If you watch T.V. then you know how annoying these can be. I truly wouldn't see the point of having so many, for instance, how come the stations don't make themselves free in cost, if all the T.V. stations would find a way to come together and make their station free, then there wouldn't have to be anymore. I'll try to make a map of my understanding
People------>T.V. Station ------>pays cable/satilite stations .......... |........... | .......... |____>Comercial .................... | .................... Brand If T.V. stations were to stop paying cable/satilite stations then they wouldn't have to play comercials (For me, T.V. stations would be something like CNN and by cable station I mean like Comcast)

Septomor If you watch T.V. then you know how annoying these can be. Everyone wants to make money... The T.V. stations have costs, and, frankly, they are in relatively short supply (we have, total, what? 1000? 5000 important stations worldwide?) They are a medium that so many people partake in, that advertisers will pay our their teeth to get a 30 second block... Remember how much super bowl commercials cost? all the hype surrounding that? All for emerald nuts? Would you, in all honesty, turn down a mutli-million dollar deal that fills in that extra time between 1/2 hour segments or "FRIENDS"? The shows are actually MADE to be less than 1/2 hour long so that commercials have time nowadays... The "point" is that TV stations don't care about us, they care about WHO is on them, and how much money they make through that.

That and our economy would suffer with out them. Commercails support the T.v staions that pay taxes and play into the economy, they also support business. If you buy a slot during primetime or even the superbowl the publicity will double or triple the amount of business you get and the profit you make. Having a commercial imply's that you have the money to but a comercial and therefor cater to a higher class of clientel. This is not considering all of the clever PR tricks that they can brodcast to mass audiences. Everyone wants to make a buck, thats true, but we also sort of need them to support the unfortunate evolvements in the American economy, making them annoying but sickly beneficiary.

.... Although I have heard of studies that say basically Americans (and I assume most advanced countries) are becoming deaf or building up an immunity to these advertisements just because of their sheer numbers and trying to take in all that information would be impossible.
It makes sense in a way, that it becomes dulled over time. Children are greatly affected by commercials for toys, shows, etc.
Even today, there is still that little blinking light in my mind saying "mythbusters at 9, mythbusters at 9"

That's why we have the BBC!! Yeah, so we have to pay TV licenses but it means that we get BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4 that have no adverts.
But, yeah, Lettuce you said pretty much all of it! I do hate ads though, they're so stereotyping and watching ads on childrens channels are enough to make me a Communist (a fate worst then death). It's truely ghastly...

the tv stations must pay taxes for for (in US at least ) FCC, revenue taxes, land tax (where the studio, etc, exists, or the business center), peoples wages.
A lot of stations have their own News programs. These have weather tracking, for example. As well as the cost of equipment/ upkeep, you may or may not have to pay a "lease" on that equipment's technology. (I remember hearing something about this, but could be horribly, horribly wrong)
There aren't necessarily a lot of taxes, but a huge amount of expenditures

They might not be as effective as before but they still work. I do that too. The shows thing doesnt just affect children (toys definately though,) my dad has a little blinking light that goes Keith Olberman at 11 and mine says Numbers at 10, Numbers at 10 (I know its crap, but it's interesting crap)

I know! They always say 60 months because it sounds a lot less than the 5 years it really is! Its like things costing 99p instead of £1. It seems to fool some people though.

That's an oxymoron, it's rediculous!
