Personality: Melantho is a fiery, passionate mare with a penchant for the extreme. She takes nonsense from no one and, when roused to anger, is more likely to lash out than act with reason.

Location: Just about everywhere - she moves often to avoid her father's herd, but frequently returns to her tree despite the risks of doing so.

Melantho's Tree is located in the Southeast Quadrant

The tree ahead of you is vast, a gnarled, thorned black monument to the life of its owner. Upon approaching it, you can see a multitude of hollows in the trunk - at the foot of the tree is the largest hollow of all, from which two bright blue eyes gleam. More creatures than the owner live here, or so it would seem, and if they are canny enough to avoid the razor-sharp thorns that grow upon tendrils from the trunk and branches then they are afforded a great deal of protection. Even if the tree's guardian paid them no heed, they would be hard to reach amongst the vicious spines...and, from the look of the place and the size of the hoofprints in the earth, the Nequus who lives here is a force to be reckoned with.

In the winter, the tree has no leaves at all. The tangle of thorns in the upper branches, however, provides some protection from the wind, a little from the rain, and a lot from any snow that should happen to fall. Briefly, in the spring, the tree erupts with new green life as its leaves grow in, but before long the leaves darken until the whole tree seems black. When the summer has passed, the autumn brings a spectacular display: the leaves all turn flame orange within a couple of days, and at least some will still cling to the tree at the end of the season while the rest colour the grass for some distance around. When a strong gust of wind catches the autumn tree, the spray of bright leaves that are loosed from their twigs and branches seems almost, to a casual observer, like a burst of flame.

Name: Melantho
AKA: Mel, Daemon, "Wicked One" (both of the latter in jest by Aku, anyone else would get PWNED for calling her that)
Gender: Female
Age: Mare
Height: 15h2
Colour: Double Black Gene
Appearance: Entirely midnight black, save for amber eyes
Strengths: Smarter than average, brave to the point of folly, high tolerance for pain and frightening situations, way with poetry and words
Weaknesses: Slow running and flying speed (compounded by Aku-shaped encumbrance), little physical stamina, low pain threshold, rather unlucky, somewhat clumsy, reacts a little slowly to new situations, slight tendency to act without thinking (sometimes improved by Aku's input)
Family: Father, Meleager, evil; mother, name unknown, deceased; adopted brother, Aku, adorable (^^!)
Relationship Status: Single
Alignment: Chaotic good
Personality: "Ardent" - fiery, passionate, fervent, poetic, hot-headed, hot-blooded, prone to violent moods (and violent mood swings), vigilante attitude toward justice, almost total lack of respect for authority
Likes: Aku, beautiful mares, handsome stallions, poets, artists, kind people, funny people, fruit, running, being strong, being in charge of herself, new experience, sleep, dreaming
Dislikes: Her father, cruelty, being helpless, being commanded, being hated for her appearance, people who hurt her friends, being made to look stupid, being woken up, losing

Currently (IC): Heading North with Storm and Aku
Currently (OOC): Accumulating random stuff for her journal... ^^

Extended Bio:

Melantho was born to a beautiful mother and a mighty father; she the consort to his herd leader. Her father was a tyrant, but he ran an efficient group: his people never wanted for food, water, shelter or protection, and their lands were wide and beautiful. Her mother was kind and gentle, but weakened so much by the birth of her daughter that she never recovered. When she died of a sudden illness during her daughter's youth, Melantho's misfortunes began in earnest.

A pair of black Bae, known for causing trouble and suffering throughout Shrilal, came to the attention of the superstitious herd just at the time when their food stocks began to run low. Glorious though their land was, it was too close to Casa Tiner to escape every harsh winter: much of their usual food supply became unusable beneath the snowdrifts, and everyone was looking for someone to blame. With the stories of the black daemon-Nequus fresh in their minds, the herd turned all too easily upon those among them with dark coats. Many like Melantho were driven out - indeed, she herself was spared only because of her position as the tyrant's daughter. For his part, the Reya stallion took every opportunity to make his daughter feel responsible for her mother's death. This treatment brought her seemingly completely under his control, and made her life a misery. Only with the care and guidance of a young black Rit named Aku, a friend she had made in her early days, did she retain her sense of self and her pride.

