Essays: Anything that is written (third person optional) that explains or teaches about another topic.
Memoir: Anything that actually happened. It can be written in any form other than poetry (ie, journal, letter, some kind of rambling). An actual memoir is in first person, but this is also where you can post things that actually happened, but that you write in third person.
