Totally random discussion.

There are two POV used when writing; namely, first person and third person. Some people prefer one, some the other. Which do you like best when reading? Which perspective do you use most often when you write? Care to tell why? Pros and cons of each that you can think of?

If you want, you can also talk about present tense vs. past tense. Let's keep these forums alive! sweatdrop

Personally, person doesn't bother me. I've written in both, and read in both. In my current project, October's Shade, I'm using 1st person. I think it gives more of a personal feel to the story, rather than just some narrator. You can do some cool things with first person. The character can misunderstand, or not know something, and you can use these elements to your advantage to get different effects. Third person also has advantages. The narrator can show different scenes, get inside several character's heads, etc. I think it's also easier to write flowery passages in third. Your character, for example, may not be very descriptive, so having them in first person would probably miss a lot of detail.

As for present vs. past, I prefer past. I have read some great books in present tense, but I never quite get used to it. Maybe it's just because I've read more in past, or started readings books that are in past first, or because my mind jsut works that way. Especially present tense, first person, bothers me. If the character is telling an action, I think past fits so much better. But, that's just me.

1st vs 3rd:

I'd have to prefer 1st. I like being insidde the character's thoughts and such. 3rd person is okay - I still enjoy it if it's a good book.

Present vs. Past:

Past, definitely. Present can get a bit confusing. o.o

I usually use Past tense third person, but sometimes I use first person, depending on the feel of the story. I enjoy both equally smile I have never read or written anything in present tense, but it doesn't seem like... I would like it much.

Its easier for me to write in third person for longer stories, because I like to dive into all the character's thoughts, not just one. And shifting viewpoints for first person just don't work as well somehow.

However, when it comes to short stories, writing in first person comes more naturally to me. That's typically because, for me, short stories don't have time for a long and detailed plot to where I'd need to go into all the separate character's thoughts.

I'm the same way, Stripe. My short stories are almost all in first person, I've realized.

Harley, I know what you mean about present tense. The idea just doesn't seem like it works well in a story sweatdrop

Mm? It depends on what you're writing.

The project I'm working on, my best friends birthday present, is probably going to be in third person because there's quote a lot of characters to go through. And to add to that, for me, being as unorganized as I had explained it to Sachi before, I like scrambling around between scenes, thoughts, and past or future plans.

As for time, I'd say both is easier for me. x)
Sometimes, I like giving clues as to what's going to happen next and then, later, I like revealing them.
Then, I like going back to the said clues and deciphering them for those who couldn't catch them(:

For normal writing, third person past tense is the way to go. But I usually have journal inputs written in first person and some recordings in first person present tense. I get annoyed with first person, because of the way my characters tend to talk sometimes.

I like first-person. My favorite books and stories are in first-person, like The Catcher in the Rye, quite a few Kurt Vonnegut books, and John Updike's "A&P," though I wouldn't say that's a favorite of mine. First -person allows for more irony and sarcasm, I think.

I think the problem with present tense is that people usually don't describe things as they're happening to them. Most stories are just that - stories. If you go to describe to someone what happened that day, you don't say: "And then we jump up and down like idiots" unless you have a tendancy to use improper grammar when you speak. sweatdrop It just doesn't make sense. If someone's running away from a pack of angry wolves, they should be focusing on running from that pack of wolves, not vividly describing the experience to the reader.

That's basically what I felt put into words, or at least a complete idea that makes sense to other people xp

Third person-past tense is the easiest to read in my opinion, and probably also the easiest to write. Each person and each tense lends itself to a different mood, though. I try to use whatever will be most effective for the story I'm writing, which ends up with some pretty strange pieces. Generally, if it's going to be a longer piece, though, I use third-past or first-present as they're less draining to write. I don't know why, but I find the second person and the future tense to both be completely exhausting to write in.

Perhaps because they're not used as often? Though the present tense is becoming more and more popular, I think. I was actually going to write soemthing in present tense, but decided against it.

The relative nonuse may be a factor, but another major one would probably be that when I write in those tenses, I describe things very differently.