The two dark creatures stuck together, Melantho looking out for her small friend and Aku giving useful advice and cheerful remarks wherever they were needed. This went on throughout their early youth, until the day Melantho's father chose to find her a mate at last. He hoped that the candidate would take his daughter to the fringes of the herd, removing the problem from his sight and the contention from under his nose: indeed, when he found a Bae called Jacques who seemed willing to take his daughter on, he had already been sizing up Melantho's more acceptable half-siblings as heirs for some time. He did not expect Melantho to disobey his orders so adamantly, or to leave the herd that very night. By dawn, both she and Aku were gone without a trace.

It was not long into Melantho's flight when she discovered who her father had sent to get her back.

Commandante Clytaemnestra had been something of a mentor to Melantho during her youth, and one of the few Nequus who never seemed to care about her colouring. She had taught the filly how to fight, both in self-defence and in pitched battle, and how to survive in the wilderness alone. Though her lessons were not complete when she left, Melantho had learned enough to get by. However, she would always remember Clytaemnestra as the huge, seemingly unbreakable figure of strength who had rescued her from an ill-fated flight into the mountains as a child: distraught at her mother's death, she had run without thinking and become hopelessly lost. It was this same Clytaemnestra who had been sent to pursue her now.

Knowing that the goat-patterned Reya mare was now hot on her trail, a full unit of fighting stallions at her back, combing every inch of Eden in the hope of bringing her back to the herd, was almost enough to make Melantho give up. She could not run from Clytaemnestra forever, and she knew that if it came to a fight she would lose. There seemed to be no way out, and she was on the brink of despair when an idea came to her. Perhaps, she thought to herself, later putting the idea to Aku, she could run for just long enough. Perhaps she could become strong enough - not to defeat Clytaemnestra, who was the messenger, but to destroy the root of the problem. Her father. If she could defeat him and win control of the herd, her life would be her own again: she need only name a suitable successor and she could once again go free.

Aku was delighted with the plan - he had narrowly avoided a good few stompings by the stallion in the past, and looked forward to seeing him get his come-uppance at last. Settling upon their course of action, the two friends set off into the wilds of Eden: though their future was uncertain, their hopes were high and their hearts were set, irreversibly, upon winning true freedom.

- hate as prejudice

Can you see them out there?

Yeah. Five, maybe six of 'em. All seen us. Don't look like they're comin' close, though.

Why do they look at us that way, Aku?

They hate us, Mel, babe. They hate us 'cuz we're black. And black is different - just different enough to be worth hatin'. Ain't it always so with us?

...Yeah. People often hate people because they're different. It's so...augh, it makes me angry. It's ridiculous.

And still people do it all the time, don't they? Prejudice, it's called - pre-judging, if you can see where that's coming from. Judging people on what you see, or hear, or whatever, right at the first moment. Deciding that they're a certain way right off the bat and sticking to it, never giving them a chance to show who they are.

You kinda have to think about someone like that at first, but hanging on to it? That's just...that just sucks. And finding something out about someone and automatically assuming that it means loads of other things and...argh. So, so stupid.

Uh-huh, tell me. Real no-brainer there. All black folks are evil - oh, 'cuz that holds up.

- origins of prejudices

It all started back when Mother died that winter, didn't it? When the food ran low and the stories of the black Bae were getting about?

Sounds about right, yeah.

They were...I guess they were looking for someone to hate, weren't they? Looking for someone to blame for everything that was going wrong?

Mmyep. Scapegoat. People used to reckon you could put all the sins of your herd into a little animal like a goat, chase it away, and it'd take all the badness away with it. Escaped goat. Scapegoat. See?

...whoa, that's cracked.

But people believed it, see? They believed they could just put all the blame and all the sin and all the wrong into the goat, and it would all go away. And that's what they did to us. They blamed us for everything, so they wouldn't have to look too closely at themselves any more.

Yeah. ...I guess it was understandable they chose us, what with the superstition and all. They must have been afraid of us.

Fear drives a lot of dumb stuff, Mel. Makes it understandable. Doesn't make it excusable. I bet those black Bae didn't do half as much bad stuff as everyone says - what about all that blood-drinking in the story we heard at the gathering? D'you really think they do that?

...No. I guess they probably don't. And even if they did, that shouldn't mean we do as well. One white horse with magical powers doesn't make them all magical. It shouldn't work for black creatures either.

Mmm.

