Why don't British, or any other European, singer have a noticable accent when they sing? Sure they're noticable in The Streets and Lady Sovereign but they rap not sing. So what's the reason behind this phenomenon?

Not sure... Swedish singers sorta have an accent in their vocals... but other than that... yeah. French, English, German... no accent in my opinion. It's likely because their music schools all follow the same vocal training training techniques where everyone is expected to strive towards the "standard accent". Not sure really but that's my guess.

It's all in vocal training. Vowels are supposed to be pronounced a certain way and diction is heavily emphasized, making it sound different from any British accent.

It depends on the singer, no matter where they are from. Its usually the mark of a good singer when you can't hear the accent. (Oasis comes to mind, Liam really can't sing sweatdrop where as Noel can and unless he's doing it on purpose you tend not to notice his accent) But even with good singers, if the accent is thick enuff it'll show thru on certain words. (Jyrki69 of the 69 Eyes' speaking voice is virtually incomprehensible, but he sings clearly enuff, as do most of the big Finnish acts but theyre accent shows thru on certain words.) And I seriously think we need to change the title of this thread sweatdrop

Dramatica Away II Its usually the mark of a good singer when you can't hear the accent. I think that's a matter of opinion.. I like it when you can hear the accent. Alex from Arctic Monkeys is another example of someone who sings with an accent, he's got a noticable Sheffield accent when he sings, but it definately adds to the band's charm. 3nodding

Arctic Monkeys? It's noticably British. Same with Oasis.
Same can be said about different states in the U.S. I've heard a girl sing who is from Tenessee (sp?), which is a very distinct accent, yet, when she sings, it sounds just like anyone else.

Apart from the Arctic Monkeys, most of the european bands don't have accents, I guess it's just a characteristic of singing sweatdrop

Singers who worry about tone and pitch, not minimalism.
