Name: Cain Peterson; Twilight
Age: 25 years old
Height: 5’5”
Weight: 154 lbs
Sex: male

Skills and Gifts
Power: sciomancer (shadow-walker)
Talents: Since the cover story for the school is that it is a Conservatory (where students study fine and performing arts), he is a skillful singer and can also play the clarinet (he was in a select band during his schooling).
Interests: teaching, children, music
Occupation: Investigator; Professor

Description
Physical Appearance: He has dark hair that falls down to his shoulders and into his eyes somewhat, in a rather shaggy fashion. His eyes are a dark green color and are generally clouded and distant seeming.
Clothing: He prefers dark colors and more relaxed, casual fashion. He tends to wear either a turtleneck shirt under a large, oversized coat or a dress shirt with a loosely tied ribbon and a jacket – usually open.
Personality: He is very serious most of the time and has a quiet nature. Although he rarely loses his temper, he can become quite violent when he does. Unlike some mantics, he prefers to keep a low profile and stay in the background. He has an extreme distaste for the forbidden arts and any who practice them.
Background: When Cain was still very young, his uncle died as the result of a badly cast spell. His parents did their best after that point to instill a respect – but not fear – of the dangers involved in working magic into Cain and his younger sister. He was a bright, cheerful boy, who was very curious about the world and wanted nothing more than to learn everything he could.

Upon reaching the age of twelve, Cain was sent to the Conservatory to learn better control of his gifts. After two years, his sister joined him there. By seven years later, both of them had graduated. One night, workers of the dark arts kidnapped several of the students (most of which had only recently graduated), Cain and his sister among them. Cain watched while his sister was burned to death, after which he was raped repeatedly. One of the few survivors, the experience left Cain with a deep hatred and fear of the forbidden arts.

After graduating, Cain worked briefly as a mantic investigator, striving to apprehend users of the forbidden arts and stop their activities. Frustrated by the seemingly endless and useless missions, he turned to teaching at the Conservatory. For the past three years, he has been the professor for Defense Against Forbidden Arts, trying to keep mantics from being drawn to them in the first place.

Tortures: Well, his uncle was killed by a badly cast spell, but that didn't scar him too badly. However, the death of his sister and the situation that surrounded it traumatized him somewhat - at least enough to change his personality a bit (he was already quiet and studious, but he became withdrawn). He relies very heavily on support from his boyfriend, Gabriel. More recently, he's been being harassed by people who want him to use his gifts for them. Since they're from the government, there isn't much he can do against them.

Well, a good sign is that it surprised me that he had a boyfriend -- means you aren't revolving the entire character around his sexuality, which so, so many people do.

His past and the effects it had on him are both things I've seen an awful lot of, but all in all I like him as a character.

Thanks for the comments, I always appreciate them. I am considering taking out the part with his uncle's untimely death, since it doesn't seem to have come up in any of the stories I've written. His sister's death, though... that's not something I can change now, as it's somewhat pivotal in the first story I wrote with this character.

I'm also glad that he doesn't seem to be built around his sexual orientation. Part of me was actually worried that he was. I posted a part of his story in the Writer's Forum and the only person who critiqued it referred to Cain and Gabe as "the gay guys"... it got annoying. I appreciated her critiques, but they are so much more than just two gay guys. (I also post part in the story section here, but I'm going to edit it so that it starts at the story's actual beginning.)