- hate as a fuel

I guess I've done a lot of hating myself, too. It's kept me going at times, thinking of what I can do to all the people who've ever messed me up once I'm strong enough to face them.

Sometimes it's all you've got, girl. Gotta use it. Don't have much choice. But if you got something better...

Yeah. There are better ways than hate. ...But don't you like to hate sometimes?

I dunno if I'd call it that. More like...enjoy getting my revenge at last. A-HA!

What th- Hey! That's my tail, you little monster!

Victory is miiiine! Muahahahaha!

- banding together

I'm so lucky I found you, Aku. I don't know how I'd've got through all this without you.

Same luck I had findin' you, Mel, babe. It's always easier when there's someone who understands. Feels like...we're only carrying one load between us instead of one load each.

Yeah.

- reclaiming words

What's a dyke, Aku? ...No, seriously, don't laugh.

It's a mare-loving mare, babe. Some Nequus don't like 'em - they use the word to try and insult them.

Well, that seems to be working well. I just heard those two calling each other "dyke" and they don't seem like they're calling names.

Funny how you can pull words back, ain't it? Demon.

Hellspawn.

Love you, babe.

I love you too.

- after hate?

Say, Mel...what'chu gonna do when things are all right with you again? When your father's all beaten down and we don't have the Commandante after our asses and that?

...I don't know.

Aku - pain in arse, thorn in side, stress relief, agony uncle and all-around backup guy

Jacques - former betrothed (poor b*****d... XP), master of well-timed gifts, bit emo but good-hearted

Howl - patronising bugger, funny coat, probably very good with girls but shite with me, nonetheless all right I suppose

Storm - seer, poetry rival, inexplicable Jala and not on good terms with Aku, not ready to think of as an enemy but still being cautious

Cressida - fast friend (emphasis on the fast), singer of songs and ally of the humans, can be relied upon not to give me away

Father - stealer of freedom, obnoxious matchmaker, yeller of insults, maker of threats and current arch-enemy

The black Bae - responsible for my persecution (and Aku's), hurters of foals and fruit, in for a serious beating if I ever catch up with them

Clytaemnestra - possibly the most terrifying mare ever to set hoof in this world, leader of Father's herd army, currently out for my blood along with Father's soldier-stallions

Break Away

DareDelvil
From her resting place in the heavens, the moon looked down upon the darkened forest as the peace of the night was shattered.

The sound of splintering wood cut through the glade, cruel and precise as a human’s knife. Powerful black hooves found their target over and over again, the vicious blows fueled by a potent, poisonous mixture of anger and hate. The trunk of this old tree, still standing somehow after a storm had struck it dead years ago, could not last much longer.

As she lashed out with every ounce of her strength, the dark mare imagined those she had once loved - back when a black Nequus was no more than a black Nequus - falling beneath the onslaught.

Dark one.

Cursed.

Evil.

Her concentration slipping after a long period of exertion, she delivered a glancing blow to the much-enduring tree and caught the side of her leg on a stray piece of bark. She almost heard the skin rip. Upon regaining her footing, cursing acrimoniously, she examined the cut - not deep, but liable to remain sore for some time. Today had, to put it mildly, not been a good day.

...And those approaching hoofbeats were unlikely to improve it at all. She had come here because she needed to be where other people were not, and yet still folk insisted upon troubling her. Taking a deep breath and slowly letting it out, she turned towards the sound and attempted to look as normal and approachable as possible: she dreaded to think what would happen if any word of her wild behaviour ever reached her father. Who could be seeking her out in any case? Not him; she knew his tread too well and this was not it. The sound was too light, too easy upon the ears to be the great brute who had spawned her - well, at least she had been gifted with his powerful frame if not with his perfect colouring.

“...My lady?”

The voice was soft and fair, but unfamiliar. She watched, silent, as an unknown stallion entered the clearing. Almost at once he bowed his head - how polite! - but soon after he was speaking again and she had no more time to wonder at him. “I was told I would find you here. I thank you for your confidence in me: allow me to assure you that it is not misplaced.”

It was rude, she knew, but she could not help staring. At least the couple of swift, bemused blinks broke it up a little. “...Confidence? Misplaced? ...I’m sorry, but I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The stranger was rather taken aback. “But...I am to be your mate.”

What?” Oh, manners, manners! “...sorry, excuse me - did you just say what I think you said?”

