The scraggly wolf, whose fur was thin and matted, moved across the ground with unusual grace. He was an easily frightened creature but he was also cunning.

With a swish of his tail he reared up, placing his forepaws against the nearest tree to poke his nose into a little hole in the bark. Snuffling noisily he caught the scent of squirrel. Ew.

Deciding against hunting one of those fluffy tailed freaks, the so called 'wog' continued onwards, listening to nothing except his grumbling belly.

Iphis plodded stolidly through the forest, her pale claws clicking off the hard winter-solid ground. She was the epitome of ungainly - short legged, large, stockily built. She moved in a swaying lope slower than more longer limbed wolves might have and didn't have any of the usual elegence of her brethren. The female was tired, haggard looking, thin despite her bulk. She had been travelling on her own for several weeks now and the feeding was not good when you were neither fleet nor particularly cunning.

The blue female came to a juddering halt, though, when she spied patches of black moving against the pale landscape. Once her eyes had adjusted a little she could see a wolf ahead of her - his mixed markings had left her a little confused as to his overall shape. She had never really gotten along well with others but sneaking around another might be somewhat misconstrued. It might also be good to know if there was any good feeding around this area too.

Bolstering herself for what she felt was an encumbrance she called out "Haw, you o'er there, Black'n'white!" she called, assigning him a simple name for want of another.

Whilst Fluke was reasonably intelligent he lacked any physical presence and definately had no courage. He was a coward and somewhat insane but what he definately wasn't, was observant.

So even though the female was not as graceful as most wolves, her movements still went unknown. That was until she spoke.

Ahhhhh~! He gave a yelp of fear, recoiling as if he had been struck at. Who're yer talkin' ter miss 'sky bloo'? He curled up his front lip to reveal a row of slightly yellow fangs. I ain' jes black n' white yet know! Then slowly he let his face muscles relax and he lowered himself slightly, tail curling between his hind legs.

Yoo talk weird, eh? He was one to talk...

Iphis had been made fun of for many things in her time on this earth but she had never, ever, had her speech questioned. This male, he was a bit scrawny she noticed as she wandered closer, didn't speak like anyone she'd heard before either. He was a bit jumpy, too. Didn't much look like the best person to ask where to find food, really. He was a bit weedy overall the large female thought. It made her a little more comfortable - she could deal with smaller wolves who teased he - though possibly in a less constructive manner than she should.

"You're no exactly a wonder wi words yourself, Black'n'white And I don't see much other colour aboot ye unless yer hiding something under yer tail there." she said, a tad cruelly, a little defensively, motioning to his tucked under tail. "An ah am Iphis. EYE FISS" she said, exaggerating the pronunciation as if explaining it to a pup.

Walking a little closer, she raised herself up a little, her inner defensive-aggression making her wish to assert herself against what appeared to be an obviously weaker wolf. 'I am a direwolf, I am a direwolf - the mantra repeated in her head and kept her calm. The fiction had stopped her acting out before, kept her out of trouble and she relied on it somewhat when someone antagonised her.

He fluffed up a little and drew himself up, trying to make himself look bigger. He failed miserably though but he kept his head up and pointed his eyes straight towards her. They were a vibrant gold, so wonderfully framed by black that they seemed to leap out at anyone who looked into them.

Those eyes had run into four generations of his family - possibly even more - yet he did not know anything of his relatives. Not really.

I speak jes fine. He muttered, An I'm Fluke, sa call me that instead, eh? Jeeze Eye-eye yah sure dos 'ave a temper on yah. Not like I did aneethin but sniff at a tree.

He flicked his tail and his belly grumbled again.

Ugh...

In his scrawny little body, black and white, so dull against the winter colours, his eyes did really stand out. She stared at them for a moment, seeing some sort of inner fire there - wether the male kindled it or not.

"Aye well ah speak right too." she countered, in a slightly childish manner. Her tone was a tad petulant but still quite deep, glottal, accented. All of her pack had spoken similarly - thought she understood others might sound different. To her his way of speaking was odd but she supposed she could let it go if he did.

"Fluke, eh?" no reason why she wouldn't call him it, she thought, thinking to herself that it was unusual but had a nice, sharp sound to it. Flook. "Ah cannae help but get a bit annoyed when a wolf ah've never met says ah talk funny, eh?" she retorted, canting her head to one side a little. "Wis there somethin' interestin' aboot the tree?" she wondered aloud.

