Today I went to the London boat show and had great fun poking around £8 million power boats. Indeed, there were even those that were roped off with someone standing guard, the "How much have yoyu inherited recently?" types. Now on average boats like these are sold once every twenty four minutes. But what I object to is not the people who buy them (wags indeed) but the impact they have on the environment. I mean, you could kill off a whole coral reef in a day, the fuel costs over a thousand pounds for a day. Why do people need these atrocities destroying wildlife and polluting the seas? We saw boats like this, and larger. Why would anyone need such a thing? Why would you spend eight million on a ghastly thing with white leather sofas and three levels (so the servants get a room too). It's stupid and rediculous. It's damaging our environment, although certainly not our economy. Another thing that shocks me is that so many people can afford to spend several hundred thousand on a yacht. Today has opened my eyes to the middle classes of today. It's certainly a statement on how rich people are becoming and how materialistic we are. I'm not saying that we should give everything to the poor, however I'm just shocked at the amount of money people have to waste and how this effects our environment. So, yeah... Now I have ranted, please discuss! Save a species, burn a boat!

Woah!! where do you live?!!? Ye, the world is ironic. People who literally waste their money, and people who do not have enough money to buy at least a loaf of bread!! I'm glad you have opened our eyes more to what is happening.

I'm EnglishXD
Indeed, it is... 'tis sad.
It's like videogames. I seriously don't get them, they cost so much, all the equipment and everything yet people will waste sooo much money just to be able to shoot some pixilated Nazis, or whatever. It's just stupid.
I'm planning on breaking into the boat show one night and writing COMMUNISM in really big letters and the hammer and sickle symbol everywhere, just for the comic value because we all know that Communism is almost impossible and I wouldn't like it anyway.

I like the way you think. biggrin . It's the common delima of an enviromentally aware/active person: Do you go to jail for vandalism or do you let the self-indulgent pricks get away with it? because there isnt much in the middle. I say burn the riddiculous monsters. And the gigantic houses the people that own them live in. You could build eco-friendly appartments or low-income housing on the lots!

Powerboats are stupid...
however sailboats are really awesome! with only a back-up motor, my grandparents have a 42- footer. Sailing is so much fun, but it takes a small amount of work, and you have to deal with choppiness every so often.
These rich folk just like having a piece of land far away from other people. They don't enjoy the nature or the boating: merely the party...
*sigh*
P.S. Don't you dare make fun of "Castle Wolfenstien" !!!! Computer games are fun! They let you vent (or create more) anger just by shooting... and shooting... and sometimes dying. Its not stupid, Its fun because you get to chat with other people while interacting with them.
...And if you say anything more against video games I'm getting my BFG.

And no, BFG does not stand for "Big Friendly Giant"
Plus... video games allow for development of teamwork and tactics. Its like blitz chess (or bullet chess.... Ok I know I'm the only one who finds that funny) You need to see potential threats, attacks, quickly, or else you lose.

We're going to get a boat at some point too. Indeed, I agree with you about the party bit, very true! Yeah, I take your point about videogames, but my point was the amount of money people spend on something you don't atcually need etc.

I've never been sailing but I agree that powerboats are polluting, harmful to wildlife and ultimatly unnecessary. mad
I have to admit though, with speedboats I can understand the attraction. My thrillseeker tendancies emerge whenever I see someone whiz by on one and I feel jealous - it does look fun! redface On holiday once I went banana boating (you sit astride a giant, slippery inflatable banana and get dragged along behind a speedboat) It was awesome! ...but I feel kinda guilty now... sweatdrop
Maybe I'll stick to absailing, zipwires, white water rafting and hang gliding in future - all fun pursits which don't require an engine!

I like sailing but I tend to be a land-lubber. I like to feel solid dirt beneath my feet and in between my toes (yes I am strange,) or riding four legged, hooved, herbivores is even better biggrin . My mom loves sailing, I used to sail sunfish and other small racing watercraft and my mom used to have a hobie-cat (catamaran). I confess we had a yamaha jet-ski crying it was fuel efficent though, and very much fun. What can I say my mom is a water person.....

We use our friend's 28ft but we're using a 34ft when we go to Greece in the summer^_^ See, sailing is by far superior to power boats. Why would people want otherwise? It seems beyond me...

"Why would people want otherwise"
because those gosh-darned fish keep taking up their powerboats' viable places to go to because of keeping "reefs alive" and not "killing wildlife".
This feeling is often seen in Florida, where celebrities often stoop so low as to stab manatees out of sheer spite
