Help! I can't seem to hit the low notes on my flute.
Does anyone have some tips?

Do you have a flute teacher?

Go get Trevor Wye's Tone Book 1

Work on it. Spend lots of time on it. Low notes are the most beautiful on the flute to me, especially when they sound so dark and rich and full of goooooood tone.

Relax on low notes. Make sure your throat stays open. Pretend there's a golf ball in your throat

You know Jigglypuff from Pokemon? How she says "Jigglypuff!!" all the time? The way she says it is the same way you make your throat when playing the flute XD Wow I never used that metaphor before.

But pretend you're an evil jigglypuff. Make it sound dark and scary. >.>

xd Have fun with that.

I don't know if you do this or not, but I always used to and sometimes still tighen my lip corners and make everything tense just so I can get the low notes out, but now I'm making myself have everything relaxed and still keep an open jaw almost as if I was going to play a high note. It sounded a lot louder after I had gotten used to the transition of tight to loose. So I'm pretty much just agreeing with mediocre_flutist, but I still hope this helped!

Really relaxed embochure, relaxed jaw, and and a decent amount of air, they won't come out without enough air.

And I'm just re-stating what the above people said. xD;

REALLY open up your throat. And blow the living hell out of your flute.
Well, I'm totally exaderating. But you get my drift ^_^

I would like to re-state what everyone else have said. Relax and sit up strait! This will get a whole lot more air from your lungs to your flute. To play low notes -in my experience- you need to just keep a strong lung support. In other words... Practice makes Perfect! heart I absolutely agree with however said that the low notes sound amazing on the flute!

Blow a little softer than you usually do, it might help. Loosen the front of your lips too.

you could start on a note in the middle register and keep descending from there. and when you can get it softly, gradually try to increase volume (but lower the airstream and try blowing more into the flute and not across it)

support! Thats another thing you need to do! Make sure you are using your abs too! That helps with your air.

so heres basically what everyone said:

Open throat, lots of air, support, make sure your embochure isn't tight, and another tip from me: aim your air down towards your elbow. you will have a better sound.

Also, maybe you should try humming and playing at the same time. play a couple notes humming and then play them again without humming. there will be a HUGE difference

You must use plenty of air support and open your throat (think about flattening you tongue out like when the doctor checks your throat). The tongue is a very long muscle that extends down the throat. When you flatten it, the same amount of air support has more space to fill and so it moves more slowly. This lowers the pitch. If you need more ways to think about it or you don't understand, ask the choir director at your school for exercises for signing low notes. My high school band director had a saying: If you can sing it, you can play it. This is partially to do with ear training and partially to do with the things your body can do for you just becuase you want it to, even if you don't know how. Learning to sing in the lower end of your vocal range will help you to play the lower end of your flute's range.

I had a teacher tell the flute section to act like the seasons when playing high and low notes. She said that if you were going really high you should be like the winters wind, cold and sharp; and when going low you should be like summer, warm and soft

when i play low notes i pull my bottom jaw backwards and you blow slightly more downwards into the embochure hole than when you are playing mid-range or higher, also blow "slow"/ "warm" air, && use LOTS of air, if you still cant get it try a descending scale at a very slow tempo, the low notes are actually quite beautiful and really can change the sound of a band if your section is good at playing low
