This is actually an element from my sci fi i am constantly working on.
The hawks are a nation of humans, spreading over many planets. One lushly forested planet they found is named Unium prime. Unium Prime was to be used for its mineral resources and lush, nutritious rainforests that could be turned to farms. Fortunately, a race of canine-like pibed creatures known as the elkers were found living there. The elkers were intelligent, but good willed enough to just let the Hawks enslave them. The elkers provided work, and the hawks provided food and care. Eventualy this race of willing slaves was sent out accross the many Hawk possesed planets not just as slaves, but also as pets.
