What do you think of politically correct phrases like "Happy Holidays"? They annoy me. It's kind of like saying "happy-whatever-your-holiday-is-I-don't-want-to-offend-you-by-saying-my-holiday," which to me is more offensive. What's wrong with celebrating what you believe? What's wrong with wishing people well in your way, when they'll wish you well in their way? I understand that some people say "Happy Holidays" because they don't celebrate any particular holiday, which is perfectly okay. It's just when people are trying to be over sensitive that bugs me.

Side topic: Christmas trees. What do you think of christmas trees? Should cities/stores/ect stop putting them up, or put up things from other religions in order to be politically correct? ...

This subject annoys me.

I'm a die hard atheist. Yet, I believe in celebrating Christmas, not for religous reasons but for the "good will to all men."

But, if we go to their countries, ("they" being any foreigner to our beliefs) we must respect and abide by their customs and beliefs, as it's just manners natural to a person.

Merry Christmas. mrgreen

I've noticed that a lot of people aren't actually offended by the fact that someone said "Merry Christmas" but rather they are upset because this could be politically incorrect. That makes me really mad. If it isn't hurting you, why call attention to it?

I really can't think today gonk

It doesn't hurt me, no, but It's a pet peeve of mine when people try to be all considerate and what not. I live in America. People should be used to diversity. Why is it now considered politically incorrect to openly celebrate your own traditions and/or beliefs?

I do agree with Antonymic that if we go to a foreign country and the celebrate something different, it would be most appropriate to use the standard greeting.

I live in America too. Yeah I agree with you completely. gonk I thought we were encouraged to be diverse, but sometimes I feel like everyones going to be the same because of all of this "correct" stuff.

I read this comic about 2007 predictions. One was that it will be politically incorrect to say "happy new year" because not all cultures celebrate new years at the same time. At that I thought "But...what about our culture? Why is it 'wrong' to celebrate our own traditions?" I really hope that "Happy new Year" doesn't become another politically incorrect phrase.

So, basically, this is what I've thought up about the whole ordeal. If people are trying to avoid offending another by saying Happy Holidays, what if enough people find it offensive? Will they come up with some new metonym to have the same meaning?

Oy, all this "Political Correctness" confuses the heck out of me.

I do realize I'm veering off-topic here, but I do believe it's /somewhat/ relevant.. A few weeks ago I saw a man wish the woman in a store a Happy Hannukah, and she looked scared. Of all things, scared. It blew my mind.

A few days later I saw a commercial, Santy Claus hopped his little cheery feet out of a giant gift box, and wished everyone Happy Holidays. So is Santa the new symbol of the holidays? As I said before, Political Correctness drives me mad.

Nah, you're not veering off topic at all.

It's somewhat disturbing that despite all the "openess to other cultures", Americans can be so ethnocentric and used to their own culture. confused

I suppose Santa is the new holiday symbol. For "most Americans", or at least most of the Americans out in the world and making and watching the ads, Christmas is the celebrated holiday. The Ad makers can make more money with a Santa than they can with a Menorah. You must realize, though, that Santa is a secular figure, not a Christian thing, so it's not entirely religous. But it's not technically "politically correct" either. Yet people let it slide.

I don't even believe in a lot of the Christian tenements, but I'll still wish them a Merry Christmas. If I know someone is Jewish, I'll tell them "Happy Haunnakah!" If I don't know, then I'll say "Happy Holidays!" And I really think that "Happy New Year" should stay politically correct.

Christmas trees go with Christmas...right? So Stores renaming them is bizarre, i.e "It's a holiday tree" What does that do? If we're going to lump everyone's beliefs into one little box, them why not rename a Menorah (spelling?) a "holiday candle". To me, though I am not Jewish, that would be more insulting! I dislike racsim and bigotry and sexism etc, but uber-political correctness is even worse. I have no problem with people celebrating their own holidays in their own ways! I would not base my decision to shop at a marketplace based on their seasonal decorations. It's all just asinine. whee

The difference in actions is both what makes us beautiful and what makes us hate each other. If everyone would stop SUING EACH OTHER (hint-hint!) we could all just get along.

The boys and girls in the clique, the awful names that they stick,

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, I use both, No, I don't feel its "PI". See, I actually created my own holiday, thus I do publically use "Merry Christmas" but also "Happy Holidays". This would take a long-winded exsplanation on my holiday to fully get through but I shall make my point. Depending on your "Seasonal Celebration" you should use that greeting in most situations. Cause' admit it, there are times that you shouldent use a defined holiday.

Holidays I Celebrate:
Cristmas
Festavus (NOT the one from sienfeld)
This is the one I made, I honsetly never even knew of the show before I made it, and my exsplanation of it will prove such. Festivus Is a Holiday that lasts from Nov. 30th to Dec. 21st. The first day, or the smiting, Is the day when the celebrator tells of the wonders of Festivus. Any that mock her/him will be smited, or cursed. Bad luck is said to follow them untill the end of the festivitys. The Celebrator is know to wear gloves through the entire holiday and carrys a streamer taken from the browzinskis corn maze in October, which was also what decided they would be the clebrator. How it makes this desidion is simple, as the potintshol Clebrators run the maze they must pull off the spesifyed color streamer from the stalks of corn. The smallest wins. The color varies from blue to purple to green, this upcoming year will be purple. The next part of festavus is the candy cane week which actually lasts 8 days. People wear candy canes and things that have candy canes on them. The most populat way to wear them is on your glasses, but if you dont wear glasses you can put them on your ears. Green candy canes bring the best luck, and no one is to eat any of the ones you wear untill the week is over! After Candy Cane Week, Snow war season Begins. The season is a short two weeks of giant snow fights between self assembaled gangs. Its all in great fun. On the third to last day There is massive partying, then on the second to last day there is the sporting events which are games of tag ( ages 4-7 ) Random object Climbing ( ages 8-18 ) wrestling ( ages 10-50 ) and competitive eating for everyone. The Last day contains Massive Partying and competive
danceing.

Now this one my friend made up, It is mainly a celebration of friendship and overall bliss. It lasts Winter break, which is like, Dec 21st-Jan 2nd. Really fun. theres also his cult side to it involving a tree with arrows pointing up on it and a star in the shape of a naked him on it, but thats just freaky.
Busmiss
Another Friend made this one up, It was mainly baced off of a song made up between him and another guy. The bacic way to celebrate this holiday is to joke with friends on a bus. It had to be easy for him...retard.

(Please ingore that I went beyond off track with that, I know, That wasnt nessisary...*Sigh* whatever.)

Political Correctness does exactly the opposite, and plus, not a lot of people use it to its full extent. Considering the former conclusion, that's actually a good thing if you think about it. Some phrases we embrace and others we don't. We use Happy Holidays to be politically correct, but we use Fireman or Policeman, not Fireperson or Policeperson.

I generally wait till someone else wishes me a merry christmas, then turn around and wish them a Happy Hanukah. Ususally they just laugh at themselves and/or apologize, but then I explain that I celebrate both (More gifts, what's not to like?), and usually we're good. Also, If you're in China around the beggining or end of the solar year (the one we use), don't wish them a happy new year, they generally celebrate it around the middle of February, like about Valentine's day. Well, that's how it was last year, the date wavers. Chinese New Year in Jamaica is awsome, or so I hear. Mabye next year I'll fiscally self sufficient enough to go.
