked him I left a scrape on his side from getting a little rough with the spur. Boy, I felt really bad and put some corona ointment on it. That stuff works like a charm and it'll heal up pretty quickly as long as I'm careful.

I hate being "off" myself when I'm riding. I don't pay attention as much and do stupid s**t like that. Poor Player. ;_; Next ride: Think more and don't get as rough. No comments on the spur mark please. I know that I misused my spurs today already. ;_;
