Partners are integral to the workings of the Division. Each Shinigami, once assigned to a Division and entrusted with the capacity to carry out duties will also be assigned a Partner, often one working in the same Division. A Shinigami will learn to form a bond with their partner for trust and care during an assignment is just as important as capability and diligence. Assignments are often dealt with by these duo teams, more extensive duties will be dealt with in a group within the Division.
Often a Partner stays for life. However a Shinigami may appeal to the Adjutant to be assigned another Partner should they find it too difficult to work in their current team. Multiple appeals however will often find the Shinigami requesting for the appeal, being called up to an Unsatisfactory Progress Division Committee.
Soulmates...sometimes the love of your renewed life or the most aggravating soul you'll have to deal with. Soulmates are that one special Shinigami who captures your heart and you have made a decision to be mated to them for all eternity.
It is not unheard of for Shinigami to be soulmated to their Partner, although most find the presence of their soulmate both at home and at work much too enduring.
Hetero and homosexual couplings are accepted in Meifu for love transcends all mortal norms. Your soulmate is also the only one you can 'breed' with to create a new soul (Aura).
