So me and a kid were talking about music. Then we figured out we both played instruments, him guitar and me drums. Then he decided to take a stab at drummers and said "yeah, too bad drummers dont know anything about music. All your doing is hitting stuff." Of course I took offence to this. I asked him nicely "tap your foot seperatly from both of your hands." Of course he couldn't, so he just replied with "well drummers still dont know anything about music." Well it turns out he didn't know how many sharps were in C# major, while I recided the entire circle of 5ths (shouldn't a guitarist know this?) So he felt like an idiot.
Anyone else get these problems?

Usually that all happens, everyone thinks drummers don't know anything, but it's all about coordination. ;] --and of course you probably know lots of other things, like you said you could recite the circle of 5ths...gossh. I never learned that in my years of learning music. I've heard about it and know what it is basically, but like...haha. Yeeeah. xD
I'm doing a presentation on drumming today for my english honors class. We'll see how that goes. :] I've got some rockers in my class, and they're probably going to be pretty cocky about it.

It's fun to prove people wrong though. I try to make a good impression musically of drummers 3nodding

I hear stuff like that all the time...mainly from my band teacher. He says a monkey could play the drums & that's what he calls us all the time. & he can't play anything on them. When I point that out all he says is that the fact that he can't play drums shows that he can really play music. He's such an a**.

I really hate how people can say that drummers are idiots and all they do is simple crap. They have no idea what it takes to do any of this. I play Guitar, Bass and Drums. Guitar and Bass for about 4 years now. And drums for about a year or so. But its more difficult than guitar or bass. Playing in time was the ruffest thing for me. Trying to lock myself in with other things was just AHHHH....things are better now. But it takes a crap load of practice. However im still having trouble with double bass. Though i really dont need it, i have the pedal and i want to use it.

Let me tell you guys a little bit about what you have to know when you get to a University. If you are a percussion major:
Polyrhythms (playing in multiple time signatures, and even in multiple tempos simultaneously)
Harmony (Just like all the other musicians, circle of fifths/fourths, four part harmony)
Melody (yes, you will have to learn counterpoint and all of the other things that every musician will have to learn)
Yes, coordination, is almost exclusive to the drumset player.
You are REQUIRED to learn a KEYBOARD percussion instrument, even if you play the DRUMKIT.
I'd say that the only equal in coordination and polyrhythms would be the piano. Specifically jazz piano, but there are thousands of difficult classical works.
There's an argument for the difficulty of mastering every instrument, but I still feel that the two most difficult are the piano and drumkit.
Don't let those wussy bar-chord playing guitarists get you down, your road is a much longer and tougher one than theirs is.

Yea i have this problem with a kid. He's my real good friend, but he is very stubborn. He's a guitarist and thinks that drumming isn't music. He doesn't think pitch matters. He also says guitar is harder to play than the drums. In some aspects that's true if you can't move your fingers fast, but drumming takes coordination, and ...he doesn't have it. he can't play a basic snare hi-hat beat (not even bass!) yea but we're makin a 2 person band and we'll do many solos. lol. And also, though he hasn't heard any drummer other than neil peart, he compares him to virgil donati. i luv them both though. andTHANK YOU FOR THE TRUTH PIERCING_LIGHT!!! I play the keyboard now just so i have an easy time later.

Probably as well as your teacher. mrgreen

I had this once with an old friend who hadn't ever heard me play. He proclaimed that "drummers weren't musicians".
I took offence and shunned him but later he came to his senses and apologised. A year later, he takes up drumming and asks me for lessons.
Haha.
Tbh, some drummers don't know much about music... The thing is, unlike the rest of the band drummers don't really have to.
Hell, I can play piano at an average level, and I compose songs regularly but I don't need to do any of it to play in the bands I'm in.

But the main guitar player says they stunk because I was not playing right. But I was playing in perfect time so I said ill play guitar you think of something on the drums. So I played the songs on the guitar and he could not come up with anything. Then he said I was not playing the guitar right then he said white people dont know anything about music. im not raceist but he is as white as a sheet.

I'm a drummer of 11 years, guitarist of 10, bassist of 4 and pianist of 1. I mastered guitar within 4 years, to the point that (not to be arrogant, I'm just making a point here) people were amazed. I started gigging in a duo at 13 years old, playing anything from coffee houses to private parties to weddings. I'm also a fairly good singer and songwriter. But my passion is drums, and they're something I feel I'll never master. There's always another level you can take it to. Just wach a video of JoJo Mayer, and then try to say that drummers aren't musicians... heh. Plus, most drummers do know a bit about pitches -- especially if they've got a good ear. Drummers have to find the fundamental pitches of their shells. We've got to constantly retune to certain notes. We've got to master coordinating four limbs, not just two hands, and we've got to keep a beat for the band. If a guitarist messes up, no biggy. If a singer can't quite hit a note, it's cool. If a drummer skips a beat, the whole band gets off. We've got a lot of responsibility. And it rules. biggrin

People say drummers have it easy. *scoffs* It takes a crapload of practice! There's a lot more to it than just simple beats! You gotta practice a lot! Right now my brother has me learning loads of Zeppelin songs!
Everyone in a band is real important. But the drummer is probably the most important, 'cause they provide the ryhthm(I don't know if I spelled that right. redface ). If a drummer misses a beat, and can't pick up, it's all over. Guitarists, singers, and Keyboarders all just provide the flash. Bassists also provide ryhthm.

if it was so easy then why do almost all of the kids that rip us drummers off play the guitar? why not play the drums and give yourself an easy ride?
and how would that explain the shortage of drummers nowadays? obviously if it was easy and for stupid people more people would play
idiots. all of em.
