Randolph Carter has been the star of many of Lovecraft's stories and gotten to know the other stars on a very personal level (as seen in Dream-Quest). He is a lonely New England author who yearns for his youth and gains fame from his stories about the Elder Gods and the realms of sleep. Much like many authors Lovecraft took his personality and put it into his main character thus creating Randolph Carter. All his adventures parallel Lovecrafts own fantasies and dreams and his actions are the same Lovecraft would have made if in such situations as Carter.
In Dream-Quest of the Unknown Kadath (a definate must-read for all Lovecraft fans. It's long but it's totally worth it.) Carter shows an unnatural knowledge of the dream world and it's creatures. He speaks the language of the Ghouls, Zoogs and the Night-Gaunts and even recognizes Pickman after he'd been transformed. He knows where to find Celephais and King Kuranes. He's described as an experienced dreamer and there's no dreamer more experienced than Lovecraft himself.
Oh yeah, this was all supposed to be a response to Nyoka's last post. So yeah, Randolph Carter rocks. He rocks hard.

Carter also goes through a few transformations himself.
Those who've read "The silver Key" and "Through the Gates of the Silver Key" know what I'm talking about... ninja
Carter hand;es himself very well... and you can tell he has the same weaknesses that Lovecraft had. A good character.

Agreed, mortals deserve to die. In honor of Cthulhu.