Yer, yer alrigh'. Damn yoo women sure doo get angry o'er every little thing! He shook himself then and moved a step closer. Unlike this she-wolf, Fluke had long gangly legs and little next to no fat or muscle about him. There was no true thick coat because of his constant scratching and no fat to keep him warm. So it was no surprise that he hated the winter months.

He sneezed.

Nothin'. I ne'er said there was. Jes a tree and my nossle. He sniffed and then moved to wipe his nose on an extended foreleg.

Actually, ter be honest I'm lookin' fer some mud. Or was...til my belly got the grumps.

Direwolf, above it! she said to herself, trying not to take offence at his comment and thus prove him right. She really was easily angered or, rather, she had always been easy to bait when teased. She watched the male for a moment, unsure wether he was lying and was hiding something or wether he was telling the truth.

Didn't much matter she decided in the end, he didn't seem much like the kind of wolf who could hide much even if he wanted. Iphis also had a problem with underestimating wolves who were physically weaker. She was not the braniest and fell back on her brawn most times to solve her problems. Shrugging inwardly, the hefty female questioned Fluke.

"Mud? Whit de yeh want mud fer?" she tried to keep her tone neutral, questioning but, as always, it came out slightly derogatory as if he she was asking why he'd just announced he was going to go climb a tree or jump off a cliff. The grumps? Oh. "Yer hungry? Aye a suppose ye look it, too." she said, not thinking it might be taken offensively, she hadn't really meant it so but she had a terrible way of wording things...

I've been told by a big ol' wog that mud kills the rrr'bitin' fleas. I got 'em all o'er me and they're ruining me fur! I wan them dead.

He tilted his head and pranced closer, his skinny body definately looking like it could do with a good meal. Yah gots some food somewheres? He had no pride what so ever.

His grandmother would be ashamed!

Cos I can eat it if yah dun wan it. He licked his chops and looked hopeful despite the fact his nose smelt no meat.

"Dis it really?" she asked, curious despite herself. She had never heard of such a remedy and the biting parasites could be such a pain in the summer. She'd have to remember that one... if it did in fact work and someone hadn't just told Fluke that to make fun of him when he came back covered in mud.

"Dae ah look like ah huv any food?" she asked, her tone more weary than angry now. "Ahm hungry mahself, Fluke, there isnae much good eatin at this time o' year, eh?" The blue and white toned female sighed, now, rolling her shoulders which were getting stiff from standing still in the icy cold air.

"In fact when ah saw ye ah was gonnae ask ye if you knew anywhere as wis good fer gettin food but ah guess that's no gonnae happen, eh?"

He nodded as she seemed to disbelieve him, but even if it had been a made up cure Fluke was willing to take the risk. He really wasn't stupid, just desperate to rid himself of that constant itching.

As she confirmed she had no food the wolf let out a wail - similar to the whining of a pup. Atleast his mother had been able to find food for him. Now he was out here all alone there was no one to hunt for him...unless...

He whimpered and moved closer still, flattening his ears and making a great show of trembling and swaying on his paws.

Then I guess meh belly is gonna keep on complainin', fore'er and e'er till I die! He was such a drama queen! ...king?

One of her eyebrows raised over a custard-yellow eye as the black and white omega wailed like a pup. "Haw, git a hold o' yersel'. Are ye a wolf or a rabbit!? eh?" she plodded forward a little, baring her slightly over-sized teeth a little as if to scare some wits into him. The only method she knew to cajole someone was to threaten them and that was the tack she took now.

"Ye've got tae try at least. Nae point in just rolling over and letting yerself starve." she stated, quite bluntly. She was slightly tempted to drag him along, make him hunt with her. It'd certainly be easier with two if he could hold his own. She was not sure that he could, though, and he was a whiny little runt.

"Ah huvnae had anythin' to eat fur..." she paused, thinking "three, four days now but ye don't see me grumbling like a pup at the teat!."

He did indeed back off a little, falling silent as she towered above him. She seemed so much more powerful than he was and it was intimidating. He wasn't sure he liked it but then again he didn't have much choice in the matter.

