So yeah. My show was last Tuesday. Went up to Atlanta with a couple of friends. 4 hour drive followed by 4 hours of waiting in line. I would have liked to get there earlier, but it was ******** freezing for one thing, and apparently the people in the front of line got there at 12. Which, if we had lived in Atlanta, would have been 30 minutes after we got there (We left at around 11:30). But hats off to them, they even brought used sheets so they could keep warm for the 8 hour wait. So apparently for every 1 cool Incubus fan, there are atleast 10 who are dicks. Luckily, we got to hang out with two pretty cool fans while we were in line, one sporting a homemade shirt that said "Mike Ensinger Is My Idol." But most people seemed bitchy about their possition in line, and one girl even bitched to me that we use to be behind them and how did we get ahead of them. They were very offended. Eventually we got in. This is the part where the spoilers begin, so if you don't want me to reveil secrets of the concert, then don't read this.
So yeah, we got about 6 or 7 rows away from the stage, and this was a pretty small venue. About as big as a movie theatre room if not smaller. Had a couple levels of balconies. So Albert Hammond Jr. was pretty cool, if not relatively bland and unenspiring. Their lead guitarist was pretty cool, and they were good, if not very different. My friend met Hammond after the show, who was apparently very drunk.
The concert was pretty laid back until the lights darkened for Incubus, at which time everyone basically got twice as close to the stage as they were before, so it was rather cramped. Some bitchy fat girls were smoking pot right in front of me. Every ******** show, someone has to be smoking pot right in front of me. It smells terrible. But it was a no-smoking venue, so for once, we left not smelling like cigarettes, which was nice. The set was okay, but they only played about 2 of the songs that I really wanted to hear. Pardon me was part of the accoustic set, and was pretty cool, and they did Sick Sad Little World in all it's extended solo glory, which was the song that I wanted to hear the most, and the highlight was definately when me and my friends sang along to the guitar solo.
Which brings me to the topic of "singing along." Oh my god. I litterally had to strain to hear Bradon over the audience. Now singing along to some parts is one thing, but it was every ******** lyric of every ******** song. The only reprieve was on parts of the Science accoustic set, of which many were probably unfamiliar with the words, and Hello, which only a few people recognized. I admit I sang along with a couple of songs, but I wasn't trying to outscream for Bradon's attention like it seemed that these people were. Overall, the impression that I got was that most of the people there were not there for the music. They were there to see someone famous. And it pissed me off majorly. Especially with the ammount of hatred I now harbor for the whole celebrety culture. I was there for the music. Incubus is way better live than they are on their studio albums, and this was true of this concert as well, during the parts that I could hear. I mean, the show as a whole was much quieter than normal concerts, but still... On the interesting side, when the crowd jumped, you didn't have to jump. You generally rose and fell with them. It was a neat experiance. And every couple of mintutes the whole crowd would fall over and you would go almost completely horizontal and then shift back up (this is my first general admission for a high profile band, so I assume this sort of stuff happens at big shows; My Chemical Romance fans are apparently a bunch of pussies, just like the band).
Anyway, the fans generally sucked. The setlist was not what I hoped. No Idiot Box, no Vitamin, no Piano/Bass Drive, no Here In My Room, no Make Yourself, no Pantomime, they didn't even play The Warmth! The set was really heavy on their new stuff, which I guess is to be expected, and they did a cool job of it and even played Rogues as part of their encoure which was awesome. The accoustic part was cool as well. Sick Sad Little World was amazing. Megalomaniacs was really cool, as was Pistola with the cool light gloves.
But the real kicker was Ben ******** Kenney. This dude was bass god. He went from being just an amazing bass player to being my 4th favorite. We were right in front of him (he took a couple of pictures, wherever those get posted, I'm in them), and basically due to the quietness of the show and the loudness of the crowd, he was the only one I could hear well the whole time. And what I heard was the truth. Not only were his basslines amazing, but he would put flurishes and even solos in the middle of songs and it was just nuts like a mug for lack of a better expression. And he was having such a good time and smiling so big and he has such a nice smile. It was really cool. He just seems like an awesome dude. And he had this solo that was amazing on one song and Brandon went over with the gloves and did his lightshow on Kenney's bass. And then at one point, they used this spotlight that made the machines and the pickups on his bass shoot into the crowd. Unfortunately, I couldn't hear Mike a lot of the time, Kilmore was sort of tought to see, and Jose's golden drumkit was amazing. Brandon had a cool guitar for the encore which had like a drawing of some kind on the back.
So all in all, a rather lifechanging experiance. For one, I don't really want to be a rock star anymore. And its made me look at music and concerts in a very different way. I guess a lot of shows aren't about the music, they are about the fame surrounding the group. Another thing pointing to the fact that "People are terrible." I mean, it wasn't a bad show, just disappointing in a lot of repects. It was fun, it was enjoyable, it was entertaining. But music isn't about intertainment for me. It's about experession and art and beauty. And while that was there, it, much like Brandon's vocals, was hard to pick out from the crowd. I don't think I can look at concerts the same way anymore. They sort of lost the mystery they once had for me. I've changed as a person for the experiance.

Brandons Light Gloves are amazing.
I cant believe Brandon kept his shirt on at your show, he usually takes it off doesnt heIn SF he took his shirt off for the whole show and then put on this dress a girl had thrown on stage. Muy Sexy.
ok so my thoughts:You met some bitchy fans. Hardcore fans are usually really open and dont complain about the line and such. That was just unlucky. But maybe you were judging harshly because you love Incubus so much.In the line I was in I ended up meeting this kid I went to school with a few years ago. He had been following the tour starting in Oregon and working south. It was pretty amazing seeing him again. You got there early. I was 2 hours early and got 3rd row...but Im so ******** short it didnt matter =( Im SO jealous of your friend!!!!! I love Albert...I wish I could have met him!!!!!!!
So Ben....I was blown away by him. He was AMAZING and incredibly inspiring. His bass playing was one of the highlights. He has amazing energy and just radiates good vibes. I was in front of Brandon so I couldnt see him a lot, but when I did it was just like "OMFG youre a genius"
BTW Ive finally discovered DJ Shadow and Im LOVING him

DJ Shadow is at Coachella too.
The UNKLE album (aka Psyence Fiction; it's more of a collab with vocalists and such) is really good, as is Premptive Strike. Endtroducing is the most cohesive album and Private Press has a wide variety of song types with some really really stand out stuff. Basically you can't go wrong, unless you get his new one, The Outsider, which might not appeal to everyone. Personally I think it is a work of genious, but can't fully appriciate some of the hip-hop tracks.
RJD2 is also good, if you like the Shadow. And if you like RJ, then Soul Position is totally the happiest rap group ever, minus a couple really desturbing tracks.
I don't like people.

aHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHH they were AMAZING last night, positively epic. The Greek Theater (Berkeley CA) has great acoustics, I was blown away by the sound quality. It was just as good, maybe better, than the show at the Warfield, which is a much smaller venue.
The opening venue was rediculously conventional...but Mike came out to play a song with them.
