I had an idea to make a simple website about this, but I figured I'd open it up here first to see how it goes and to get ideas and opinions. I want to make a collection of common misconceptions about various religions and the correct facts.

A number of things must be understood before partaking in this work: Everyone's point of view is different and even those of the same church may have very different takes on certain issues. The "correct" views we are trying to teach are those of the most standard versions of the specific sects. Oh, and reliable sources are good.

If anyone has any ideas on how to better this process, please feel free to speak up about it.

Here is a very brief outline of some under-known truths I've thought of covering so far:

-Christianity: Christ was not born on Christmas

-Satanism: Has nothing to do with devils nor anything else 'evil'

-Paganism: 'Black' magic is actually forbidden

-Islam: Regular Islamic teachings are very different from the 'holy wars' the extremists wage, which we hear about all the time on the television

-Buddhism: Buddha was not fat (furthermore, "Buddha" is more of a title than a name. The man most people know as "Buddha" was Siddhārtha Gautama, though there is an indefinately large number of other Buddhas)

I'll add more as they come to me.

Good plan. Educate the world!
This ties into my "Change the world" thread in the main forum =P Try to make changes that will positively affect society. For every person who reads your website and learns something, you've changed the world for the better.
I'm rooting you on =) Speak up if you need any help.

Christianity: Christ was not born on Christmas

Christmas was a pagan holiday orginially.
On that holiday, men would have sex with each other, beat their wives, drink too much.

The holiday became so unruly, the christian church banned it for ages before adopting it into their religion.

I knew everything up to that point. O_o

Oh, and I'll add that a lot of the traditions of Christmas were also stoled from Pagan holidays, and the date from a Roman celebration I think.

The wife beating bit isn't really true(even though thats generally what happens on any holiday).

Good idea. because a few crazy people don't represent the whole of a religion.

God kills more people in the bible than satan does.

Also I personally think god/god-like figures have a sense of humor that we can't comprehend m'kay.

I think a blog would be more suited, but if you want a website would be ******** a great idea, because I'm tired of seeing threads beating down on other religions for the misconceptions.

Lawl, I see religion more like a history lesson instead of a lifestyle.
I'm atheist and raissed that way. Everytime I heard about god or something when I was small, I thought it was kinda like a fairytale that even the grownups didn't took that serieusly about.

Now that I'm older, I still don't believe in god and still think it's kinda fairytalish, but I respect other people if they believe in it. =)

But I'm still very interested in religions, so keep it up. =)

HIGHLY common one:

Pagans worship the devil.

There is no devil worshipping. Pagans don't actually believe in the Devil, so how is it that they would worship it?

No, for Jesus it doesn't matter whether or not you celebrate on Dec 25, late March or July 4th. He doesn't appreciate you more if you go to church on Easter or Christmas or October the 24th. He wants you THERE once a week preferably, but he doesn't like you more on Christmas.

It seems to me the pagans had it wrong; they should drink too much, beat each other
and then have sex with their wives. No wonder they changed it. lol

How about you add that all of the prominent religions actually teach against violence.