Good hunters were strong and muscular. This Eye-eye was a good choice.

When I was a youngin' I hunted those li'l cricket bugs. Then the frost came and they 'opped off somewheres. He shrugged and took another step back, raising his head from its stooped position.

Ooooo bu' I dunno when I las' ate! Ages ago. Ages! He huffed then and fell silent.

One drawback to his plan. The teasing.

Teach me tah hunt then. He finally said, seeming somewhat eager.

Re-evaluating him slightly Iphis realised this male must be a lot younger than herself. Barely more than a pup if he spoke truthfully. Perhaps she was being a little hard on him? But no.. most wolves had learned enough skill by his age, surely. Cricket bugs? Hmph. Even if it was an exaggeration it was clear he hadn't been eating well. Maybe he truly was inept at hunting.

The big female almost fell over laughing at his suggestion of her teaching him to hunt, though. She had never been the most proficient and had been bullied about her lack of skill on the chase. Her stubby legs worked against her in long runs and her only merit was that she had the power to grab and hold onto any beast sent towards her.

Thinking a moment, though, and it did take a long, slow moment for her mind to work through the possibility, she thought it might work if this scrawny male were to drive prey towards her. He had long enough legs and wasn't too heavy - hunger also gave any wolf a keen edge. She supposed it wouldn't hurt and if they did catch something all the better.

She also didn't like to admit she couldn't do something.

"Aye ah suppose ah could teach ye tae hunt but how dae ah know ye'd even be able to? Yeh hardly look like you could catch a mouse." she looked down on him again a little imperiously, elated at not being the underdog herself for a change. "Ah suppose ah might consider it if only cos yer a sore sight for the rest o' the world otherwise." she added somewhat teasingly but with a strong hint of speaking her true mind to it. When you had never been treated kindly it was hard to be kind in turn.

His tail wagged softly as she agreed and for now he chose to ignore the comments on his appearance. He knew he was an eye-sore and deep down he knew that he would be looked down at because of it. Even his mother who had birthed him had never been openly affectionate.

Fluke had been a symbol of her mistake, a constant reminder that she had bred with a dog because no wolf would have her.

But whilst it hurt his mother to have him around it hurt Fluke too. He could see the disgrace his mother felt, the embarrasment to have a little hybrid trotting at her heels calling her mother. Sometimes in the company of others she would get him to call her by her true name so that others might think he was simply a pup she had adopted from pity.

Soon he stopped calling her mother altogether.

It would not be correct to say that his mother, known also as Orphen, was a cruel wolf. In fact she was a kind and loving creature who was full of energy and desperate to be loved. Yet what female could find a loving mate when they had a half-blood son with them?

He had left for her sake as well as his and whilst he hoped she would try and find him he kenw deep down she would not. He was old enough to be alone anyway but totally incapable of caring for himself. He had never been taught to hunt, how to make a shelter, how to track properly. It was as if a tame wolf had been thrown into the wild.

Yet whilst this blue wolfess annoyed him she was also encouraging. For whilst he was alone he was as good as dead, with others he could survive. Of that he was sure.

Yer'll 'ave tah talk meh through it bu' I can run real fast on these legs o' mine. I'll probably mess up but it's better tah try than not, right? All gain an' no lose.

((Sorry for the late reply - finally getting over my flu enough to actually *think*))

All gain and no lose. "Aye, that's right, aw gain, nae losin'" she nodded, turning her large body this way and that for a moment. She was trying to figure out where she'd been heading, what way was likely to have some prey... Then something came to her. The elk! They were large animals, tough and wary at this time of year but their young were still not totally wary of their kind. She had seen some a few days back travelling with the river. By a long process of imagination (another thing which didn't really come easy to the she-wolf) she thought they might well still be on that watercourse - only a few miles south of where the pair stood.

Most wolves are not bad trackers. Knowing the lay of the land, being able to scent prey which had been around days before, knowing innately when there were sick, wounded, young. These were what Iphis relied on as she made her judgement. She had grown up amongst a normal pack, in a normal family. She had been picked on, though, for her stature and stubbyness, had never been a great hunter and was not blessed with sharp wits to make up for that.

She hoped, ferverently, that the herd had not been worried too much, that the season had been hard on them. Lean, easier to catch prey was better than fatter, fitter prey.

