Variety of Roleplay

Roleplay Resources

If you are new to roleplaying in general, here is your thread. Here are tips, rules, advice, and a bunch of other things that are muy importante.

And hey, if you're a writer, some of this can help you too.

2. How To Start Your OWN RP
3. Making a Character
4. Colours You Can Use

Seven Hints To RolePlaying

1. Don't GodMode, and don't PowerPlay. GodModing makes an RP totally unrealistic and PowerPlaying makes your fellow roleplayers very upset. GodModing means to make your character totally invincible, and I mean invincible. Very bad things ensue, and you CAN and WILL get kicked out of an RP. PowerPlaying means to control others characters. See below. (Your character is Jenny)
Jenny grabbed his hand and kissed it. He rewarded her with a small smile and kissed her cheek.

That's powerplaying. But this is not.

Jenny grabbed his hand and kissed it, hoping to be rewarded with a genuine smile.

2. Be descriptive. Being descriptive allows us to really understand exactly what your character is doing.

3. Use correct grammar and spelling - no ChatSpeak. A typo is fine, but blatant laziness is not.

4. Follow the Gaia Terms Of Service. They aren't there because they make the room pretty. This means no cybering, sex, making out, et cetera. The thread creator will decide the limits, but if a mod thinks it's too far, it will be deleted. Sex will not be tolerated. Young children DO use this site...

5. Allow for versatily, if you are a GM - or thread creator. Just because an RP doesn't go the EXACT way you want it DOESN"T mean you can chew everyone out.

6. No Mary Sues. What's a Mary Sue? A perfect character with no flaws, who usually has some tragic past that haunts them. Trust me, you'll know one when you see it.

7. Use OOC. Don't fill page after page with OOC - Out of Character - talk. That's why we have this forum, REMEMBER?

A Roleplay Of My Very Own, Mommy

When you start a roleplay utilising the NEW TOPIC button, there are four crucial things needed in your thread. If you have these, your roleplay should be successful.

  • A plot or setting - something to start with. If you just have 'a bunch of teens living with life in the 1960's', that works. Is it descriptive? No. But does it give us a place to start? Sure. But if I said 'seven teens dealing with protests and wars and the exhiliration of the Space Race in 1969', I'd have a better place to start. Both are usually nice, and in separate posts.
  • Rules. Rules are extremely important because they let us know what you want from us. When you post rules, put down the level of romance/violence (default is PG-13)
  • A profile format, plain or elaborate, is one of the most important things. A profile is a basic listing of character information. More on that next post. But if you have one, then users can send these to you, and then, if accepted, they're part of the RP!
  • And lastly, accepted profiles - which means YOURS! These can, but don't need to, have a member listing in the same post. These are very important, however basic.

Did You Get Me A Profile, Too?

This post will - hopefully - assist you with making a character of your own, and one that is NOT a MarySue, but a real life character we can envision in real life:

  • Your character's name is actually very important. For my example, I'm going to name my character Linnea Bell, in part because I have a good friend named Linnea, and partly because the name is unusual. On this note, you don't want a common name, such as John Smith or Jane Jones, but not a totally whacked out one either, such as Topaz Gold Marino Honor Russell. Middle names are usually optional, but I personally don't like to put them in if I don't have to. It's a personal choice.

    Linnea Bell

  • The age is also important as well. Usually, a character should be over 13 so that they are not bound by limitations such as 'I can't get the peanut butter jar'. Your age needs to be one of independence. Because Linnea is in high school, I have an age limit. I'm going to pick fifteen.

  • Now, for an appearance. Most people link pictures or IMG them, but I find a written description does it justice as well. Avoid beautiful types. Unless there is a MAJOR flaw to offset it, your character shouldn't be Nefertiti. I think Linnea's going to be pretty, but she isn't going to work at it, so she looks unprofessional and sloppy.

Linnea is not the prettiest woman to stride the face of the Earth – she’s no Nefertiti. But, if she actually cared, she might look pretty enough. Dark hair comes to her chin in small waves, and her “bothersome” bangs are held back in a tortoise shell barrette. Adorning her grey-green eyes are glasses of the darkest pewter, giving her a serious appearance. Standing only at five three, Linnea isn’t that intimidating – she only weighs 129 pounds and she avoids confrontation: her eyes are always pointed towards the ground. Always.

  • Now we know what Linnea looks like, but we need to know what fills her body. Here we enter the cavern of personalities. Do not make your character nice, funny, smart, and sensible. Your character needs to have a major flaw, and it cannot be 'I bite my nails'. Think paranoia, insomnia, a temper, chronic lying, et cetera. I think Linnea is going to be envious and blunt, pragmatic and paranoid, a nice balance between good and bad.

Linnea is an envious girl – it’s just part of her nature. She has a biting tongue, her mind filled with anger. Her tongue seems to NOT be connected with her brain; she has tendencies to say things with no meaning. Because of this, or, the reason for this, Linnea will never have – and does not have – any tact. If she thinks you are irrational, illogical, rude, or just plain narcissistic, she’ll tell you so in the bluntest way possible. In addition, she has a tendency to hold grudges. Linnea has what we informally call ‘selective memory disorder’. She remembers that you stole her pen when you were eight, but forgets her homework assignment. And in all honesty, Linnea would be a good student – and a good girl – since she’s smart enough, but she’s lazy. Her paranoia – inherited from Grandma Joliene – seems to take over her mind. Her mind is filled with insignificant things. When you’ve never cared, what happens when you have to?

  • Now, we know about Linnea, but we don't know why she is this way. This is where a history comes in. It's quite alright to have a troubled past, but don't overdo it. It should correlate with the personality, ALWAYS. However, I think I'm going to give Linnea a nice history, but I am going to throw in blunt parents, a paranoid grandmother, and competitve sisters.

Born to James and Avery Bell, Linnea was raised by Joliene Caraway, her paranoid grandmother. She inherited her paranoia from Joliene, and her sisters mercilessly taunted her. Maria, Kailey, and Genevieve were nice, but competitive, and Linnea envied them greatly. Anger filled Linnea like a hawk, and her temper worsened until it became a nightmare. Her parents didn't facilitate temper...controlling, and Linnea is like a bottle you shook but didn't open. Maybe, someone will...but will it be pretty?

  • Now, Linnea Bell is a real person, and we can all see her. This is my character example, and I ask you do not steal this. I will know. I will find you.

    Just kidding.

    Lets see the finished profile.
