AugustWolf Aha, our first debate. Provide support on either end. Why is he good/evil? If he is good, how will he redeem himself? Is he really on anybody's side but his own? Did he really kill Dumbledore? Does it even matter what side he is on? If he's good, then nobody can forgive him. If he's on Voldemort's side... well, we all know he loses in the end.

Ok, my particular theory is that he's a good guy. He's meant to be hated and the only way he can truly enable Harry to defeat Voldemort is to appear truly evil.
I believe that when he was overheard arguing about 'not wanting to do it' he was telling Dumbledore that he didn't want to go through with killing him. I think that Dumbledore asked Snape to step in and save Draco from having to kill him, or even that he thought Draco wouldn't go through with it, and it was essential that Dumbledore was killed at the top of the tower.
I think that Snape was the only person Dumbledore could truly trust to carry out such a terrible mission and Snape executed it as planned.
Another supporting part of this theory is when Snape ensured that nobody killed Harry during the escape, he deliberately shouted that he was to be kept alive, and rather than needing to be alive for Voldemort to carry out more hideous rituals I think that he simply needed to be alive to finally defeat Voldemort.
However, I don't think he will step out for the side of Good and Righteousness until the very last chapter, I'm pretty sure we'll get to ensure despising Snape right up until the last minute!