It was a chance but chances seemed seductive when your belly was rumbling. "Come on then!" was all she said, turning her rump towards him, tail swishing side to side, as she headed off in the direction she thought the large-antlered, front heavy deer might be. "Ah'll tell ye aboot huntin' as we go."

(( s'okay luff <3 I'm just glad you're feeling better! ))

His golden eyes watched her with interest for a moment, his nose quivering with excitement. He was nervous and at the same time excited, like a pup being taken on it's very first lesson. If he could get this wolfess to help him then he'd never have to be in a pack and looked down on because of who he was.

Alrighty! He yipped, skipping up to stride beside her. It was strange and almost comical to see such two different looking wolves striding side by side. One short and stubby but brilliantly coloured female and one gangly, skinny and very plain coloured male. Put together like this really did show the contrasts within both of them and yet also brought out some rare kind of beauty that was not often found in the forests.

So what rrr we 'untin? Some a those....uh...wabbits?He asked. His mother had hunted but she had never caught game that was bigger than a rabbit and he had never seen anything like an elk standing up on its long legs with its antlers waving around. It was going to be a scary experience.
PostPosted: Wed Dec 27, 2006 6:07 pm

(( <3 Thank yeh ))

It took her a minute to figure out what a 'wabbit' was but when she did her lips broke into a slightly wolfish grin. "Aye, well, ah suppose they have got big ears.." she began, snorting laughter. If it was to be a good hunt, though, or at least have a chance of success, he'd need to be prepared. Her face became more serious but also slightly puppyish as she struggled to recall the lessons her mother had imparted to her.

"They're big, elks, right ugly buggers" she thought aloud, her body wobbling in an odd side-to-side gait as she walked. "Aw ah can mind is that they're as precious aboot their pups mother woolf is and they dinnae leave them fur a second. Bit late in the year for it noo, though, so we should be ok. Ye git one as has just left it's mother and yer sorted." she chatted at least somewhat amiably as they walked, feeling somewhat self important in her new role as tutor. It was like the class dunce being told they were the teacher for a day.

"Whit we're gonnae dae is you ur gonna chase one towards me, y'see? and then ahm gonna jump oot and grab it." she looked at the scrawny black and white wolf with a solemn if slightly theatrical seriousness "Ye'v got tae be careful and no send them all runnin' but ah'll show ye how."

Soon, Iphis picked up the tracks of at least a small contingent of the elk herd. "See them? They're elk fitprints. See how they huv bloody great big heavy feet eh?"

He listened to her and as he did his ears began to droop fearfully. These elk didn't sound too friendly and he sure as hell didn't want to go chasing them. What if they chased him for crying out loud!?

He tried to mask his whimper as a cough and lowered his eyes to look upon the tracks.

Uhh...y-yeah nice an' big tha's fer sure. He sniffed and took a step closer to her, glancing around as if one of the creatures might come stampeding at them any minute. Tell meh Miss Bloo, why woul' these big ol' elkies wanna run from a scrawny li'l thing like meh? The only thing he could see happening was something that terrified him.

Wolf chase elk.

Elk gets angry.

Elk chases wolf and stomps on him.

He shivered. I dun like the soun' a this.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 29, 2006 7:18 am

"IPHIS" she said, before replying to anything, not liking one bit being called 'miss bloo'. Sounded like some kinda bird or something. "An' they run away fae ye cos ye got teeth. Ah hope ye huv got teeth, eh?" she grinned, her own maw filled with large, slightly longer-than-average teeth. "See they big stupit elk are feart o' barkin' and wolf teeth. They see them and they run, like rabbits. As long as ye get them aw panicked they'll no come after you." Iphis told him, her nose still trying the ground, testing for the scent of the small herd when they travelled over ground which didn't leave footprints.

"Anyway, nae need to be a big feart rabbit yersel' It look like there's aboot..." she paused, toting up the scents and footprints in her mind. "Five." she paused again. cocked her head and seemed to be counting through again "aye... five. No too many and they're probably spread oot, feedin' at this time o' day. We can pick an' choose which one we want."

The big blue female looked at her scrawny companion. "Yer no feart are yeh, Fluke? Feart ah somethin' that eats slimy stuff oot the water?" She guffawed quietly but her ears still listened carefully. They were close now...