“Your father sent me to look for you...”

He sounded rather hesitant now, as well he might. The dark mare was not particularly tall in comparison with him, but beneath her skin she might as well have been forged of steel. On top of that, the look in her eyes was far from gentle. “Did he now?” she said, her tone deceptively calm. “Funny, that...because I distinctly remember telling him I would receive no suitors at all. I am far from ready for such things.”

This time it was the stallion’s turn to blink in confusion. “...I was under the impression that you were willing...”

That was the last straw. Righteous fury bubbled up inside the young mare’s stomach, hot and bright and commanding - oh, he would pay. He would pay dearly. She had to take another deep, calming breath to prevent herself from screaming in rage: her unfortunate companion had suffered enough of her temper for one day. ...Talking of him, she had better at least explain herself before charging off. Poor thing. “...Would you excuse me for a moment?” she asked, as kindly as she could manage when her jaw was stubbornly refusing to unclench. “I think I’d better...ahem...discuss this matter with my father before it gets any...worse...”

But those hoofbeats were familiar, and coming from not far off. Oh, skies above, he was here. He had probably been here for the duration. The surge of fear was cold and biting, but the anger soon swept it away. Her eyes narrowed.

“...On second thought,” she said to the newcomer quietly but firmly, “you might want to be here for this.”

“Here for what - to witness your punishment for so brazenly refusing to obey my orders?”

A huge dapple-grey Reya stallion trotted into the glade, his head held high, his dark eyes flashing with fury. Her father. This was the lord who had decreed that she would take a mate. This was the tyrant who had not cared for her refusal. To her credit, despite a slew of horrible past experiences the black mare did not shy away.

“No,” she retorted sharply, staring him down. “To hear your explanation as to who the blazes you think you are.”

The mighty stallion stamped one massive forehoof - coming from anyone smaller, the act might have been called petulant. “How dare you address me in such a manner, you ungrateful wretch!”

His daughter tossed her head and snorted. “Oh, don’t give me that!” she scoffed, amazed at her own bravado. Anger does strange things to people. “You used me as a bargaining chip and played him for a fool! Offering him a mate you knew would be unwilling - what manner of Nequus are you? And not even that, but you gave him the least of your daughters! Never mind her strength and stature, you gave him the untouchable! You gave him the dark one that the other mares won’t approach, that’s only worth insulting from afar! You gave him the ill-tempered black hellspawn that puts curses on foals, everyone says, and no doubt eats human flesh!”

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the potential suitor wince. Perhaps she was overdoing it a little. Deep breath, calm down... “The fillies I grew up with only have bruises to give me now,” she carried on, still furious but somewhat quieter. “Why should any stallion, upon merit of my appearance and breeding alone, wish to have me for his mate? You played him a cruel trick, never mind what you did to me!”

The dark mare’s sire was clearly taking in her words - he was pawing the ground, as she knew he often did when aggravated. “You are young and foolish,” he growled. “This is a most fortunate match for you. No matter what you think of my actions, you would be wise to bow your head and accept it.”

“Aye, perhaps I would,” the mare spat back, “if all I wanted from a match were a match. I cannot - indeed, will not - pledge my life to a stallion I do not both know and love, no matter how good or kind he may be at his heart. And the day I bow my head and accept the opposite of that is the day I lose myself, the day I become what you believe me to be: your property. If the only language you speak has no word for my freedom...I’d sooner not speak to you at all.”

A harsh, short bark of laughter cut into her pride. “You think you’re so strong? Ha! You are nothing compared to what’s out there - you cannot survive without my protection! This is the only life for you!

Silence reigned for a few painful seconds. When the black mare spoke again, her answer was wreathed in cold determination.

“Then maybe,” said she, “I’d rather die.”

Perhaps it was the look in her eyes at that moment that balked him at last - when she turned and walked towards the other end of the glade, her father made no move to pursue her. The suitor’s expression was a mask of disbelief. Hm, she had been right: the poor soul had not been expecting a mare like her. It was a shame. She would have liked to have known him better, but she had probably frightened him off by now.

“I offer you one last chance to return, my daughter!”

She ignored the stallion’s shout. She was sick of his shouting. For that matter, she was sick of being his daughter.

“Think of your family, your position, your comfort! Think of your mother!

