We went to see Eragon tonight. I enjoyed it. Sure it was formulaic and rested very heavily on cliches but it used them to establish a lot of plot points in a compressed time. This kept the movie moving right along and didn't give the viewer time to get bored.
I get the distinct impression that it was geared towards younger teens rather than adults which might be another reason the critics hated it. It's a fairy tale and it conveys that beautifully in it's visual effects and the epic scope of the story.
I do believe I'll read the book.

I read the first two of the series and they were enjoyable. In my opinion though, they were a little too reminiscent of Tolkien's works. They have a good story and moral. (Not to mention Paolini was 15 when he started Eragon).
The movie held my attention because I felt it was just different enough from the book to give a familiar something to look forward to, but served almost as a summary for those who did not read the books. Did you find that having not?

I definately got the 'Tolkien-esque' feel of it from the movie. I can see where it could be a summary too, a movie length summary. There were a lot of things that they moved over very very quickly in the movie. Things that they might have taken more time with if maybe they'd have made it two movies instead of one. Breaking it into two might have made each one a bit too long to hold attention though so it's hard to say. I simply enjoyed the movie for what it was. smile I think I'll start the book tonight.

I didn't like the movie all that much personally. I mean, I really liked it and all, the special FX were AWESOME! And Saphira looked wonderful, but I loved the books so much and the movie just didn't represent the book like I was hoping it would. Don't get me wrong, I still loved the movie, I even waited in line forever to get a seating on the first day it came out. But I still enjoyed the books much much more mrgreen

Saphira was amazingly well done in the movie. She was simply beautiful. I loved her as a hatchling too, that was so very well done.

The books were good. I didn't really enjoy the movie as much as the book. Granted, I hardly ever enjoy movies that're based off of books since they seem to always change at least some major plot point.
I didn't agree much with the casting for Eragon, either, except for Murtagh and Brom. Saphira was pretty well-done, though.
*wants a baby dragon, damn it!*
Read the book. It's loads better. Honestly. ^^

It definately wasn't as good as the book, but the book was brilliant, and the film was great! Just some little annoying points - Aria has red hair in the film, but black in the book. And they missed out the bit with the broken gemstone. It wasn't much like the book. The Special effects were fantastic, and Saphira was brilliant, considering that The actor playing Eragon would have to pretend to fly on something that wasn't there!

I really liked the book. I found myself pointing out the differences between the book and the movie, so I couldn't enjoy the movie for what it was. Saphira was so cute. heart I was deeply disturbed that the Shade had blue eyes. @_@
Considering the things they did change, they're going to have some difficulties making a second movie.

Casey Stephens Considering the things they did change, they're going to have some difficulties making a second movie. They could always do what they did with Jurassic Park: Go back & change parts of the first book to lead into the movie sequel they desire.

I don't know if anyone else got the same feel for the movie as I did; but I didn't think it was all that great. I read the book a year or more before the movie came to theatres... it wasn't what I expected, they elft so much out and I was pretty much left disappointed. I mean it was still decent but it could have been way better.
I'm assuming that once the books have much more publicity, they will have a higher budget to spend on the second movie and it will be longer hopefully.
Just my thoughts though.

I refuse to watch the movie just because of the dragons voice that I heard on the preveiws! It drove me nuts! So I must say that I will never watch that movie. It would ruin the books for me I think.

In my opinion, the movie relied a little too much on the special effects that (beautifully) displayed Saphira. I liked the book much more than the movie for the simple fact that there were so many details that can't be put in movies. Also, the ten second transformation from baby to adult was a little of a letdown. Overall the move was good, though.