He rolled his eyes at her insistance of her name and said nothing more on the matter. He liked the name Miss Blue. It certainly did describe her looks and demeanour quite well. She certainly one who wasn't to be bossed around and her fur was definately the colour of the sky.

He shrugged loosley and continued to listen to her with slightly drooped ears, only one swivvelled in her direction. Sa alls I gots tah do is bark and show meh teeths? He questioned, looking somewhat sceptical. Where these elk really that stupid or did they just pretend? Would they turn upon a mangy little wolf if they thought they could beat him?

At her declaration there were five Fluke immediately felt his heart flutter with fear. Five of them?! Five! His forelegs trembled slightly and he thought they would buckle. Yet even as she asked whether he was scared he could not reply. Instead his head had whirled around to look around them, were they just beyond the trees? Were they watching him?!

He sidled away from the ominous, skeletal trees, bumping slightly intoIphis as he did so. Biting back a shriek of fear he whipped around, crouching low as he stared up at her.

Finally he answered her question.

Coarse I ain't.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 01, 2007 7:45 am

Iphis stopped suddenly as soon as Fluke spoke, as if his words had halted her. "Shhhhh" she cuationed him as if it wasn't she who had asked him a question. Right ahead of them, through the branches of the winter-bare trees, were the elk. They stood silent, heads looking up but away from the pair as if at some other menace. The wind was blowing across between themselves and the beasts, neither to or away from in a way which meant their detection was only a gust in the wrong direction.

Iphis crouched, looking at Fluke "Git doon!" she hissed, her eyes back to the front once more. The elk stood magisterially, ears flicking back and forward as they pawed at hard winter ground. She knew they didn't much care for solid vegetation so the winter must be hitting them hard. Made for easier prey. Good. As they returned to their feeding from whatever had been disturbing them, she pondered what would be the best side for each wolf, which elk to go for.

Her decision was half made for her when a young doe wandered a little ways off from the tight knit bunch. The wolves hadn't been scented and the young female was being pushed away from the better feeding by more mature adults. Iphis belly crawled over freezing cold ground, glad of her thick winter fur, a little way behind the femme. "Follow" was all she said to Fluke, in a quiet voice.

As she hushed him heis jaws clamped shut with a soft click and he turned to stand beside her, looking almost as if he wished to snuggle against her and hide his face in her fur.

He was a pup in an adult's body that was for sure. Anything scary and that was it, he'd hide his face and it'd be gone, just like magic! Then suddenly the blue wolf was crouching and telling him to get down. In a split second his legs crumpled out from beneath him and he fell with a soft thump onto his belly.

Oof!

Iphis hardly gave him time to gather himself as she spoke her next order, and like an obedient child he did so, creeping close up at her flank and trying his best to stop his legs from trembling.

It was as he was moving softly through the grass that he finally saw them properly. The great beasts with long legs, powerful hooves and rippling muscles. His heart skipped a beat and he almost fainted.

Swallowing back a painful lump of fear he side-stepped until he was directly behind the blue wolf, using her as cover.

Oh bloody 'ell. I'm gunna die...
PostPosted: Thu Jan 04, 2007 11:10 am

Iphis' eyes rolled slightly with impatience as she watched the cowering wreck which was Fluke try to keep up with her orders. She wondered, once again, if the male was up the the challenge of the elk. Ah well, they were here now and might as well try.

The she-wolf pondered her companion's fearful nature, wondering now if it wouldn't be something physical but mental which would stop him. Her though process was somewhat simple, though, as was her idea to prevent trouble.

"Right, listen tae me now, Fluke. Carefully. Ah'm gonnae leave you here and go roon the other side o' that big bugger there, right?" she nodded to the one she had picked out, the doe, who was now standing peacefully browing a twiggy sapling. She looked around, trying to catch Fluke's eyes as she spoke. "Whit your gonnae do is wait tae ah get there, and when y'see me nod at ye you run oot and start barkin' yer wee heid aff, ok?" she paused a moment, letting him digest that fact before adding. "And if yeh don't dae that AH'LL come and squash yer hied never mind them beasties!" she gave him an encouraging if slightly malicious grin before scooting back the way they'd come on her belly. She was hungry and hoped that this would go well.