...no. He would not hold the memory of her absent mother over her any longer. That old tune had reduced a lively black filly to a wreck of shame too many times. She turned her head and glowered at him, firing a single parting shot as she walked from the glade:

“I’d rather think of myself.”

The trees, as she passed effortlessly between them, seemed akin to the broken bars of a cage. It was a strange and wonderful thing to be free of her father at last. She could walk where she chose now. She could walk how she chose. She could make her own way and answer only to herself. She could obey her own laws and define her own destiny. She would be freedom itself, and she would bow to no one.

Perhaps, she thought to herself with a tiny internal smile, someone might even like that in her.

Yo - this is a space that Mel's kindly let me live in. The thorns don't trouble me at all. ^w^
User Image
My name's Aku. I'm Mel's blackness-buddy, her fellow evil fiend who eats human flesh and curses foals and all that. As with all of this tree, leave your prejudices at the perimeter and be prepared for cartloads of unconditional sarcasm...

- About Me

So yeah. I'm Aku and that, like I said. There's some stuff about me you oughtta know, so this is just the basics.

Name: Aku
AKA: "Little Devil", "Death", "the Rit" or just Aku (hey, it's a good name)
Gender: Male
Age: Adult
Height: Maybe four or five hands
Colour: Black Jaguar
Appearance: Patterned like the animal with pale blue eyes
Strengths: People skills, ability to relate to and read those around me, able to overcome past woes, natural weapons
Weaknesses: Small size, lack of bulk and strength, gets lost in intellectual conversations
Family: Melantho - best friend and adopted younger sister
Relationship Status: Single
Alignment: Chaotic good
Personality: "Amiable" - friendly, warm-hearted, easy-going, amusing, helpful, knowing
Likes: Moths, rabbits, small birds, good conversation, having a laugh, Mel, being Aku
Dislikes: Colour- and race-prejudiced people, Nequus who look down on me because I'm not a Nequus, not being accepted, the cold, the wet, being hungry

Currently (IC): Heading west with Mel
Currently (OOC): (groooowl...)

- My History

So I grew up pretty much on my own. My dark coat grew in properly and they decided it wasn't really grey when I was old enough to fend for myself. Tossed me out, called me Aku - it means "evil". Whatever. I hung around the Nequus for protection of a sort, hunted the meat they didn't use. It was all right as a life, I guess. The past doesn't really bother me much.

I met Mel when we were both just scraps. Her mother died soon after. Gods, her mother was beautiful. Her father's an a*****e, but more on that later. Anyway, I comforted her as best I could. I don't remember her having any siblings, so I almost became a brother to her. Then, when she walked out on her father after the betrothal thing, I went with her. No sense in staying: they knew I was close to her, and they'd've killed me if I'd stayed.

I got injured just recently while we were running from her father's bully-boys. Mel brought me meat while I was recovering, and once I was a bit better I met a couple'a nice Aeri boys down on the coast: Vox and his daddy Lucius. Lucie scared the hell outta me when I first saw him, all those bones everywhere, but they're both awesome. Reckon Vox must look a lot like his momma, though, 'cause he doesn't look nothin' like his daddy. XD

Now I'm mended I reckon Mel and I'll be going further from the tree, letting her train so she can beat her father in a fight. Or just his soldiers, whatever. So she can take care of herself properly. Me, I'm just looking to spread the word. Black people aren't evil. Really, we're just like you.

yeah, people like you just fuel my fire
yeah, people like you just do
you liar
you liar
you liar
you liar

yeah, my layers are thick
and i´ve got a bad attitude
yeah that knife in my back
has fingerprints that belong to you
got a grudge, got a grudge
got a grudge that i´m holding
for as long as i live
cuz you lied, you lied
you lied to my face
and that´s something that i can´t forgive

yeah, people like you just fuel my fire
yeah, people like you just fuel my fire
yeah, people like you just fuel my fire
why, people like you just do
you liar
you liar
you liar
you liar

- Mark my tree or its leaves and I'll beat you to a pulp
- Show disrespect to my player or my player's friends and you're banned on pain of...lots of pain
- Show disrespect to the shop owners and you're likewise banned
- Steal anything from here and you're so dead it's untrue
- Harm my friends and you become my enemy
- Harm my enemies and you might become my friend
- Harm my father before I get a shot at him and you're meat for the vultures
- I can add or take away any rules I want
- ...I think that's it for now.
