If you did not know, the planet is heating. But why? Many people insist that greenhouse gases trapped in the atmosphere are causing an increase of temperature while others say that this is a natural trend that has always existed.

I’ve noticed that many people who believe in the latter statement think that the threat of Global Warming is simply a scare tactic created by liberals

I personally believe that global warming is caused by greenhouse gases and other things that humans have caused. The amount of CO2 has never been this high ever (from what I know), nor has the human population. And other countries have adopted some sort of standard, why would they be in on the workings of liberals in one country?

I think it’s a shame that people are skeptical. But I guess that’s what you get when your president is an oil monger *cough*

So, what do you think? Is Global Warming a threat created to drive those in the oil business out of office? Or is it something more?

I decided that whatever the cause is, we should try to cut back on CO2 emissions anyway.

(Feel free to correct me if I’ve made a mistake in there somewhere. I’m out of it today).

A combination of greenhouse gases increase and a natural occurence.

Think of it as Earth's "reset" button. biggrin

Antonymic Synonym

Is it time for it to "reset" though? I'm sure we're pushing it a bit too soon and it should just take a natural course.

Well, in case you haven't noticed, the world is going to hell in general... and how do you know that what's happening now isn't natural? Maybe, in the grand scheme of things, Mother Nature was like, "Ok, in 1,000 years or so, the humans are going to get extremely contemptuous, and destroy themselves. They were around here long enough for me to get my plastic, and now they need to be phased out."

Ok, so the plastic part was taken from George Carlin. I apologize, but couldn't that be the case?

Temperatures of the seas and oceans are rising at a rate that is impossible without human CO2 emissions. As the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increase, the temperature is increasing at a proportional rate. Sure the earth has heated and cooled and the CO2 levels fluctuate, but we're off the chart. Nature has constraints. We broke them.

And yes you're right, the world does seem to be going to hell lately, with tsunamis, devastating hurricanes, and increased amount of tornados, 3,000 year old ice shelves breaking from the Arctic (xD Yes I do see this as going to hell). The United States broke the 300,000,000 mark population wise. I see that as more than a coincidence. The population is at an all time high therefore so are greenhouse gas emissions which in turn cause frequenter worse storms and warming of the seas.

xd Yay Carlin. Anyway, I don't think so. Because we're taking loads of other species down with us. Maybe it is time for us to be phased out, but the actual "phasing out" wont happen for a long time. We're the only species who can live anywhere on Earth thanks to technology. We'll just adapt. Thousands of species will die around us, and we'll simply go on living. We'll build high tech shelters and learn to produce food out of sand or something. It wont be fun, but we'll survive. Which is horrible, because as long as we live, others will die. Other species don't have the advantage of building AC cooled buildings with running water and places to store food. So if Mother Nature thinks it's time for us to be gone, she's going about it all wrong. Maybe she thinks it's time to get rid of lesser organisms. Or maybe she has a thing against ice.

You say that we will adapt, when what we'll really be doing is destroying everything else to make room for our own technology. That's one thing that I've noticed: Humans don't adapt, they just destroy everything else to make room for all their fancy machinery. True animals adapt; humans don't. That's my opinion, anyway.

Mm, yeah maybe adapt wasn't a good choice of word.

I hear that aside from petroleum, they are proposing an "alternative" energy source called "liquid coal." With that fuel in the market, the problem is that much worse than before.

Liquid coal is not an alternative fuel source! It is a major supplement to the problem at hand. scream As if we haven't raped Mother Nature enough already.

Really? I hadn't heard of that one before. Ugh. It makes me mad.

I think that when we find a really good alternative we need to force a change or something or make it really really easy for people to change. You know? Because I think people just aren't scared enough yet.

On the subject of adaptation, we do not adapt ourselves, we adapt the environment in which we live. So now the environment is adapting itself to take care of the pesky human race.
I heard Pat Robertson say that the tsunami in Asia is some sort of retribution by "God". What bull. It's not retribution by some higher, imaginary being. It's the Earth giving use a warning to refrain from increasing the overall human population of the Earth, and therefore, the CO2 levels.
If we don't, we're as good as dead.
So install those CFLs, drive at a max of 60 on the highway, get more efficient appliences, etc.
But MOST important of all, RECYCLE!

And stop cutting down so many damned trees. Call me an ecoterrorist, if you will, but if we don't do something, the oil companies, the tree logging companies, et al...win by destroying the planet.
How that's a win...I don't know.

Well said. You're making me feel like I want to be an activist or something.