A little while later she found herself across from Fluke, in a position dangerously close to doe. Her pale fur, mottled as it was, helped camouflage her well to the elk but if the wind blew the wrong way her scent would be detected in a heartbeat. She glanced across the clearing, looking for the black and white male. She couldn't see him but knew she should be visible to him when she nodded, her eyes squeezing shut briefly as she hoped and readied herself. She nodded.

He looked up at her with silent, obediant eyes, his legs trembling slightly. For a moment it looked like he might keel overand probably would have if she hadn't threatened him.

He gave a violent shake of his head and lowered himself fully in the grass, watching with his piercing golden eyes.

The blue female moved into position and his mind only faltered briefly as a bug crawled across one of his forepaws. He flicked it off with his nose and gave a small snort, raising his head just in time to see her nod.

His heart almost failed but fearful of punishment if he stayed put, the gangly wolf crept forwards. His black body was only half covered but with the wind on his side he was able to get reasonably close to the small herd. In fact he was just about to open his mouth to make a racket when they saw him.

Their bleats took him by surprise and instantly he fluffed up, arching his back and giving a warning growl for them to stay back.

For a moment the elk seemed confused, troubled about which way to run and then finally at Fluke's first warning bark they burst into action.

To his surprise - and relief - they hurtled away from him, moving towards the blue female with incredible speed.

Iphis! He called in terror, They're gonna stomp yoo! Mooove! He seemed to have forgotton that the whole point of this was to get them to run in her direction.

'Praise the lord the little weed pulled through!' Was her first thought. Her second was 'Aw bugger'. The Elk were heading right for her place but more than just the female a young male was also careening towards her. Once startled the Elk would be wary and unhuntable all bloody day. Now was her only chance.

The female Elk, having been closer, was out in front, a few paces ahead of the small-antlered male. Iphis knew she wouldn't be able to grab the female directly or the male would careen into her. She had to deflect the female somehow. The only way Iphis knew well was the brute force approach. All of this was decided in the second before she leapt, twisting her body sideways and cannonballing into the doe, rolling, landing half on top of the stricken deer and making a grab.

This was where Iphis' strength lay. She was not smart, nor swift, but she was strong. The doe was strong too, however, and she wasn't able to keep such a large animal under her for long. With a lunging bite to the animals' belly she toppled off and lay panting in the dirt.

Only now did the male's first words really fier through to her conscious mind. As the doe tried to escape still, slipping in her own entrails, Iphis gave the male a withering look. "Thats wit they're bloody supposed tae do. C'mon, help me finish her aff afore she starts bleatin' and letting everyone know there's food tae be had here." As the blue female stood, though, a stabbing pain went through her chest. Shite. She sat back down, heavily, grimacing. "Well, c'mon then!" she growled at Fluke. "Ah've no got tae dae all the work huv ah?"

A moment later, breath back, teeth gritting against the pain, she wobbled back to her feet. She was a direwolf, she was strong. But it really did bloody hurt.

His heart almost hammered right through his chest as he watched those great beasts galloping. Closer...closer...oh my lordy they were gonna hit her!!

He skittered forwards a few steps, stopped and wavered nervously to the side. He wanted to help but he was too afraid to! Instead he stood, swaying on his feet and head canted so that he could watch the events unfold.

The pure strength that dwelled in her form was miraculous and Fluke marvelled at her. He could never have driven into the doe with such force as she had.

Googling her in sheer awe he only noticed when the kill had been made when Iphis began to speak. His ears flew upright on his head and obediently he tore forwards, pouncing on the doe in sheer delight. The expression on his face resembled that of a pup's and was so innocent that the act was made less hellish because of it.

He got the doe around the throat and gave a good hard tug, shaking it viciously until bone snapped and the elk's head fell limp. Then with a bloodied smile he cast a look towards the blue wolfess.

Not sah tuff as they look, eh? He grinned. He pretended he had not noticed her pain. But he had seen it. His eyes missed hardly anything - unless he wanted them to miss it, and he had seen the look of pain on her face. She seemed to be a wolf of pride and he wouldn't diminish her success by bringing it up. Unless he had to of course.

Hopefully the injury wasn't that bad.
